A repoktkd scandal in Pittsburg involves A. W. Campbell, the man who made a spectacle of himself in the Chicago Convention. It is be ing hushed up. Tnt Schuyler Sun is gathering up a cattle list in their county. It has got 7,C9S head of cattle, $,387 hogs, 7,90G heep, 377 horses and not through by any means. Sim e the breaking-out of our lata University troubles a dangerous form of cacoethes scribendi has made its ap pearance among the students, to judge from a glance at our State exchanges. The mud and snow in St. Louis is said to be terrific. The street hood lums are piling it up in imitation of graves and sticking up boards with quaint and sometimes unpro nounceable subscriptions thereon. Haverhill, Massachusetts, was visited by an awful fire on the I7th, which burned over six acres in the heart of the city, destroyed two mil lions of property and threw two thousand persons out of employment. Mrs. Scoville writes Mrs Garfield to have her forgive, and help get her miserable brother pardoned. Mrs. Garfield in terms says she has no mal ice against the murderer of her hus band, and nothing to forgive, but the law must take its course. lir the Greenwood Eagle, we see that Mrs. John Fitzgerald has been visiting there lately. Also that friend Elliot has a sort of Newspaper melee on Land: that is somebody is mad we judge and has rushed at the Eagle to scream for them. If the Journal man will make him self understood in his articles about government offices, and steals and printers, etc., we will try and answer. .The article in Saturday's Journal was too blind for us. AVe can neither tell whom he accuses, whom he is driving at, nor what is wanted to be explained Sing it out, old man, if you've got any "mare's nest." The Scientific American, Messrs. Munn fc C., which was burnt out in the recent fire in New York, has found new quarters and again comes forth at 2GI Broadway, corner of Warren street, a most eligible situa tion, nearly opposite the entrance to the great Suspension Bridge over the east river. It Beems to be a fact that the Ne braska "delegation" and tha President, or the President and the Neb. dele gation in Congress, have agreed to di vide up the Presidential appointments in this state, Valentine recommend ing them north of the Platte and the Senators those south of the same slip pery stream. Naught else would break the dead-lock. Glad it's settled some how. Say, you fellows running things, who's going to be Post Master here? ' What land office is vacant next? Who's boss, VanWyck or Saun Jers? How's the Surveyor General's coming on? Tell us something, can't you. The world is dying t know these things. Are our City improvement matUrs to be dropped. We hear nothing about any action on the same. The Beaver Ci.y Independent thinks that Senator Saunders .won't have much of a chance to be re-elpcted be cause no U. S. Senator has succeeded himself in Nebraska yet. Maybe a turn now, who knows? ; The apportionment bill as passed in the house, seems to leave it op tiohal for states to district, or not, in cases where their Legislatures do not meet regularly this winter. That is. they can call a special session or elect at large. Judge Tourgee is about to illus trate a "Fool's Frrand" in takinc the editorship of a new illustrated paper to De puousliea in I'lulaaelpma. Alex .News. Alas! Victou Vifquain bids adieu to his readers- in the Lincoln Demo crat this week and retires Cincinnatus like to his plow and farm in Saline Co The firm hereafter will be Watkins & Barnhart. Vifquain has certainly been a fearless and rather able expo nent of what he considered Democracy, Jno. A. Brodiiead, in th U. S. Quartermaster's department, of tha Pacific Coast, lately raised a check from $84.50 to $84,600.50, was detect ed and is now under arrest. He con fessed to having raised a $2,000 check before. He belongs to the Pennsyl van in Btodheads, one "of the family of which died not long since and was buried near Milford, Penn. We learn from Mr. Murfin, who arrived from Nebraska City last night that five Missouri Pacific rail read en gineers arrived in that city Monday and started out yesterday surveying a line from Nebraska City to Avoca Cass county, and from that point the line would be run to this citv. This is the information the engineers convey ed to Mr. Murhn. Lincoln Journal. If Murfin wasn't such an interna L awver we might believe this. If the Woman's Suffrage Conven tion at Lincoln was meagrely attend ed and did't ''leave a ripple on the surface of events." as the Jeurnai now says, in answer to a direct qnes tion from two leading papers in the state, then the Journal should not "have devoted a large portion of its local page to this supposed important meeting, aid thereby deceived its country exchanges and readers as to the importance of the move entirely. Tuc Anti Polygamy- bill that pass ed the Senate has one clause that worries Congressmen a little. - It provides that any person living with more than one woman as a wife in any part of the country, that the U S. has exclusive jurisdiction over, shall be fined three hundred dollars and may be imprisoned. That catches 'em, the District of Columbia is under the exclusive jur isdiction of the U. S. No "feller said much about this section of the bill in debate, but it may defeat it yet. The Fillmore lteview hoists the name of O. Teff t of Cass for governor It will now be proper for the Saline county Standard to hoist the name of James W. Dawes. The Thayer