James Patterson returned from Ohio last Monday, and is as sanguine as all me rest that liancoeK will repose in the Presidential chair next March "There's many a slip, etc.," James, and if Hancock should slip. My Grief! what a fall 'twould be, my country men I Miss Dovie Wiley returned from Chicago, Friday, where she has been studying various branches of music for the past two years. She carried a violin, which looked as if she had made a departure from the usual rou tine of woman's attempts in the musi cal line, and had become a follower of Camilla Urso. Where is our dry season? A knock-down and kick-out the back door oeeurrtd at Carroll's saloon, Monday night, which ought to have caused the arrest of the guilty party. Why was Charley Duke like a fel low that has just got the mitten? Be cause he got left when he tried to "right dress" the mule brigade. From letters to friends wo learn that celebrated London Surgeons are very hopeful of Mr. Dovey'a case, and promise to send him home greatly im proved. Thompson made a fine-looking fire man, Saturday, and the boys turned out 22 strong, put up rope swings for the children, and helped make the day pass very pleasantly. What's the reason that old woman on a mule wocld show her red stock ings so much? Answer: She bought 'em in town, and wanted the Board of Trade to know it. "See anything green" asked Phil's peanut roaster of an Omaha sport, who stood staring him out of countenance; "yes," he answered; "Didn't know I was a looking glass before," says Green-y. Some of the "smart Alecks," who always attend pic-nics, etc., accompa nied the Omahas here, Monday. They w ere advising their companions to put on their "specs" if they wanted to find the town. Prof. Albe's band furnished the music at the Louisville celebration, and those who heard it say that it was as good as they ever listened to. There is no reason why they shouldn't, how ever, with new instruments, and an old musician like the Professor. Fiaitk Hager came over Saturday morning, and his friends wouldn't let him "tear himself away" till Tuesday p. m. He called on the "Herald," of course. His old chum and room-mate, Frank Cranmer, looked alrn'ost as hap py to set Ilager, as he did two or three weeks ago, when ? From Lawyer Windham we re ceive the Brief of the case of the City of Plattsmouth vs. Jno. Fitzgerald, Wiudham, Webster & Gaylord. Atty's Plaintiffs in error. In Supreme Court of State. This involves the legality of the Avenue bonds, or rather fund ing bonds issued in place of orders for same. It seems to be a very readable brief on our side, but the S. C. may look upon it differently. The Helicon Band boys are receiv ing some solid ard valuable instruc tions now-a-days from Prof. Robinson, and a marked improvement is already discernable. About the only substan tial encouragement they have ever re ceived from the citizens was the S.jO for their services on Satuiday, which ought to be repeated every time occa sion presents, to partly pay their cur rent expenses and for their time. Mike Schnellbacher had a buggy, h nice buggy. Mike Schnellbacher loaned his buggy to a friend. He ain't got such a nice buggy now. If Mike had been married, as he ought to have been years ago, he'd know better than to loan his buggy. Alva Drew's got a boy, nice boy, too. Alva Drew's boy was driving this way from the pic-nic grounds, south of town; Mike's friend was driving t'oth er way. They met; they .parted; and two buggy-tops and the small boy wero lying hors(e)-du-combat on the path. Such is life. Who pays for Drew's bug gy is now the question. Wanted ! Cash ! ! Cash ! ! I See here, you fellows "what" have sold your cattle and hogs or grain and were going to pay the Herald please come along. We never were so hard H we want money and must have money, now, right off. We have that Press to liav for. Paner to get. bovs I are gettiug ahead of us and our grub's giu out. If some of you don't pay up ! soon there'll be collectors's bills to ; add to your account. Old accounts and Notes must be paid promptly or : we shall certainly see if they can be j collected by law. I6t2 PLATTSMOUTH PRECINCT AHEAD Republican Meet in; A meeting of the Republicans Plattsmouth Precinct will be held of at Taylor's school house next Saturday night (July 10th) at 7 p. m., for the purpose of forming a Garfield and Ar tnur ciuD, ana taking other necessary steps to organize and open the cam paign. Tho members of the Independeat Order or uoou lemplars are all re quested to be at Lodge next Wednes day evening, there will be a good pa per and interesting programme besides the regular business. Postponement. Owing to the weather being so un certain and other meetings of import ance at the same time, the Lecture at the M. E. Church to-morrow (Friday) evening will be postponed until next Friday evening, July ICtli. The New Fair Grounds. Our new Fair Grounds are partial ly fixed, the grove is cleared out, the track leveled so a3 to make a very good grade, and other improvements in fencing &c, made. The