THE HE&AitK - An English Tale of American Life. Briulford (Eng.) Observer. Jack Finehart had one love aSTair, ami only one. It was his sole romance in life, and be was very chary of talk ing about it. But I learned, the facts, and tliev form a startling commentary on border life and the character of the man. He and his brother both fell in love v.ilh the same girl, the niece of an offi cer iu the regular army, then stationed at Camp Douglas. Utah. Jack could hate as well as love, and he could make and keep a promise. He ami his brother came t aa agreement by winch both .men pledged themselves never again to see or s'eak to the young lady, the pen alty for a violation of the contract bing that the offender shou'.d tiieat'the hands of the other. The brother shook ha nils owr the- bargain, and each went his wav. Six ve::rs ::ftcr. Jack sought out his broth "r, traveling over 2,000 miles to do sc. II." told him fju'etly that he had broken his oath, and wanted the com pact k'pt. The brother remonstrated, but Ja.-k was linn as adamant, lie had forfeit e I a pledge, and he was ready to ilie. The eud of it all was that the two brothers met on the hank of the Platte river one lovely Summer evening. Jack drew a heavy derringer, cocked it, and handed it to his brother. The latter a few pace? levelled theweaj more at J:u-k "I :rew on. and hv)!;ed o:ue can't do it,' he said. Kin.-hart stood there; solitary tall. his arms fo'ile-J, and an expression of tjiiii-t mv'.aiie!io'y on his faee. "1 am readv," was his sole reply. The broth er leveled the pistol, took deliberate aim r.nd pulled tie; trigger. The cartridge did, not explode. Jack took one long euiet look at it and seeing his brother j.tioiit. to lire a-"ain. once more srazed at the, river. Suddenly the brother raised his arm. and the deadly weapon whizzed through the air and found a last resting r.';ieVienoath-the turbulent waters of i the ru.shinrr stream. Jack advanced in an ire r. "You are ft i primer" he said: "I would have killed von," and disdaining the proffered hand J - . . . . . . . - 1 T il . oi his forotner lie siroue rap;ui) awaj The two never met again. American Prosperity. In the total valuation of national wealth the United States stand near the head cf the list third on tiie list of all western nation-'. Tiie United King dom of (ireat Uritain and Ireland heads the lit with a capital valuation of 4-1,400 millions of dollars, then conn's France with 30.700 millions, the United States with 3-000 millions, Germany with 22,- 000 millions. - Russia witn 1;,0(XJ mil lions, and the low countries with 11,150 million dollars of capital collectively. These are the valuations made by those countries of their entire resources. The average annual income per inhabitant in various countries, however, shows how rapidly the United States are com-511"- to the front. The average annual income in the United Kingdom is .10o ; in the United States, $105 also; in the low countries, 130 ; in France, $125 ; in tlio. Hritish colonies. (J0 : in ler- manv. and also in Scandinavia, In this reckoning, Russia, with her 90 millions of people, is out of sight a? yet: flhn will not be so very long. Taking the question from another point rrf view, let us ask: What is our annual accumu lation of wealth, as compared with the annual accumulation of other nation And here we step far in advance of anv community which gives us ful estimates. It should be borne in mind however, that the rate of interest toi" agricultural capital with us is double the a vera ore rate for Europe. The annual accumulation of wealth, then, in Ger many, is 200 millions of dollars; it: 325 millions in the United Kingdom, 375 millions iu franc: in the United State it. is S-25 millions. Our increase of national wealth since 1850, says a good English authority, would be enough to purchase "the whole German Empire, with its farms, cities, uanKs, snipi manufactures, etc. I he annual ac cumulation has been o millions c dollars, and therefore each decade adds more to the wealth of the Udited Sh.tes than the capital value of Italy or Spain. Every day "that the sun rises upon the American people it sees an addition of 2,300,00!) to the wealt h of the republic.'' Sounding Erasa. Two metals enter into the composi tion of large bells tin and copper. The former gives the be'.! a peculiar brightness of tone, but it :,lso renders it brittle. The Belgians use only 2:5 to 30 percent, of tin, while the English u-e jr to 31 per cent, but the latter general ly make their bells thicker. " The reason for this is that instead of being merely chimed, they are swung around on "a wheel which brings the hammer with great f ree upon the bed. If the Helgian "bell was subjected to the "hard knocks,", of its l$ritish neighbor, it would soon crack and he remanded to the bell foundry. The Belgians do not deal their bells such sturdy blows as the Britons, but strike them with, hammers, and require a gentler stroke to call forth their full tone than do those of English manufacture. The items of thickness and proportion of the bed are of the utmost importance. They vary from one-fifteenth to oue tweit'th of the di:i:n-ier at the thickest part of the sound-bow, and the height is commonly about twelve limes the iid. k ness. The English bell is i.-.-.ul. as broad as it is long, measuring the diameter from outside rim to rim, and length from rim to top of cannon. But, in fact, the thickness of the bell at dif ferent levels is all important as that of the sound-bow, and tiie diameter of the crown as critical a dimension as that of the rim. - The small bell of the Belgians posses ses, in proportion to its size, a very deep, rich tone, and this is probably due to the wide to;-diameter, combined with the thinness in certain portions of the sivle half-way down. The way in which altering the thickness affects the tone, and even the pitch of a bell, is shown by the fact that a sharp bell can be flattened by shaving off the metal in side about ti:e sound-Low. Bell-makiug in England can only- be regarded as experimental, and the knowledge of the art in Belgium is rather empirical than scientific. Handwriting and Character. You never take a pen in your hand but you are showing something of your own character. Tiie very style of the handwriting is an element in the deter mination of character. The way ia which a man dashes off a letter is very much the way in which man uses his voice. There is a modulated ease in the tones of the handwriting. "Without professing to be experts, like Messrs. Chabot and Netherel'ift, we can certain ly gather a general idea of character from the handwriting. A minister was commenting on a very strong dispatch in the presence of his sovereign. "The language is strong," said the statesman, "but the writer does not -mean it; he is irresolute." "Whence do v6u see irres- oluti' n?" said the King. In his ?i's and g's, p'caso your Jlnj.ty' Only it is to" be s tid t ;at a great deal of hum bug is often talked by people who pro fess to be judges of handwriting. I showed a professor of calligraphy a let ter which I h :d received. Ho took a very. unfavorable view of the handwri ting. It was the handwriting of a man without learning, without genius, wi'h . out feeling. "And now, sir1 I said, "will you look at the signature!'" The letter was written by Lord Mueaulay. London-Swtetii- ;bcr. native of Seot at Ciaren 1 :i of Memory." land, lectured re.j-ntly lail on "The M;:veH After telling his audience what the v i rious mental philosophers liave ex- dained memory to be, tie showed what he could do in the memory business. Well, it's easy to iraagino a lion and a boy espy inrr each other in the forest. Let t!;e next word be 'tree.' e imagine iho boy climbing a tree to get away from 1 lion. Bet the word be Jsong.'