county papers bet on Secretary Alexander and the Nemaha papers on Church Howe, If there are any more monopoly candi dates laying around loose, bring them out, gentlemen bring them outl We still bet on Dawes carrying off the prize; but as we have several times stated already he will be defeated by ten thousand majority. Something strange about this matter governorship in republican conventions, anyway; it seems as if that portion jof Nebraska laying north of the Platte was alto gether disqualified for the position. e nave had Butler, 1- urnas, Garber and .Nance, all South Platte men, so far. OF THE" INDEPENDENT. Spcakiug of the CbAngcs Garfield' Death has Made, she nays: Death, the great Quieter, as well as the great Leveler, through the changes he wrought, commanded silence, at last, from even the insolent, ungoveru ed Tongue, as the baton of power pass ed from one hand to another. Of the magnificent houses begun last Spring haw few are wanted to day for just the purposes for which they were designed? The house of Senator Don Cameron, one of the most splendid in the city, toward which the whole of the gay world looked for coming mag nificent entertainment, is to-day al most unused, while its young and most lwvely mistress lies sick in a physician's house in New York. The sumptuous abode, just completed of ex-secretary Blaine will not be needed for official entertainment, at least, for the next four years; while the costly home, just finished, of ex-secretary Wmdom he would hardly have begun to meet the quieter demands of a senator's social life. The boyish and buoyant Garfield, whose ingenuous heart grew Jubilant at sight of so many of Fortune's uuimag ined gifts, who one year ago seemed risen to the very acme of human pros perity, to night, in the marble house he did not picture, waits the final change iu the- tranquillity of death. His Wife, to whom the White House brought nothing but pain, sits amid fatherless children in the quiet home in Cleveland. In the White House reigns a wifeless man, who will calm ly count every month of decorous mourning for his predecessor before he allows any gay sprite of the world or tine yranje dame de societe to move him to lavish executive entertainment in the great rooms that wear still, though invisible, the heavy, shades of tragedy and sorrow. Of the Eulogies on Carpenter she writes: The most pathetic tribute of all came from the great senator from his native state Senator Edmunds. He said: "In an acquaintance of more thaw thirty years and an intimacy of nearly fifteen years we never had an unfriendly feeling or dispute, and I never received from him a word hurt ful or unkind. His few human faults I forget, as I would wish my own to be forgotten. I mourn him us my brother and he was my brother. He was the son of our common another, Vermont, who cheerfully yielded him, as she has so many of her sons, to build up states like herself along the borders of the Great Lakes and all the valleys of the upper waters of the Mississippi. She walks into Blaine thusly: James G. Blaine is once more swim ming in his native ether, close to the edges of a row. All who know him knew that it was merely a matter of lime his attainment of a grievance. The first stake to be driven in his com ing campaign was an open issue with the President and his new administra tion. Before he left the State Depart ment he knew one of two em's must be gained. Either he must entail upon the Arthur administration "a policy" that would redound to the glory of Blaine through the comhig presidential struggle, or he must re assume the role of "the plumed knight" and fight the Administration. "I thought I had things fixed so they would stay," he declared, before he vacated the State Department; but when he found that, upon further in vestigation, the President proceeded to "unfix" them decidedly from the Blaine standard of arrogance and am bition, with his high personal stakes in peril, what remained for the ex premier to do but to call in his friends for consultation and to burst into the newspapers? Of the Guiteau trial she makes this summary and defense of Judge Cox: The charge of Judge Cox was a sur- i prise to all, save the few who knew the real measure of the man. It w is a surprise t the prisoner, who, after the long weeks of leniency, forgiveness and indulgence, which he had abused. under this judge s rulings, fully expect ed a charge that would move the jury toward his favor. It was a surprise to the siectators, who, witnessing his indulgence, had almost invariably con eluded that "Judge Cox favored Gui teau"; but it was not a surprise to any one who knew Judge Cox. And, as so much misunderstanding. mis-judgment, and harsh judgment have :nevitably spread through the land concerning this gentleman, I will say a few words for him, iu simple justice. Into every just judgment or an individual must entei some discrim inating knowledge of his antecedents, his education, his temperament, his na ture. Such elements as enter into the "makeup" of Judge Cox are rarely seen in any man, .North or boutn, wno has achieved success or eminence. Said one who xnows him wen; "i nave never seen any man really eminent who had so little self -consciousness." Judge Cox is the most unpretentious man l ever knew. Judge Cox is a slight, delicate look ing man, whose strong reatures ana ine head indicate a mentality more potent than any mere physical force could express. II is somewhat bald. haa mild blue