One of the city horses that usually runs with a steamer is sick, and is not on fire duty at present. When the de partment left the house the othercven mg at the alarm of fire, this horse was left hitched in the stable alone. The Bates-street side door was left open, and the old fire-horse broke his fasten ings and in a few minutes was follow ing the firemen. He came up with one pair of horses and found that his mate was not one of. them, so he gal loped down Lisbon street until he found the span in "which his old mate was paired. Ho quietly took his posi tion beside the other horse and re mained by his side until the team re entered the stable. It is related of "Old Tige," a city horse, who former ly worked in the department, that while serving the Street Commission er, on some ronely road in the suburbs, he would frequently prick up his ears and suddenly start "for tlac city with out any apparent reason. When they neared the city, the driver heard the fire-alarm whistles and bells, which had reached the horse's cars when not a sound came to his. It was so evi dent that "Old Tige" knew what he was about that he was allowed a free rein and to do as he pleased generally. . Profitable Hens. Land, and Home. Those who breed, or expect to breed large numbers of fowls want the most profitable variety. Parties who raise a few fine birds for pleasure rarely think ofgetting a profit from their pets. With farmers, however, who look on the prosy 6ide, letting the po etic take care of itself, mid demand a profit both in eggs and uVvs'i, the ques tion of breed is generally a secondary consideration. But in most crises it pays better to breed pure-bred lowlsy for the simple rcasou that the extra line ones, in point of markings, form, etc., can usually be disposed of at double the price, and often more than could bo obtained in the ojcn market if sold for food. Thisi"act is well worth remembering, especially when we take into account the fact that pure-bred fowls arc as profitable to raise for market as common ones. No particular brcitl combines the heav iest weights and greatest laying' pow ers, though the; famous Plymouth Rocks come nearer, perhaps to a gold en medium than any other. If our prime object is eggi, then the Leg horns, noticeably the brown variety, take general precedence though but small bodied and com tact fowl. If you Avih heavy weight, and don't care for the eggs, then the Brahtnas and Cochins claim front rank, the light Brahma heading the list. After all, care and proper management determ ine the profit, lor all kinds of stock, whether fowls or cattle,' must have plenty of the right kind -of food and water to keep their machinery in mo tion and make use of all their power.
