Races lir America Tho American Ant iqunili has an article 0:1 "Tho Ancient ltaces of America," by the Bev. S. 1). Poet. The following observations seem wor thy of thoiuht : The American Continent is not fa vorable to ft distinction in races. Tho country is too continuous for the geo graphical features to impress them mjIvcs upon people. The mountain ranjres run in the wrong directions to mark the zones ofciimaio by any phy sical barrier. If there is any erieet upon the people, tho barrier between tho nations are not sufficiently distinct to make thia perpetual. The nations have not been kept hut in to the ef fects of theie locsl causes so as to make separate ruces. The geographical di visions have not mndc ethnical ditter cucfcs. In Europe, Asia and Africa the geographical barriers are so marked 1h.1t they have made racial distinc tions which can never bo obliterated. There the e!lects of climate, soil, fool, an i modo of life are o apparent that now tho mot natural, and pcrhapsihe most scientific, division of tho ra?es i that of Asiatir,Europca!i,and African. Y'hatcvcr we may say about the his toric origin of these races, yet as far as the characteristics of the people of the Eastern Hemisphere are concerned this is the most distinctive and the most natural. But if we adopt the more common classification given by PritehHid and Blumcnbaeh, into Mon golian, M?iay, Caucasian, African and American, we find the correspondence in the colors of thesa respective vacc3 to the physical barriers of the countries which thoy Inhabit. We may not ex plain it, yet such is the lacL The Mongolian, or tho yellow races, were tho inhabitants cf the high table lands ot Mongolia and Independent Tartary. The brown races were, on the other hand, the inhabitant of the low plains and islands of tho torrid zone. The tvhite or Caucasian race wero origi xially mountaineers, of Caucasus, bat afterward settled iu the northern high lands of Asinand the forests of Europe; v.hilo the licgrt-os, or blacks were always tho inhabitants ot the great continent of Africa, where both the effect of climate and soil conspired to produce and perpetuate the physical qualities for which they are distin guished. As to the red or American race, the very fact that this distinc tion has been recognized, and that the race extends across the twocontinemt. proves in itself that on the Western ilemispbcre there is an exception to thegeneral rule. The radical charac teristics here extend through all the geographical barriers, across the var ious belts of latitude, and we find an homogeneous character iu the inhab itants of the entire hemisphere. According to that classification which designates the American as the red or copper race, the physical geo graphy oi the country has produced no ethnical lines. In other respects, a!fo, it is apparent that the physical geography has not made any marked ethnical differences, ll was the opin ion of Dr. S. G. Morton, after a long study of the skuiU cf the American races, that there was no racial distinc tion between the inhabitant of this hemisphere. This opinion may not be entirely tenable, and even was hetd with uncertainty by that distinguish ed ethnologist: for the differences be tween Peruvians and Mexicans, and between the A.tecs and red Indians, arc too manifest ; but the idea tiiat tho racial pcculiariticaof skull or skeleton were canr-ed by the geographical sur roundings has never '.o car knowledge been mamtair.d. With the singlecx ception of Esquimaux, whose pyram idal head ami squat form have been a1.5igr.ed to their lifch diet and hyper borean life, no race on this continent has been nsig-.itii to its locality and ti.ere recognized as a creation cf its own environment, a human raca ba lougiiig to an earth mold. r.
