organized counties, we may with good
reason expect thi to be below the actual

we have no diubt that we shall be foucd
with over 350.0J0, inhabitants, giving us

the present apportionment, to three
members of Congress.
The full quota for three members
would be 411,000. as 137.000 is the ratio
to a member. But the new apportion
ment law gives to a fraction over one
half the ratio an additional member in
each State. For two members the pro--tfvtiniUattaycJax&.aav.w
between 322,500 and 41 1.000. '
It is of cour e, one thing to have the
populatiuii, and another thing to get the
additional representation. We have
heretofore expressed our doubt as to the
prospect The jealousy of the East of
the growing power of the West iu Con

succeeding year, and the manner in
which the apportionment was manipula
ted three years ago, by which home of
the New England States were arbitrarily
given representation, additional to that
they were untitled to by the cenus re
turns, while no provision whatever was

only increase this hostility, and result in

Yet in tho face of these difficulties,
Nebraka will be recreant to her dutv
and unworthy of a position as a sovereign
State, if he does not make a lively fight
in behalf of her rights. The greater th
injustice intended the more emphatic
should be our outcry, and the more de
termined the effort of our Representa
tives. From the present Congre.n, it
will perhaps be uieless to expect action,
although there will be time to make our
cae out before the session closes. Rut
it will not take i very terious amount of
opposition at this lalu day to postpone
the matter, even if a work ins maioruv
can be had in our favor. Never hele.-s
the sooner the issue is brought up the
better, and we strongly recommend that
as soon as the Secret-ry of State has the
returns in his office, an official abstract
of the Mine be forwarded to our Con
greional delegates, for th-m to use as
a basis for a bill giving Nebraska two
additional Representatives in Congress.
The coming legislature, in case this
bill was by the strenuous exertions of
our Senator and Coiigtosmen, pnssed,
can district the State, leaving our first
delegates to be elected at large, or what
would be better a special session might
be called prior to the October election,
and the districts formed and the cleetioh
had by districts next fail.
But it, as is likely, no success shall be
attained during the present session of
Congress, we are in favor of the Dlao of
electing two ocntiBgcst Coagiessaen
next fall. snd making the fight for their
admissiou into the next Congress, upon
the showing of the enumeration, this
spring.
if Congress refuses, of course their is
no appeal, but the effort should be re
newed after the more elaborate state
census that our constitution direct to be
taken next year.

crease of about 220,000 inhabitants since
1870. Recognising the fact that Ic-s
thau one-balf of the increase of the cur
rent year has yet been made, inspection
will show that we have added forty per
cent annually to our population. This

and John think- so too. The trouble is
they are conservative people, while she
is a radical. I intend to write, some
day. a regular ranservativc article, which
willl pleae Mrs. J., ao John. But, at
present, I want to tell your readers of
an incident that occurred here one day
la-t week, which pleased one man so
much that he hardly knew all dy
whether he stood on his head or his
feet. He is poor. like the rest of us,
and by some misfortune he has Ion hi
team, and had no visible means of get
ting in hi- crop. But that morning, to
his surpri-e, his neighbors came one
after another, and commenced to plow,

coruplanter and planted it . and. also,
twe others with the rcqui-ite machinery
and put him down a well. The women
came with laden, baskets and took pos
session of the house, and a bountifu

stand the mattet, as his wife is. a member

committees, they had ascertained that
she was iu need of assistance.

One of the nio-a remarkable old ladijs of
our time is Miss Lucy Laiigdon NowjII,
who was born in Alfred, Me., July 4,
1776, on the diy and very near the hour
of the signing of the Declaration of In
dependence. When eight years of age
she united with the Alfred Shakers, and
ha since livid with them. When eigh
ty fonr years of age she wove thirty-four
yards of cloth, and at ninety-six knit ten
pairs of mittens. She has never been
in a railroad car, and is in excellent
health. If she lives until 1876 a Pull
man palace car will be carried direct to
the Quaker City, where her presence
will be one of the features of the itrand

the repairing of the bridge across the
Republican river, .-south of Red Cloud,
in the Comity of Webster.
Said repairs to consist iu the erecting
of one or more spans in the center of
saiu bridge. Length of bteak in said
budge being about two hundred and

ied by plans and specifications for repair
nur by in-erting one or more spans in