eyes, a lionian nose, and an expression entireiv benevolent. Said a friend : "I cannot see how a man can amount to so much and assert him self so little." This was the quality that brought down upon him so many anathemas during the Guiteau trial. His is not the material energy or engi nery that vocirerates, gesticulates. commands. Guiteau, who is an acute and nervous brute, cared no more for Judge Cox's gentle cry of "Silence!" than he did for the fly he brushed from nis nose. But the moment came when he cared. When Judge Cox's wise mind, clear sight, and just statement were set upon the facts of his awful crime the criminal knew :ie had reached at last his moment of doom, and he quaked as utterly as if the vociferous insolence and insults with which he had filled every hour of his disgraceful presence in court had never been. The real mental and spiritual strain of the trial on Judge Cox is plainly seen stamped on his worn and weary face. "My husband looks twenty years older than he tlid when the trial be gan," said Mrs. Cex, last week. Manv persons will take no medi cine until prostrated on a bed of sick ness. This is folly. Nature always calls for assistance when needed to throw off impurities. With our habits of life, it is necessary to render this help. When Mr. Keid "talks about character" the Com mercial calls the situation "ludicrous." As thus: A harlot my play the virtuous woman for u time, but Reid is not able to put on even the thin disguise of such a wanton. There are many queer etories floating about Washington and New York iu which he appeared the hero, but his successful filling of the role of stool pigeons is enough. Con template, therefore, a decoy, a procur ess, and a pander talking about char acter! .It is enough to set the whole country in a roar. , And here is what the editor of the Tribune says cf Hugh Hastings: No one here,.with any knowledge of newspapers, thinks of bothering him self about what the Commercial says. It is a sheet of limited circulation, as absolutely without influence as its ed itor is without character. When he conducted the Albany Switch he had a certain smartness which caused him to be read, and occasionly chastised but that was a long time ago. He is now merely a ridiculous old blather skite, with some venom still, but with no fangs to lodge It. O. Republican.. ' If such big newspapers will quarrel thusly. the battles of the smaller fry may be overlooked somewhat. We rather think Reid deserves all they give him. There is much excitement at Kings ton College, 'and a strious rebellion tiu the part of the faculty has occurred Last Saturday Mr. B madeaspetch at a political meeting in the village, and that faction of the local Republi cans whd favor his nomination as the next Republican Presidential candi date met him n his arrival at the sta tion aud escorted him to the Town hall. As the procession passed the rts idence of President Begosh, who for sever.ty-fl ve years has been a warm supporter of Mr. B . the aged Pres ident hastily illuminated his house. As soon as this fcet came to the ears of thd students who are unanimously in favor of the nomination of the distin guished yoang civil service reformer, C A. A , .lun.; they held a meeting and sentenced the President tosuspen sion for the remainder of the collegiate year. I he prolessors and tutors, with out exception, espoused the cause o President Begosh, and protesting against the decision of the students announced that they would not attend a single recitation unless the sentence of suspension should be annulled. The faculty pa raded the village last night with band of music, and it is rumored that several tutors broke into the mathe matical recitation room aud destroyed the blackboard, together with neatly a pound of chalk. A college rebellion is of course, a very unfortunate matter, but in this ease it is obvious that if any sort of discipline is to be maintain ed by the students, they must not yield to attempts at coercion on the part of the faculty. One Woman's Say. In the HtKALD of February 16th correspondents are invited to state their views in regard to Woman's Suffrage. What we wish to talk about this time is not Woman's right and abili itv to vote, but does she want to; wo men can urn farms, but we don't rant to; we can build fires these cold mornings, but we are decidedly opposed to such a proceeding; we think we might help to mauags the National affairs, still we prefer that things go on 1n the good old way; we arc willing that meu should have both h ni'ici and , rcsponsonsi bilities; we know that there is plen- of "father Adam in the men of to day, and it we do vote and matters get tangled up, then eich man will put his hands iu his pockets, look :ft kis better half and say she did it." No we do not need the ballot-box, we will work in our own way and ac complish more for the cause of tem perance, even, than in any other way. We hope the sisters who want to vote will stand up and tell us why; we may be wrong, hence we desire to have the matter thoroughly can vassed before it i9 too late; itwill nev er do to keep still until our names are written down as legal voYers and. then say "ih dear, I wish I didn't have to go to the polls." CTRC8 Alton. . 