After leaving the main road a panther
crossed the path and was quickly treed

Boston's Free Baths for Elephants,
Boston Transcript.
The wallowing of half a dozen ele
phants in the frog pond this morning
was tne wonurous signi mat win long
be remembered by the thousands of
Bostonians ol all ages and conditions
who thronged the knolls in the vicin
ity, 'flic picturesque strangers from
India and Africa were not less dc
lighted. They seemed to quaff tho
Cochituatc and sport in its wave with
as much gusto as if tncy were revel
ing in some remote tributary of the
Ganges or the Nile in their native
jungles. Seen at a little distance the
huge gray backs of the tropical beasts
loomed up like (Jape Ann rocks at tne
head of the pond. At lirst they 6tood
almost motionless, but as tne reality
of the treat and their liberality came
to bo fullv believed in, they grew
quite demonstrative and willing not
only to wet their "overalls" but to lie
down and roll all except the venera
ble leader, who seemed to have some
thing akin to a religious respect, like
a fakir of India, for the ancient dirt
on his shoulders, and carried it back
to his tcntunprofauedby the ablution.
Tho younger elephants trumpeted.
curved up their trunks, stuck out
their tails straight as pokers, as in tho
pictures of elephant combats, and h
nally stooped Uown and buried their
immense heads under the water, there
remaining so long that people who
did not see the tips of tneir trunks
above the surface thought they wero
drowning. Two or them got to twi
ning their trunks, one round the
other, so as to bring their flabby lip3
into a clumsy osculation. For a mo
ment the show business was forgot,
and the proboscidians returned to
their native sports, aud yet not wholly
forgot, for one degenerate youngster
of tne herd 'went round this plashy
margin of the pond holding up the
end of his trun like a contribution
box for the apples and peanuts of the
small boy who was on hand in his usu
al force on such occasions. After
tome enterprising photographer had
secured several picture? of the bath
ing iuoiistt-rs they demurely followed
taeir trainer h.icn to tn-ir touts.

The census shows that several Mas
sachusetts cities besides Boston have
made rapid gains in population. Lo
well, which in 1S70 had 41,000, now
hiss about 60,000. Lawrence has ad
vanced in ten years from 28,921, to
38,600, and Lynn from 28,223 to near
ly 40,000. Boston shows an increase
of 130,000. The increase in the cities
and manufacturing towns has not been
made at the expense of the country
towns and villages which seem to hold
their own.
