Last wek Tuesday night the rain
a.nd wind sforra which here was only
a moderate one wa3 of such violence
at Omaha, that the evening train to
Plattsmou. h had to be abandoned and
a number of the parties who had gone
ip expecting to return, after being
thoroughly drenched reaching the
depot, were obliged to return to a
hotel and put up for the night. The
ladies of the party think there is one
gentleman in Plattsmouth who is par-
ticularly good in assisting those in
distress.

Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Roberts desire
to return thanks to some unknown
friends for a delightful and appropri
ate serenade ou Saturday evening last.
Joe informs us, on the square that the
music was Superb; and the intent of
the singers together with the moon
light which mingled without a note of
discord in the melody, aided by tle
slight circumstance that they had
been married a few nights before all
tended to beautify and soften the har
mony to such an extent that he doubts
at this moment whether his melodious
visitors were ef this mundane sphere
or dropped from tho comet streaked
regions above on this (as Frank
Stadter once said) suspicious occasion.
Be that as it may, and wre they from
heights above ordepthsbelow.the kind
ness of the visit and the delightf illness
of this kind of a charivari contrasts so
favorably with ether experiences
that they feel as if some return should
be mad and that is why "this
appears thusly.
Mr. Henry Stork, the cattle man
who was so terribly injured by falling.
from the bridge some four months
ago was sufficieatly recovered to be
removed to his home near Tekamah,
Burt County, last week Thursday. He
was carried from hotel to depot on a
stretcher. Mr. Stork had a long
weary time of it, lying upon his back
for fourteen or fifteen weeks, with
both legs broken, but we hope his
worst trial is now past.

the road now?" the Reviewer in
quired of Mr. Pilling.
"There are less than a dozen, was
the answer.' "There's W. C. Coup's
show, Forepaugh's, the so-called Bar-
num show of Bailey !c Hutchinson,
Bun Robins & Colvin, -Sells Brothers,
the Inter-Ocean of Bachelor & Dorri?,
Old Jhn Robinson, Van Ambergh,
the Pacific circus, Shelby, Pullman
& Hamilton, John II. Murray and

"How did he come to go into the
show business?"
"I'll tell you: in 1870 he was living
in Wisconsin, and there met Dan Cos-
tello, who was running a boat show
on the lakes. Mr. Coup was in the
cheese business. He built the first
cheese factory ever in Wisconsin. He
also established a National bauk at
Delevan. Well, he saw money in
Costello's show and went in as a part
ner, gaing alwng to look after the bus
iness and in one season succeeded in
making $30,000. He had a menagerial
head on him you see; was born a
showman. He went to :ew xoik
with his head full of plans, and saw
Barnum, and proposed to him to es
tablish a bigger show than ever ueiore
attempted. Barnum fell in with his
plans at once, and in 1S7;J was put on
the road the Great World's Fair,
owned by Barnum & Coup, and man
aged by W. C. Coup, mat was a
wagon show and oniy sioppeu at wie
largest places. It made a mint ot
mney. In the winter of 1872, while
talking to Barnum, Mr. Barnum said
to Coup that he was getting too old to
travel. Mr. Coup then proposed to
put a show on the Tailroad. Mr. Bar
num said it was the very thing and
the railroad show was built. Mr. Bar
num's health gave out and he went
to Europe, leaving Mr. Coup in full
management. WhileIr. Barnum was
in Europe Mr. Coup got to thinking
over a plan for a larger and more
novel show feature than the country
had ever seen. The hippodn rue bus
iness came into his mind, and he con
cluded to build a hippodrome in New
York. He called his plans m full to
Barnum, anil asked if he would join
him; Mr Barnum cabled back, "no,
expense too great;" Mr. Coup again
cabled "if you will not join, I will
build myself and carrv on in my own
name. When Jiarnum get mat no
cabled back: "I will join yu if you
will call it Barnum's hippodrome, and
allow nobody to know that any one
else has any interest in it;' Mr. Coup
was to have a silent partnership, lie
stipulated . that he was to have full
sway and run the enterprise himself.
There s where Mr. Coup made a grand
mistake. He should have gone into
the hipuodrome alone, and had he done
so, he would have made ten million
dollars.

biggest show week Chicago ever saw".
"What does it cost to run your
show ?" inquired the Reviewer.

combined with a museum, menagerie
and circus. The hippodrome tent is
without exceptionr the largest in the
world, being capable of seating 14,000
people. You may judge when I men
tion a few figures. We have employed
in connection with our monster es
tablishment, 500 men and women, 475
horses, 14 principal advance agents
21 assistant agents, 3 advertising
cars, 46 bill posters, 1 elephant car, a
bands of music, 100 musicians, 100
cages and chariots, 100 principal per
formers, 200 auxilliaries, 3 circus
rings, or four including the ring in
the vast hippodrome, which is nearly
nearly half a mile round.
"You can hardly form any estimate
of the cost, but I am safe in saying
that it is not far from half a million
ef dollars. Our performers number
over 100, and if I should, as many do,
call all our supernumeraries I could
claim 1000 as the tournament in
which every nation en earth- is repre
sented in their particular costumes
and elegant court dresses fully attest.
Our salary list in the rigs
alone amounts to fully 1,000 more
than any show that was ever organ
ized. Our canvass men average
about S40 a month each, including
three "bosses". We have fifty more
than any other show in existence, and
they are usually paid SIS; the differ
ence in salary alone, exclusive
of board, would be 0,000; adding
