Miss Carrie Bennett returned from
Omaha last Friday, accompanied by
Mrs. Bennett, who had gone up a day
or two previously to attend the Com
mencement exercises of Brownell Hall,
in which Miss Carrie took a prominent
part as one of the graduating class, de
livering the valedictory. Her subject
was "The Headlight," and if we may
judge from the reports of the city pa
pers, was well written and equally
well delivered. Miss May Dundy, who
visited here with Miss Bennett some
time ago, was also one of the graduat
ing class, which was composed of six
young ladies. Miss Bennett having
graduated, will now make her home in
Plattsmouth once more.

Just as we were entering the Hard

Our Congressman, Valentine, is
chain lightning on getting his bills
passed. He put one through in two
and a half hours, just before Congress
closed, and it was to secure honest pay
for laboring men, too.
John Cummins has ploughed and
sown the road side in the lane leading
to Lis house, and oh how nice it looks
beside the jirusou lined paths of some
of his neighbors. Then, vnce sodded,
it is always free from weeds.
Phil Harrison has a new patent
chicken incubator, and has raised about
one hundred and fifty chickens, sixty
eggs to a lick; any color and kind of
chicks you want, turkey eggs extra,
geese hatched out for nothing.
Henry Boeck and wife celebrated
the anniversary of their sixteenth
wedding day, on Saturday evening, too,
aud had a gay old time, considering
what an undertaking it was to get his
children and family all together.

A party of the friends of Mr. aad
Mrs. James Pettee gave thca a pleas
ant and complete surprise last Satur
day night, upon the invitation of
Charles and Mamie Pettee, on the oc
casion of their 20th anniversary. This
being commonly called the china wed
ding, a number of very pretty and val-
uable articles of china r ere presented,
among them a tea-set of French Havi-
land ware, a set of decorated desert
plates aud fruit dish toniatch, a Japa
nese individual set, a toilet set, several
china cups of fiae ware, goblets, pickle
dibhes, vases, glass and china sets of
sugar bowl, creamer, &c, so many ar
ticles in fact, that space and memory :
fail us to enumerate them all. Mr. i
and Mrs. Pettee were so surprised and j
pleased that the whole evening hardly j
gave tbeta time to recover their equa

The new Fair Grounds are pro
gressing finely, the track is being grad
ed, the brush cleared out of the grove,
and the buildings will be put up as
soon a3 the money is .raised to pay
for the same. By the way there is a
6500 note on the grounds due July 6th
and the Stockholders should be get
ting ready for its payment.
In the bottom of the center wall
of the Herold block, lays the old Greg
ory safe, set in masonry, filled with
brick, in the center of which Mr. II
has placed a copy of Pagett & Stinch-
comb's History of Cass county. In the
course of ten or twelve generations
that history will possibly be found
and a record of our city and county in
1879, will be perused with pleasure
and wonder.
Guy Livingston and a son of Mr.
Woostfr, Billy (the pnyj and Friday
(the dog), were wading the Platte, that
is No. three was with No. one and two
on his back, and No .4 following in the
rear. Billy thought 'twonld be fun to
see the boys swim and dumped them;
Guy could swim, but the other boy
couldn't. Friday was called to his as
sistance, who swam to shore with the
boy hanging to his narrative.
The Board ot Trade meet to-night
and we understand there will be a
proposition brought before them to
aid or encourage the building of a Ho
tel in some way.
The Messrs. Heroldfoffer to change
their original programme and instead of
building two stores on the site of the
old Saunders House, they will run the
building up three stories, put in hea
vier walls and make a neat hotel with
fifty-seven rooms, if any aid is given
them by the town. They think S2.000
extra will do this and that the citi
zens ought to aid to that extent.
Every member of the Board of Trade
ought to be and mu3t be present, and
others interested in the welfare of the
town and owning property should give
attention to this matter. If the prop
erty owners hang back and the busi
ness men decline to interest themselves
now, we may wkistle for a Hotel here
for years to coma. Show yourselves
at the meeting to-night and be prepar
ed to put up or shut up about a Hotel.

The .Melzger Case.
The case of the State of Nebraska
vs Gotlieb Metzger has engaged the
attention of several of our courts and
has we presume, attracted the atten
tieu of a goodly portion of the people
of the county, and as a large bill of
costs has been made, which either the
county or Mr. Metzger will have to pay
we will give a brief history of the case
Mr. Metzger was arrested upon the
complaint of Henry Hoffmeister
charged with wilfully and maliciously
stoning the house of Hoffmeister in
the village of Louisville, on or about
the 4th day of May.
This complaint was filed with Judge
Sullivan and a warrant issued. Metz
ger took a change f venue from Judgo
Sullivan's court, to Judge Vivian's
court; Judge Vivian dismissed the
case on the technical ground, that the
complaint did not specify the time pos
itively enough, because it contained
the words "or about."
Another complaint was immediately
written in the presence of Judge Viv
ian, and read in his hearing, but taken
before Judge Sullivan and filed. Im
mediately after and before J udge Sul
livau issued a warrant Metzger's At
torney filed a complaint against them
before Judge Vivian aud Metzger vol
untarily walked into court and plead
guilty, and the court fined bin one
dollar.
Judge Sullivan also issued a war
rant en the complaint filed before him
and Metzger was arrested at Louis
ville and bronchi before Judge Sulli
van. Another change of vonue was
taken, the case going to Justice Arch
er at Rack Bluffs, this time.
On last Wednesday night M. A. llar
tigan appeared for Metzger and filed a
plea of former conviction. J. B. Strode
appearing for the prosecution, filed a
reply alleging that the former convic
viction was obtained by collusion and
fraud. After the case was argued, at
length by counsel, Justice Archer
overruled the plea of former convic
tion ; and Tuesday the case was tried
upon its merits and Mr. Metzger was
fined S28.00 and costs, and sentenced
to one day's imprisonment in the coun
ty jail. We understand Metzger has
appealed.
As this case is one of those growing
out of the disturbances at Louisville,
which led to the fearful tragedy there
some three or four weeks ago, and as
a large bill of costs are being piled up
we have given a history of this case.

the merits or demerits of the same.

young life, and left its parent to mourn, ere
they scarcely realized that the fell destroyer,
