A Bus ton outal having met and ceu
sured Secretary kichurz for the l'vnca
troublts, he cwms back in thts wise:
X refersuco, in a rtsolution adopted
brtiloa taeotiug, to the arrost of
TibblisTlast summer out on the Pwiica
Reservation, is contrasted with the re
port mads by Agent .Whiting upon the
' occurrence, in regard to which the Sec
retary adds:
"I am await that Tibbies says he
went thero to have legal consultation
with th Indian, aad that his life was
in imminent danger. Me frequently
speaks of suca perils, lie ! etus to
like the robes of raartyrdi-m. From
what I know of the two men I see a
. very good reasoa to take the word of
Agent Whiting in preference to that
" of Tibbies. Upon-that point I expect
you to agree with me some day."
As to things dono by Tibbies on the
Ponca Reservation, according to the
rtpoit of Agent Whiting, tho Secreta
ry quotes several sections ef ths revis
ed statutes, aud says:
hn a uan outers an Indian re
' sorTation and mischievously tries, by
faise promises which he cannot per
form, as in this case, or in a:y other
way, to indues the Indians to run
away. Wreaking up thoir settlements,
an Indian agont will consider it hi
duty to enforce tho above provisions
of law."
In regard to further declaration of
this same resolution, that "it shows
consciousness of wrong, and fear of
justice when the highest officials belie
their principles by denying a bearing
in the courts to those who claim the
protection of the law," Secretary
Schurz remarks, among other things,
that ho officially stated be had no de
sire to appeal from or question the
' correctness of Judge Dundy's habeas
- corpus decision in favor of the Poncas,
and that he has repeatedly recom-
' mended the enactment of a statute by
Congress to extend full protection of
the laws to the Indians the same as to
White men. "Under such circumstan-
- ces," says tho Secretary. "I think you
will admit yourself that the language
of the resolution was highly intemper
ate and unjustifiable, to sav the least
efit." .

The real Senatorial fight seems to be
narrowed down to ruddock. Van
Wyck and. Nance. Paddock is a man
of the people and has so much positive
strength that the railroads 4;tie nt
openly make war upon him while it is
quite evident that he is not the first
choice of either the B. & M. mx U. P.
interests. The other candidates suit
them belter. If a compromise is mads
it will be n Gay. Nancs who is least
objectionable to the people. We l
lievs that the gowd judgement of the
members elect to the Legislature will
lead them to vote upon the matter not
from the standpoint of any railroad
corporation, but to vote for a man who
will represent all the interests of the
great state ef Nebraska and whost ex
perience and influence will make the
best and most efficient public servant.
Senator A. S. Paddock is withoat
doubt that man; and we say this with
out disparaging in the least or in any
manner reflecting on the ability or
charicter of the eminent gentlemen
who havs been spoken of as candi
dates for this exalted position. On
the contrary, the Gazette-Journal has
ttiw highest regard for them but our
choice of Senator Paddock is basd on
our good opinion of him personally,
and more pajticularly because we be
lieve the interests of our growing
state will be enhanced by his return
for another term. Gazette-.huni:il.
