THE HERALD
Satisfying' a Patient.
Common sense frcncrallyrecoininciid9
physicians as -.veil as other men to
ji'opular favor, but there are exception?
whore somethnii? uncommon better
received. The lloosicrs listened to a
speech cf Gen. Jackson, but would
hardly be satisfied he was a great man
till I19 shouted a string of Latin
phrases "ii! pluribu3 mmin," "jMul
tmn in parvo," Sinc qua iun!" atid
thou they vent the air with wild hur
rahs for him. A nice invalid was
harder, even, to satisfy than the lloo
fCrs. The first physician in his case
was die-charged because he was honest
enough to tell him that he had a sore
throat, and the second doctor, having
eomo hint of the fact, answered the
tick man, when questioned, tliat his
ca.e was highly abnormal, and that it
had degenerated into "synanchc ton
sillaris." ':01i, doctor," said the patient, "do
say that word again."
"Why, sir, 1 said that you were at
prese nt laboring under svnanche tou
tilaiis." "Why, just think, doctor, that blast
ed fool 'told me that I had nothing but
a 6ora throat. Doctor, what was that
you called it?"
"1 told you, sir, in plain terms, that
the morbid condition of your system
w.13 obvious, and that it has termin
ated in svnanche tonsilaris." ,
"Oh, doctor, it must be a monstrous
bad complaint. Think you tan cure
mo, doctor?"
"Well, -though yo;:r diagnosis is
clear, your prognosis is doubtful ; yet,
1 think by prudent tare and shilltul
treatment you may rtcover."
"Oh, thank you, doctor; but do stay
all night, and i will pay you anything
you may ak."
lie got well of his sore throat, and
he likewise paid the doctor a generous
fee. Poller ' Mvulliy.
