The Republican prohibitionists of
Wisconsin came very near electing
enough Democrats to the Legislature
to secure the repeal of the temperance
laws already in force. Inter Ocean.
OUR dispatches yesterday peinted
out clearly that the Ureenbackers will
hold the balance of power in he or
ganization of the House of Represen
tatives. The new house lias seen
moie changes in advance of its meet
ing than are usually recorded in the
two years of the lift of that body.
After the elections last year it stood
as follows: Republicai.s, 147; Dem
ocrats, 134; Greenback Republicans, 4 ;
Greenback Democrats, 4; Straight
Greenback, I; Readjusters, 2; Inde
pendent. 1 ; the Republicans thus hav
ing a majority of one in the full
House f 293 members. Recently a
Republican elect from New Hamp
shire (Farr). a Di-mocrat-elect from
New York (Fernando Wood), and a
Democrat elect from South Carolina
f O'Connor.) died, and each has been
replaced by si man of his own party.
Then, Five of Maine, Miller and
Laphatii of New York. Aldrich of
Rhode Island and Conger of Michigan
have been elected to the Senate, all of
them Republicans and all being suc
ceeded by Republicans. The weak
spot lias appeared in the Eleventh
New York District, where Levi V.
.Morton, Repm lican, resigned to be
come Minister to France, and R. P.
Flower, Democrat, has been elected in
his place. This leave the Republi
eans in a minority of one, though if
Rev. J. Hyatt Smith, of Brooklyn, the
-Independent," votes for a Republican
Speaker, as he has said h will do. it
might still give the Republican's the
Mgauizaliou of the House.