buildings will be up by next week. But it moves too slow and we want money, must have it. A meeting will be call ed early next week of which due no tice will be given by card and county members and all should be there, it is important. Try and arrange your bus- ness, stockholders.so that you can pos itively be present at that meeting. The 3d at South Rend Was celebrated by a large respectable crowd. The Elm wood Brass Rand furnished music for the occasion and did themselves credit. Tho two "events of the day" were the reading of the Declaration and the speech; the form er by Mrs. L. Phipps, who, according to the judgment of many there, deliv ered the same better than they ever heard it delivered. Mr. J. B. Strode was orator of the day, and held his audience breathless, while he forc- bly and quietly delivered a very ap propriate half hour speech. Of course everybody had a basket of lnnch, to which they did justice, and then the music, dancing, glassball shoot ing. swinging, &c, wound up a very pleasant day to all. The Omaha Excursion. The long talked of excursion from Omaha came down Monday, about 800 strong, 10 coaches. Owing to the rain in the morning, the managers backed out once; but the children insisted on comiug, and they came. As it turned out, the day was really fine for the brt siness, and everyone turned out to en joy themselves. Among the visiters we knew, or that called at the Her ald office, were Col. Watson B.Smith, Major Balcombe. and Capt. Fred Xye. of the Republican, and Mr. Reming ton, of the Herald. It made our town lok quite gay for a while. Now that the 3d, 4th and 5th of July are over, we will return to our daily routine once more, and business will fall back to its normal condition. A Croat Enterprise. The Hop Bitters Manufacturing Company is one of Rochester's great est business enterprises. Their Hop Bitters have reached a sale beyond all precedent, having from their intrinsic value found their way into almost ev ery household in the land. Graphic. Weeping Water Items. Ed. Hekald: MivE. Woods' daughter came just one day too new late lor our vv . v . Celebration. Everything passed off pleasantly here yesterday, vorybody seemed well pleased and abundantly satisfied with the proceedings from first to last. To our credit, be it said, not a drunken man was seen here yesterday. The sports were splendid and the pro gramme for the day well arranged. The Elmwood Brass Band was en gaged for tho day, they arrived in due season and did exceptionably well. Prof. Albee's Brass Band from Louis ville was here also and gave us some fine music, free gratis, for nothing you know. Louisville has the Banner Brass Band of Cass County. Their kindness was highly appreciated and a vote of thanks tendered by friends in Weeping Water. We had a heavy wind and rain storm in the morning about 9 o'clock but the rest of the day proved fine, and all that could be desired for the occasion Jee. DeRussy is still very sick. Ty phoid fever. All the other sick people in W. W. mentioned last week, are now doing as well as can be expected. Hunah for "Garfield & Arthur." Trixv. Free fireworks last night. Employment for Ladies. The Queen City Suspender Company of Cincinnati, are now manufacturing and introducing their new Slocking supporters for Ladies and Children and their uuequaled Skirt Suspenders for Ladies. None should be without them; our leading physicians recom mend them, and are loud in their praise. This manufacturing establish ment is managed by ladies who have made the wants of ladies and children a study, and they ask us to refer them to some reliable anJ energetic lady to introduce them in this county, and we certainly think that an earnest so licitation in every household would meet with a ready response, and that a determined woman could make a hand some salary and have the exclusive agency for this county. We advise some lady who is need of employment to send a postal card to the company, with her name and address, and men tion this paper. Addres Queen City Suspender Company, Xos. 147 & 149 West Fourth Street, Cincinnati, O. !Ct4 Onr Fourth in tbe City. . Plattsmouth for once came out strong and celebrated the Fourth of July (oa the third) in a manner deserv ing of all praise. Early in the day it was known that everything was ready and no blunders, mistakes or short comings of any .kind to bo looked out for, consequently every one was in good spirits and ready for tho fray. MAIM STItEET Presented a gay apppearanco indeed It was thronged before nine o'clock Red-shirted Firemen and Blue-coated soldiers appeared here and there, to gether with officers of the day and marshals in red sashes, giving quite a military coloring to our usually peaceful grain buying street. the procession H as formed pretty much as tho pro gramme called for, school children in front, next the band, Liedtrkranz Grand Army of tho Republic, Fire Companies and last but immensest of allthehorriole "Terrioles" with their painted faces, quaint clothes, and cu rious antics, twenty