Centre Valley that there is work

kelp them celebrate the twentieth an
niversary of their wedding day, and
left behind them a handsome China
tea sat to commemorate the event.
The Lincoln evening papers lay
grave charges at the door of the grand
fugleman of the temperance move
ment in Nebraska. Our sympathies
are with the temperance people who
have been long burdened with such an
ineumbus and now suffer through him.
John O'Rourke received a letter
this morning from the Sister of the
late John Tallon, deceased. This set
tles the anxiety that has grown up
with certain persons to care for the
property of the said Tallon and shows
that Mr. O'Rourke has used diligence
in searching for the heirs and oaring
for the assets of the deceased time
rights all things.
The C. K. Peck touched our land
ing Tuesdav p. m., long enough to take
aboard the Proprietress, Mrs. Peck,
who came by rail from St. Louis to
the Bluffs, and down here Monday
evening. The boat was heavily laden
with Merchandise for the up river
towns and with difficulty got over the
bar that has formed almost across the
channel between here and the Platte.
The following painted on a board
is nailed up on the corner of Car
ruth's store, at which a boy is engaged
to "pint" whenever any one stops:

Mr. Hesser has his flower stand
running again next to Leach's, and it
is well stocked with bedding plants,
among them as handsome a collection
of verbenas as we have seen for many
a day. Mr. Hesser himself is here,
there and everwhere. Down to Xeb.
City, up to Omaha and out to Lincoln
taking with him large stocks of plants,
and, we hope disposing of them all
at good prices.
Joe Fail field had his famous Sun
day surveying suit up, this Court.
Lawyer Wooley tried his hand (shall
we say, his maiden hand ?) thereat, and
by the way, gained the suit for Joe
but we started to tell a story. Old man
Allison was on the rack (the witness
stand) and Wooley says: Do you un
derstand mathematics V" "Yes," says
tne old man, -I do." "How much do
you understand?" asks W. "Twice 2
makes 4," promptly responded the old
man, amid the laughter of the assem
bled wisdom.
One of 'PotV Jokes.
During Court this term a case came
up entitled Campbell vs Sutton, forci
ble entry and detainer case. Windham

It had been argued before Michael Ar
cher, J. P. in Rock Bluffs and Murfin
not getting such Justice as he thought
he ought to have took seven days con
tiniiance under the Statute, went to
Lincoln and obtained a "writ of Prohi
bition" from Judge Pound.
A "writ of Prohibition is the oppo
site of a writ of Mandamus that is to
say, instead of an order from a Superior
Court to compel an inferior court or
person to porform certain acts it is an
order from the Superior Court to the
lower to prohibit it from acting for
the time being. There is an old Stat
ute it seems recognizing tins writ in
this State, but it has fallen into dis
use and many lawyers have forgotten
its existence.
Armed with this instrument young

Court until 4 p. m. on various motions,
legal dodges, &c Archer struck def'ts
answers out twice, and Murfin seeing
he was getting the "wust" of it pulled
out his Prohibitory document and or
dered the court to down breaks and
let off steam. Mike banked his fires,
put on his specs, 'lowed "he wouldn't
go agin Judge Pound," and dismissed
the case as far as his court was con
cerned. When they came into the

lated the above facts to his honor and
when he got to tho place where they
left off below said: "And now your
honor, after arguing this case for four
hours and finding himself beaten, he
(Murfin) drew this weapon on me."

