Allen, Esq., fur munj years patt in successful business iu Boston, retain a livtiy interest in the piac-e v. here hv s:cut hi bjyho.nl, a quarter of a cent jry or more :igo-yik Oj.mly, Main?. Oi e of the ways oi iij;ir ifesting- this interest is in stiinu l:ting the boys of the present day to reservation, thought and experiment. Last spring ho ottered i:i seven prizes one cf 3100, o;m f 600, and live of 610 each to the boys in the County under 17 years of ae, who sitoui i produce tiie must Indian torn upon .!:e-ei!itli of an acre. I-lach bo inten.'iiir to cimp.rto was to end hi.s r.uue I lore May 1st, to the President' of the O'.uinty A;zi i cult'. mil .Society, who Lrd charge of awarding 'the priz es. About 2'JO boys reported. A eoin inittt e f one or mor e men was ap pointed in each tswn to in Moiu e ev ery parcel of ground, ami t be present at the harvesting, huski;g and weigh ing nf the crop, and report at the Town lIou-33 in Alfred on Oct. Each boy was required to lill out the blanks fur ni.'itd. giving a lull account of the trine of plowing, plantin., kti:d of seed cui'H, and full particulars a. to m;t riiire, cu'tlval ion, e'c. ( Tu .sj blanks will b j boand in book form by Mr. Al len, and kept in the archives of th Coui.ty Agricultural Socie ty for refer ence and use.) We have before us the report of Mr. John Hall, President of the iV.eietv, giving a full account of th'i results obtained by i:pj f the loys, pome 7" of whom were j-rt'smt with their paren's an 1 nianr others, at the time of making the reports. We vegr t r. fit to have been amang the numofr to have seen the displays d" the specimens of corn, and especially to have seen the bright-eyed, enter prising boys. We have spitce for but an epitome of s,me of the results. The ears v,?re reckoned at 0 lbs. far a .shelled bushel of 3-3 ih. The average yield of the whole IZi trials was just about 10J bushels of shelled corn per acre. The first prize was awarded to Moses Milliken, of Pdddeford, for lf;) bushels per acre. 2d to David J. Morrell, of Corni-di, for 1": bushels. The next five prizes went to A. O. Jiennett. of Waterboro, 1 i" bushels; Cyn-s II. Smith, of Dayton, 141 bushels; Willi;? J. Moore, of Lim erick, 142 bushels; Chsriie G. A us: in, of Lebanon, 141 bushels; and Arlbur 2-1. Peering, of Waterboro. bi-: bushels, bix boys raised 15)1 to i:;7 bushels per acre; 12 raised 130 to 127 bushels ; 2i i rwduced 110 to IV) bushel.;; 21 p:n ilueetl 100 to 100 .bushels making T2 boys who grew 100 bushels a;r! np vard. S3 othors produced from 00 to C!' bushels per acre. 2!) obtained 75 t bd bushels, and only 1 fell lrlov 75 bushels of shellc-il corn p.er acre. Xo doubt, owing to poor soil, lack of fer irlizers. etc., many of the boys getting t'ae lesser crop were entitled to high praise for their eiiorts. Indeed, we tomm-nd every boy who had the in telligence and spirit to enter the con- ti-,C. This shows what can be dene in pro ducing corn in a county in Me, l)injr Lvtw. 435 and il3 of X. latitude. Not liiving tiie reports before us, we can ):t jui!3 as to the profit uf such crops, thii cost, of manure, cultivation, etc., itr are we coucerntd as to lb is in the 1 reset: t case. The important result is . be effect upon the boys themselves, and upon man' other boys in the coun ty and elsewhere. These boys were Jed to think, reason, ohvtrce. They will cadi examine into how and why this and that one succccdtd bttter or poor er than themselves. They wiil be bet ter thinkers and workers hereafter. Mr. Allen's thoughtful of.'er wiil be worth to his native county, iu the far reaching future l esults, more than le;:s of thousands of dollars expended iu sotn9 ways tha1: might have been se lected. We heartily wish there might j be a stillman Allan for evciy county in tho wnole country; and where there is not, we suggest that a like sum -if necessary one of the .?200 priz: s often given to some fast "nag" be appro priated by the Society to the benelitof some hundreds of youths. The bojs oi '17 and under" of to-day are to be the K-jtors upon the stage a very few jears lencp. P. S. Mr. Allen is so pleased with f'.e result in York County that he now i Tiers prizr-s of $230, 630, and five priz es of 510 to the boys of tiie entire Stated who shall produce the most coin from one-eighth of an acre during the jearlSoO.
