Id of the boat ; but Nancy's ictticoat wa entirely mined- by the mud and water in the bottom. Ilcfore the rcd coaU could reload, they had reached the further shore, and run into a corn field near by, in which they were en tirely hidden. Captain Uellach want ed to go up the stream and thrash the drunken ferryman; but the colonel and Nancy dissuaded him, and they made the best' of,-their-way to Dover, which they read ted After a "very .weary Journey. There Nancy, who consider ed it safer to absent herself from home while the liritish retained possession of Wilmington, found herself the her oine of the hour; and ..she was feted and dined and made much of, until it Would have completely turned a les "aensible little head than hers. In after years, when her husband presented her to President Washing ton, "Ah, Mistress Til ton," said His Excellency, "your husband should in deed value an atl'i'ctton that not only endangered a life, but even sicriticed a fine bilk petticoat, for hU s:ik" I'nlrersitj ef Nebianka. Liuculn, Neb., June 22, 1880. 1513 The Reason Why All manufacturers of threshing ma chinery are so anxious to make a Sep arator l the "Vibrator" class, is be cause it has been proved beyond a question that the principles upon which the Vibrator is built are the only correct ones. It may not be gen erally known, but it is a fact, that the werd "Vibrator" is not to be found in the dictionary, but was coined and copyrighted by Nichols, Shepard & Co, f Battle Creek, Mich., for their own threshing machinery. The success of this firm is almost phenomenal, and yet it but illustrates the fact that true merit will always succeed. By discov ering and applying the true principles of construction, and using only the very best materials in manufacturing, this firm has risen to the first position in their line, and the "Vibrator" Sepa rators and Engines are now used all over the world. Any one intending: to bur any threshing machinery does him self Kre-at injustice if he does not firs: obtaiu full information from them and carefully examine the merits of their goods. The Domestic Monthly for July. It is "the fashion" at present to simplify all toilettes in a measuie; fewer pieces are thought essential to the whole costume, and for midsum mer this is certainly an advantage. In the present number a great variety of garments suitable for the season are presented with all the perfection of detail for which this magazine is just ly celebrated. In the literary department are three stories, namely: an installment of Mr. Conway's "Bertine;" "A Beautiful Girl," by Esther Searle Kenneth, and "Norah," by Lucy Marion Blirin. Mary. Ainge de Vere and Mrs. Merrighi con tribute each a poem, and there is a ketch of the Theatre Francais and its organization apropos of the colored frontispiece. Ebeu E. Rexford contrib utes a timely paper on "The Garden in Midsummer," 'and the announcement is made of the successful competitors for the prizes offered tn the June num ber. . Marple of that town, related his experience and observation in his travels through the United States. "I found," says the lecturer, "in vis iting various American factories, ma chinery much more generally used than it is with us in fact, 1 sometimes saw machinery cmploved for a process which might have been done more cheaply by hand labor; but we must remember that until recently skilled workmen were not numerous in the States, and so manufacturers were driven to the use of machinery. The Americans are much more advanced in manufactures of all kinds than many of us are aware. Cabinet furniture, ghws and china, cutlery tools, guns and pistols, agricultural implements, cur pets, linen, in fiict, soft and hard goods ol every description are made, and in most instances made well, in the Uni ted States.