ter the laugh had subsided a little,

ner propounded: "Your honor, if these
facts are true, I move that the Attorn
ey for the defendant be arrested for
carrying a concealed weapon, contrary
to law and that Attorney for plaintiff
be bound over as prosecuting witness."
His honor entertained tho motion by
an auuioie smiie, and snerin nyers
stamped his foot and shouted, "order
in the Court, or I'll have Stiles arrest
the whole bar."
Friday Evening Chancellor lair Held.
The Chancellor of our University
ectures at the M. E. Church on Fri
day evening (to-morrow) on the sub
of Temperance. It will no doubt be
an interesting and valuable Lecture,
the Chancellor being an able and
pleasant Speaker, throwing new light
on any subject he touches.
At the same time, we understand,
the Red Ribbon Club will bo re-organized
and several new additions in the
way of members made thereto. A full
attendance is anticipated.
Sudden Death.
The wife of Andy McMaken died
suddenly at Atchison, Kansas, yester
day morning, at 5 o clock. The body
will be brought here for burial on Fri
day. So says a telegram to Capt. Mar
shall. Mr. McMaken only left here
ast week, and his wife was in perfect
health then. Xo further particulars
of the sad affiction have been learned.
Mrs. M.J. Shelley will speak in
the M. E. church on Sunday evening
next, on the Success of Missions.
The "Cypress," the largest, nicest
and highest priced Soda Fountain ever
seen in Plattsmouth is being put up
by J. P. Young at the Post Office Xews
Depot. Mr. ungs enterprise, it
seems, is still on the increase, and he
determined that no one shall lead
him in the novelty line. His general
tock consists of new and original ar
ticles and none of the old style goods
find their way to his shelves and show
cases.
We lose ttis week, one of
the best young men of our town and
the B. & M. Machine Shops one of their
b3t workmen, by the departure of
Mr. Frank Hager, to accept a position
n the Creston, Iowa, shops. After an
acquaintance of four years his many
friends who gathered at the Depot
were oxceodiagly loth to part with
him, and all joined in the hearty wish
for his future success and happiness.

Church was filled to overflowing by
citizens, to listen to a Lecture on "Fig
ures and Ciphers,"by Miss Lena Arm
strong. The lecturer handled her sub
ject in a masterly manner and was
listened to with rapt attention till the
close.

'Ed. Herald: The stench from the
old slaughter house just west of Hei
sel's mill is simply horrible this warm
weather and is endangering the health
of the citizens in that vicinity. The
Board of Health should take some ac
tion immediately, looking toward the
abatement of the nuisance. It should
never have been placed in the city lim
its in the first place and all concerned

aaele, Weckbach, Miller, Sharp, Fair
field, McCallan and Gorder, Council-
men ; J, D Simpson, Clerk.
Mayor announced that tho meeting
bad been called for the purpose of set
tling claim of S. Barker against the
city, and such other business as they
deemed necessary.
His Honor then read the following
recommendations, etc., under the head
of communications:
Gentlemen f the Council : The law
provides that tlie Mayor shall from time to
time communicate to tlie Council such inform
ation, and recommend tuclt measures as in his
opinion may tend to the improvement of the
nuance, the police, health, security ana pros
perity of the Cit v. I. therefore, bee leave to
recommend that an ordinance be passed estab
lishing night watch aud police, defining tbelr
powers and dutiei. and fixinie their compensa
tion : also, the name ordinance inirht. perhaps.

There are obstructions in tlie stream which
may cause trouble. But the particular object I

say that 1 think the old culvert formerly under
the maunders House is entirely too nairow ; tne
north wall should be taken oiit, and if put up
agaiu, the water way should be at least as wide
again as at present. I think the Council should
take immediate action in this matter.
Gentlemen. I will take this oceasion to say
that the law. which requites saloons to close at
a certain hour at night, aud to remain closed
during the Sabbath day, has not been enforced
to my entire satisfaction during the past year.
There are eentlemeu engaged in the traffic who
respect and observe the law. and as a matter of
justice to them, if for no other reason, the oth
ers vhould be compelled to obey the law or c
out of the busiuess. livery drunken man eeen
en the Sabbath day is a living witness that
some one's license should be revoked, and that
he should not again be granted a license. I
wish to call especial attention to the drug
stf res which retail by the drink, and I hope
and expect that we will be able to stop this vi
olation of the law. I think it can be done if of
ficers will hut do their whole duty. Saloon
keepers are required to present a petition, ask-

give a bond conditioned that they will obey the
law : they have to pay into the Citv Treasury

on their 2d and 3d readings and final
passage.
On motion Judiciary committee was
requested to maks ordinance defining
duties of officers of the city.
On motion W. B. Shryock was rec
ommended to Treasurer for tax col
lector, his compensation to be 10 per
cent, of all moneys he collects.
On motion Clerk was instructed to
make settlement with City Treasurer.
On motion committee on streets was
authorized ta act in regard to widen
ing culvert, north of Main street, if
satisfactory arrangements could be
made with Mr. Hcrold.
On motion Council adjourned.
