Vk ayne cwuniy larmer Had some wheat stolen a few Rights ago, and he vras so sure th3t he knew who the thief was, that he came into Detroit and secured a warrant for a certain young man living near him. V hen the case came up for trial in Justice alley the defendant said lie could prove an alibi. In order to do this he had brought iu "his girl, a buxom lass of 22. She teok the stand and swore that he sat up with her from 7 o'clock in the even ing until broad daylight the next morning. "People can very easily be mistak en, observed the plaintiffs lawyer. "I don't care I know ha was there," She replied. "What did yem talk about?" 'Love!" she promptly answered. "What time did the old folks go to bed?" "I giye'eru the wink about 10." "Sure he was there at midnight, are you t Ye3, sir." "Why are yen sure?" She blushed, looked over to her lov er and lauprhed, and getting a nod to go ahead, she said: "Well, sir, just A3 tho clock struck 12, the old man jumped out of bed, up stairs, aim nouoweu uown. barau yer roar wants some o' that catnip tea.' And we got such a start that we broke the back off the rocking chair and went over backward kerpluuck." "Then the jury must understand that you were seated on Samuels knea?" "I object," put in Sarah's lawyer, and His Honor remembered the days of bis ycuth and sustained tte objec tion. The Scribnor Art Jg-ciioj. (From"Boo7c Buyer'sGuidc,' Scribner, For March.) Reference is hero made to an editor ial in the present number of Scrib ner's Monthly, under the head of "Top ics of the Time," and ntitled "The Purchase of Pictures a Proposition. Weproposo, under the considerations thereprescnted, to establish a picture purchasing agency for the country; to make selections of pictures, statuary, aud other works of art; to negotiate their purchase, and transact all busi ness connected with the matter under any instructions frm nr patrons. For this purpose, wo have added to the corps of our Art Department, a a gentleman of wide experience in this special line of work, whose taste and judgment will bo re-in forced by that of otbers. The prime motive will be, of course, to make this agency f real service to the public, aad ko, indirect ly, to do a service to American art and artists. At present a lare number of American artists reside abroad, where it is said they find the best market for their works, and yet Americans are large patrons of foreign art. The excellence of the work of Am erican sculptors h;.s been long conced ed in Europe, and is row so well un derstood at home, that we no longer thiuk of going to foreign artists for strttue3 to graco our capitals aud parks. It is a somewhat interesting fact in this connection, that the superiority -of the work of our wood engravers w.is admitted abroad, whilst it was being questioned and doubted at home. The London "Saturday Review" has recently said, "the impartial critic who is asked where the best wood-cuts are produced has, we fear, but one answer possible neither in England, Germa ny nor France, but in America." For the proof of the truth of this "reluc tant admission" he asks "a comparison of any recent number of Scribner's Monthly and the "Corr.hiil." If we have a World's Fair in New York, in 13S3, let us make the art exhi bit worthy of the country ; to bring out the best work of our best artists, we must convince them that there is an American market worthy of their fame. The most remarkable leaning tower In jrrcat Britain is that of the Caer- Dhillv Castle, filnmorir-sinahiro Itnirm but between seventy and eighty feci uign, it, is eleven Ret out of pcrpen- tucuiar. xne castle of which the tow- er tonns a part was built about 1221, anu me caniing 01 the tower is said to have been caused by an explosion of hot liquid metal used by the occu pants of the castle to pour on the heads of their enemies at a siege which took place in 1326. There are aleo leaning towers at Uridgcnorth Castle, in Shropshire, and at Corfe Castle, in Dorsetshire, both caused by the use of gunpowder (luring the civil war be tween King Charles and his Parlia ment. Of churches with crooked spires, the mosi noteworthy l the famous one at Chesterfield, in Derbyshire, It leans six feet toward the south, and four feet four inches toward the west, and its height is iwo teet. 8o peculiar H the distorted appearance of this steeple that it is said to appear to be falliii!? toward the spectator from whatever point he approaches it. There are several traaitions extant resecting this singular architectural deformity. One is that the builder, a native of dieslerhcld, having agreed to erect a church, did so, finishing the tower without adding a smre. The authori ties of the town, not being satisfied with the structure, apjealed to the Attorney-General, who gave his opin ion that the spire was a3 much a nart of the church as tho tower, and that consequently the Duik'.er must finish his contract by itsaddition. The sub- jeet was, however, fully discussed at a meeting of the Institute of British Architects in January, 1855, and it was ascertained that tile oak planks on wnicn the tramework on which the spiro rests, are much decayed on one side, w hich is sufficient to cause the divergence from the perpendicular. JLhetiinucrs also have the appearance ot r.avmg ocen ueea in a green ana un sound condition. The action of tha sun upon the spire would therefore cause it to become crooked, and this may account for its distortion without attributing it to design. It occurred to one of two editors ir. the West, who had quarrelled, that a reference to his adversary's life would prove telling, ana he launched it off accordingly. "As for our contempo rary," he wrote, "what can he exact ed from a man who, five years ago. was peddling around with a mule, and an ill-conditioned beast at that!" Ilia rival did not deny it. "Our contem porary," he wrote in his next number, "says that live years ago we were ped dling around with a mule, and an ill- cor.ditioufM beast at that. He is quite right. We were so occupied. But we are surprised to find that the mule- has such a good memory. f & BW aJ Cry far Piici'o Ceio-la.
