Holiday excitement, aud before th
spring business fa'rly opens is a good
time to look about and see what we
have been, w hat we are, and what vn
may safely hope for and count on foi
the future.
Within the past two years tin
growth of Plattsmonth has been
wonder, one of the marvels of westeii
enterprise, for fi'tun one of the dean
deadest towns, so dead you could hard
ly give propei ty aw ay, she has sudden
ly become one of the best, in'os. thriv
ing and reliable points for bushiest
and wealth m the eastern part of tin
Mate.
1 hat the building of the great B. it
M. B. ilio.al biide at this point and
the sub- iiiiciii large and peimaneiit
impi wvt incuts in the way of sius.
Round-houses, itc, had much to do
Willi this growth, no one doubts. t
i was not the entire and only
cause by any means, l'laltsmuuth
backed by a rich and well sett ed
country, it has always had a h.le
amount of weal.h. locked up wi bin
itseif. accumulated dutii-.g the 1'ieigiit
ing days and lloui e. illy land specula
tions. It only needed the returning
confidence of a better business em, to
bring this out, and cause our own j e -pie
to develop their town, fur it is a
fact that our best and costliest im
provements, the railroad work ex
cepted, have been made by our oy
people, our old residents, with their
own means, made and earned bj t) ir
own t-ffoits in years gone by.' Viy
little comparatively, has tome fit ru
outside, or was borrowed capital.
Many new comers have of couise
put up houses, and brought wcabh
and increased our herds and stores.
The railroad improvements have
been greatly undervalued heretofore,
we beg leave to say Uat the estimates
bt-low are based on actual calculations,
from those who know.
Much of the other property is of
course undervalued from the extreme
reluctance many have, on account of
taxation and for piivate reasons, to
making known the real cost of their
improvements, so that, as a matter of
fact and in making an estimate to get
at the real weabh of the Country and
the amount spent in improving, one
third at least ought to be addvd to the
sum total, for those little things una
voidably overlooked and for under
valuation. Sir; Carruth kindly gave us the de
tails of his very handsome building
and which is one of the most substai -tial
iniproveme Us of the yeai ; It
con ven. encrs being an anomaly in a
town of this size.
Perhaps the greatest, the n ost
needed and universally demanded in
provement of the year litis been that
of a neiv substantial and commodious
hotel. Although not completed in
1880 it was decided on, the money
raised and the building nearly in
closed during that tim. It is some
thing that has become an absolute
necessity: our future growth and de
velopment m ly be said to have
come to a stand still for lack of good
hotel accommodation; when done
we shall have a very neat ai.d
suitable structure, and if con
ducted properly one of the great aids
to our future growth. Too much
cacti it can not b given to Messrs.
Guthinan for their enterprise in this
matter.
Among the new branches of busi
ness Co- templated and projected dur
ing 1SS0. is our new bank, an institu
tion which brings more capital to our
midst, which provides for further and
and enlarged business to till parties
and which will probably load to an
addititional fine building or two in
th future.
The outlook for tha ensuing year
is most encouraging; we heai of brick
s ores to be built, to replace the old
frame ones, of new enterprises to be
engaged in, and of the strengthening
and enlargement of old business
houses.
If yve avoid wild speculation and
tictiiions values yvbhout overdoing
the real business of the tow n we may
expect a ui st prosperous and satis
factory year ami a greatly enhuged
atid improved town to report Jan. 1st
1882.
The greatest want atpj constant
need of the town, now, as it has been,
is dwelling houses or houses to rent at
reasonable p' ices for those constantly
coming to our bordets. This wan'v
should be supplied, and our business
men, our bankets, our board of trade
should make this a point for the en
suing year.

ments for 1881 :
