Yoa Kissed Me.
IT FLORENCE PERRT.
Ton listed me! my heart sunk low on yoiu

With a feelintr of shelter and infinite rest;
And the holy emotions the tongue dared not
speak.
Flushed up like a flame from niy heart to my
check,
Tour arms held me fast, oh, your ariaswercso
bid ! !
Heart heat against heart, in their passionate
hoid!
Tour iriance eeenie 1 drawing my soul through
my eye s
As tiieeun draws tiie mist from the ea to tiie

An.l y ur lips clung tomiaetill 1 prayed in my

Tiiey nii:cht never uuc.asp from that rap'ur

Tou kissed me! my heart, and my strength,
and my w 11,
In delirious joy for a moment stool still
Li:e had for me then no temptations, no
charms
So vista of pleasure outside of your arms,
And were I ibis instant nn anirel possessed
Of th -joy and peace that are given the blest,
I would fling my white robes unrepiningly
down.
And tear from my forehead its beautiful
crown,
To nestle once more in that haven f rest,
With your lip iiion mine and my bead on
your breast.
Ton kissed me! my sou! in a bliss so divine.
Reeled and swooned like a fool eh man, drunk
en with wine,
I thoushtit was delirious to die then, if death
Would but come while my lips were yet moisi
with your breath,
Twere delicious Iodic, if my heart might grow
cold,
While your arms wrapped me ronnd in that
passionate bold :
And these are tho questions I ask day and
ni lit,
Wits my life tate but once such exquisite
delight?
Would you care if your breast were my shel

And if you were here, would you kiss me

and iincomplaininoly she turned to

Year alter year rolled on. Elsie
' spun and wove.aud direeled her maid

and nursed her brothers and si-icr,
nn I in all things slrove to supply to

j In time tbe wounds of her heart

every touch, and learned to find solace

called them, while habit made, her du

The midniirht hour had already

lonof, lonely viil had made her timid
and nervous, and she could scarcely
repress a shr el; of alarm, as just at
that moment a heavy knock w is heard

j The strnntrer bowed again, and
; pas-ed her silently, as she held back

it that, at the sicht of that t 11 muf

She stirred the smouldering embers,
and threw on fre-li wood, which

cheerily up the broad chimney. Leiv

When she came ba'-k she busied her
self, silciiily, in preparing refreshment
for i lie slrinuer, who siill sat beside
l-e-hearlh casting curious ".lances tit
her as she moved about. Thrill after
thrill shot througa Elsie's tram 3 as
she met those bright, s tran ire glances.
She had begun lo reel almost fright

up and down the world are wont to
notice, with somewhat of jealousy, the
tokens of domestic happiness- that are
denied to us."
He was silent, as if waiting for nn

emotion, answered quietly :
"There are children here, lr it not
mine. I have neither hu-btnd n r

up from her heart, s she thought of
what might have been.
Just then tbe ginlener came stamp

Your meal is prepared," she said ;
"when you have partaken, the servant
will show you to your room."
And bidding her truest good niirht

Throuoli the long hours, until the
late autumn dawn, she tossed restless
Iv upon her couch, thinkiur much of
the strange guest, and marveling why
his image mingled so continually with
her vision of the past.
The next morning, when the breik

spoke of his departure.
"Ilefoie 1 go, mndam." he said. " I

Influence of. Newspapers.
A school teacher, who had been eu
paged a long time in the profession,
and v.itnes.-ed the influence of a news
paper upon the minds of families and
children writes as follows: I have
found it to be a universal fact, with
out exception, that scholars of both
sexes, and of all ages who have access
to newspapers at home, when com
pared with those who have not, are :
1. Hotter readers, excellent hi pro
nunciation, pii I con equenlly read
more understand ingly.
2. They are better spellers, and do-
fine words with case and accuracy.
3. They obtain practical kuowledgo
of geography in almost half the timo
it requires of others, as the newspa
pers have made them acquainted with
the location of the important place?,
of nations, their government and do
ings on the glolx.
i. They are heltergrniinninans, for"
having become so familiar with every
variety td' style in the newsp tper, from
the common place advertisements to
the finished, and classical oration of
the statesman. They more readily
comprehend the meaning of the text,
and consiitntlyanalyze its construction
with a oc u racy.
5. They write botlcr com po. it ions,
usiii better language, containing
nore thought nioio clearly and mora
cot ioi-i Iy expressed.
-'. Thoe young men who have for'
year been readers of newspapers al
ways take the lead in debating socie
ties exhibiting a more extensive
knowledge upon a greater variety of
ui ejects, and expressing their views
with ri eater liuencv, clearness aul
correctness.