of 'em on mules their favorite animals, and two only on respectable horses. juter tnese a long string E wagons from the country, carriages with speak er and other vehicles and persons not in procession filed up to the grove. j he Grand Army mustered more members than we supposed they could and the boys enjoyed themselves try ing to "keep step" once more all the way up. The fellow in front of us couldn't "left worth a cent, and kept us out of time all the way. The Fire department turned out very hand somoly and looked neat. The little Fire-laddies" also made a good show ing. PROMINENT among the curiosities and a really in teresting feature of the procession was handsomely decorated wagon con taining a portion of Mr. Pepperberg's great cigar factory on. wheels. Two men were making cigars as rapidly a if at home, w hile on a pasteboard (or coous box) throne on top Julius, in hideous masque, disbursed line Ilavan as to a wondering and admiring crowd Several boxes were thus distributed. On and about the wagon were painted his various brands of cigars, which are curiosities in themselves; for instance' "Boss of all Cigar Makers;" "Presi dential Boom for 1880;" "Mav the best Man Win," etc. The Bohemian band followed Julius and the "Exodusters" after thai. The more noticeable part of the comic troupe was an immense Advertising wagon, with cards of all the business men of any prominence in town letter ed thereon. Then a big wagon with three "Russian bears" (Doc. Livings ton's and Alf White's Newfoundland dogs) driven by a hugely stuffed fiynre abeled "Hancock," and a female darky woman feeding them raw meat to keep 'em from devouring the crowd. Last of the parade Prof. Potte nger, Jr., with his steam calliope closed the show; and well done it all was, wo as sure you. A.T THE OROCXDS. After the people were seated and the crowded hushed a little tho Pres ident of the Day, D. II. Wheeler, open ed the ineetin' by a few introductory remarks, Rev. Mr. Band made a most excellent prayer and Chaplain Wright read the high "Old Declaration of In dependence" in just exactly the right ay. Young Mr. Estabrook from Omaha then made a short, eminently success ful Oration and Fourth f July was fairly opened. Interspersed with these exercises and throughout the toasts that follow ed tne Plattsmouth Glee Club and Liederkranz sang numerous patriotic songs and the Band shook upthe heavy melodies till the air resounded with music. TOASTS. The following gentlemen responded to toasts as their names were called and all except the Editor made No 1 speeches, (we couldn't hear his speech from the benches and are no judge of 2rtss-work anyway.) The sentiments were as follows: "The Women of the Day" Rev. Mv Gallagher. "American Institutions" George S. Smith. "Education" Prof. Love. "The Press" MacMurphy. "The American Desert', M. A.IIar tigan. During the very centie of the middle of these most interesting intel lectual flights and in the midst of a very fine glee by the Club, the most horrible roaring was heard and the ears of Charley Duke's Jackass were seen through the woods approaching headquarters for music. Refore any body realized the danger, Charley had hi3 "Invincibles" turned loose (he called it " right dress") in the woods below the stand and the Bohemian Band making the leaves quiver with unearthly sounds. This diversion over the speaking proceeded. Dinner fol lowed and a jolly good time all round. But one accident has to be recorded. A son if Mr. Frank Dickson, broke his arm from a swing. Booths were placed around and a blind calf ministered to the general amusement and curiosity of visitors. So passed our 104th Fourth, and long may she wave. Hoover, Louisville, Nebraska. 14tf The Fourth in the Country. x nw uay we celebrate, and the one day now most widely celebrated in the world by the greatest number of peo ple, was variously remembered on Sat urday or Monday in this County; at i Louisville and Sonth Bend on the 3d, and at Weeping Water on the 5th. At Louisville Mr. James Morrison spoke the piece of the day with great effect, we learn. There was a fin turn out, and everything passed off glori ously. At South Bend Bro. Strode did the needful In the eagle line most accept ably, we are informed. There was also a large and onthusiastic attendance, and a general Fourth of July hilarity, that bodes well for the patriotis m of the future. In Weeping Water they had a very large crowd, a fine display and much genuine rejoicing over the success and prosperity of this our great and glo rious country. Gen. George Smith spread the eagle and made her scream again with the fervor and vim of his embraces, while the audience respond ed in cheers of encouragement. Our special correspondents will, no doubt, give us more details of thoir matters before we go to press, and also of other places we have not as yet heard from at all. Farmers are jubilant over the ex cellent grain prospects this year, and they may well rejoice. Piano Stools. Anv one wishincr a stool will do well to call at Jos.
