The Pankonin roai business was
thoroughly argued and presented on
Wednesday before the Commissioners.
After hearing the whole matter and
consulting, they concluded to leave tne
road as it is.
If we understand the matter, if tha
present board had the original matter
under advisement, and were to settle
the road, they would cot put it just
where it is; but as that ha3 been done,
and pay for the damages received, they
think best not to set the precedent of
altering a once established road ; and
perhaps they are right. On the same
grounds any dissatisfied party could
claim change of road, whieh would oft
en causa great inconvenience.

Last Friday a fearful local feud
was fought out in Seward County. It
seems that Elder Bates and his sons
(formerly from this county) had incur
red the diepleasaro of a Thomas family.
On the evening in question tha Thom
ases and their frionds, filled up with
whiskey at Seward, and proceeded to a
school-house near tho Bates', where
they attempted to raid the Bates' fam
ily, who were insida holding services.
In the rasle9 Wm. Bates was killed
and another Bates wounded, they hav
ing nothing but clubs to defend against
the assailants revolvers.
Geo. Aimick cf this county a brother-in-law
of Wm. Bates, deceased, ha3
gone out to ascertain tho exact facts
and, to attend tha funeral. The Bates
boys all served in the first Neb. Regi
ment of cavalry and were comrades of
Mayor Johnsoa and others here, who
served as Union soldiers.
It is a sad affair of lawlessness, and
if the facts are as represented to us
we sincerely hope the assaulters may
meet just and qaick punishment.
