Laird, ft promising lawyer from Juniata.
He is also a Col. and member of the
Governor's staff. Also Mr. W. B. Thorn,
Treasurer of Adams Co., paid his re
spects while visiting our town.
A rival landlord made his appear
ance at the Valley House on Saturday
last He appears to give good satisfao
tion, and mak.'S little change in pro
gramme of business. Joe thinks as he
weighs but ten pounds, he will give him
his board and clothes for his company.

firm of the new lawyers in this new town,
viz. Laird & Estelie.
On Saturday last, as Dr. Williams
was crossing the river, his team broke
through the toe, precipitating him into
the water. After 6ome difficulty he suc
ceeded in getting out, but left his horse
for dead. The Indians Went to the res
cue, saved the horse and returned him
to the Dr., after he had wall paid them
for their labor.
The Otoes quietly sallied out of town
on Sunday morning last It was a curi
ous sight to see the paraphanalia of each
poney and its load, the squaws and
pappooses, the bucks and dogs, no two
alike, as they made their way in true In
dian file, toward their homes. Heap big

A lawsuit was held at the Court
House on Monday last. It was an action
brought by F. P. Reed against L. F.
Munsell for trespass of cattle is Reed's
cornfield last summer. Three arbitrators
were elected to decide the question; W.
N. Richardson, E. B. Smith, and Z. P.
Earl and the case was argued before
them. Our lawyers argued the case with
great deal of skill and very discreetly.
At the conclusion tho referees gave their
decision granting Reed fifteen bushels of
corn, and Munsell to pay the coat of
court, which was fifteen dollars.

hold Magazine is a capital one. It
opens with an interesting story entitled,
"The Guiding Hand," by Mrs. H. G.
Rowe; following this Joseph Snider
gives his "Experiences in the City," no
an article which for its simple truth the
youth of the land should read to their
profit ; " My Prayer " is not n religions
sketch, as one would suppose from the
title, but is n most touching story told in
the sincere manner and rough speech of
a railroad hand. "The Weekly Diaboli
cal," b Kark Kse, aims a sharp and
timely blow at sensational literature.
"The Kaiser Frederick" is one of Mary
Hartwell's entertaining stories. In the
installment of "Misery Jippeau," H. V.
Osborne raps the knuckets of the fash
ionable clergyman, ana buries Anta

articles of merit, aad some choice poetry.
The Magazine contains six illustration,
including nine design for a Country