4415 Sup't. of Schools. : II EDITED BT THE WUMAX'I CHSISTIAH TEH FE8AKCE UKIOX. "For God. and Koine, and Native Land." Mr. Eli Johnson of Brooklyn, N. Y. will probably pss through Nebraska about the first of March, on his way to Australia and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union hope to secure him for oue lecture ia this city. "Mr. Johnson is a native of the state of Ohio; he was converted to Christian ity in 1856, and at once became an active worker in Sunday schools. lie was at one time connected with the Bethel Mission school in Cincinnati. He was a member of the executive committee of the United States. Chris tian Commission during the entire war. He went to Chicago in 1863 and then aided in building up the Home for Sailors. Everything which Mr. Johnson possessed on earth was con sumed in the great fire in th&t city. He was chosen the agent, of Cincinnati to disburse the money given for relief in Chicago. In 1S74 he moved to Brooklyn, and at once became actively engaged in the temperance cause. He has traveled over thirty-six of the states of the Union and through Can ada. In the work, he has crossed the ocean four times. He has lectured throughout England , twice over Ire land, once in Scotland and once in Sweden. He was invited to lecture in Paris, but refused, as he ascertained he would be expected to advocate moderation in the use of liquors. Mr. Johnson has been favored with the presence of the English nobility at his meetings in London. He appeared by invitation, before the House of Lords' committee on the Adulteration of Liquors. Mr, Johnson joined the I. O. G. T. in 1875, and is at present a mem ber of the Amulet Lodge iu Brooklyn. He delivered his lecture on "What they Drink and how They Make it," at the Boooklyn Rink, to an audience of over two thousand people." ' The Gospel Temperance meeting, of last Sabbath afternoon, was addressed by Elder Ross, and listened to with pleasure by many and we trust with profit, too. On next Sabbath, the Meeting will be addressed by Mr. Mcintosh. . The Hour, commenting upon the drinking habits among women on this side of the Atlantic, says ; "In New York tippling among women is not as common as it is in the more moist and sluggish climate of England. Our bright, sparkling air gives a buoyancy to the spirits, which takes the place of champagne. But it would be a great mistake to suppose that women here do not drink a good deal more than is good for them, and that many happy households have not been broken up by this fear ful vice. In Canada the love of drink is very strong among women. The shop where worsted and silks for em broidery are sold are especially con structed so as to have a little bar in tue rear, ana ine iairest or the sex may be daily seen by the initiated imbibing cocktails and other fancy drinks. This tippling is only to be found among the Anglo-Saxon popu latiou. That the drink temptation abounds generally in what is called society life and that it has many victims amoag American women, there is evidence only too abundant and painful. Tony Pastor In Trouble. lony Agistor, or xsew lork, who is now with Lis inimitable variety com bination, making a tour of the piinci pal cities or the Union, is recognized as the leading character vocalist and variety performer of the United States He owns and runs a first-class theatre on Broadway, New York City, and h; gathered about him the best troupe of variety artists that could oe obtained riie corrpany has just completed a brilliant engagement at the YV&Inut street Theatre, Philadelphia, and after the present tour they will reappear in lony iJastor own theatre in New York City. Mr. Pastor is the origina lor of his peculiar school of character singing, and has made himself im mensely popular, having realized by his talents a large fortune. The writer of this article met Mr. Pastor recently at the Bingham House, u Philadelphia, and found him as gen ial iu private as he is amusing before the public. During our conversation I inquired as to his physical health, and he replied that, notwithstanding the strain upon him in the discbarge of his professional duties, it was excel- ent. lie had occasionally severe pains, either the result of rheumatic attacks or colds, but any complaints of that character never troubled him ong, as he had found out a remedy for all such annoying affections. I asked him what the remedy was, and he re plied, "St. Jacobs Oil." I then learned from Mr. Pastor that he considered the Great German Remedy an excel lent preparation for the cure or relief of rheumatism, and that it was about the only thing used among profession al people for that distressing com plaint. He took bottUs of it with him whenever he went traveling, and would not be without it, and knew that it was very popular with a number of members of his own company. A con versation held subsequently with va rious members of the organization re vealed the fact that St. Jacobs Oil had been performing most invaluable ser vice for them in the way of curing of rheumatism. Nearly everv artist in the trjupe used it, and was enthu siastic in its praise, and the writer was really forced to the conclusion that Tony Pastor was certainly in luck n having so valuable an article known and employed bv his inimitably good company of performers, for it enabled every one to be always in his place, thus insuring comfort to '.he manage ment aud genuine satisfaction to the public. Tony Pastor would certainly be iu trouble without St. Jacobs Oil. At least, other managers whose artists have been temporarily unsupplied. have noticed the difference between St. Jacobs Oil in stock and St. Jacobs Oil out of stock among the members of their companies.
