The voico aud face "were stem and
unyielding.
Geoffrey Daird knew that fill the
piteous appeals he luid made, the as
sertions of innocence he had frantical
ly declared, had litllen upon cars not
ideel deaf,. but dossed to him.
"Yoi have been very kind to me,
ilr. Heft,' he R'lid, his voice quiver
ing with pain, ''and I hope some day
you v.'ill know that I had rather
cut ofl" my viht hand than le t it rob
you."
There was no reply, and tha boy, for
he was not 19, walked slowly from the
room, where he liad been accused of
crime, condemned and punished in a
brief half hour.
II was a widow's only son, and very
poor, but Abraham Hoyt had been
very kind to him, employing him in
light labor about ii is extensive
ground??, trying him well, and allow
ing him to read whatever he wished
in hi library.
And from the library a valuable
watch and chain had been stolen from
a table dmwer, when there was bo one
as far as con Id bo ascertained, ia the
room, but Gcoffrev I3aird.
Crushed, -bn inflated almost heart
broken, the lad walked from the house
across the wido garden, bright with
summer bloom that feenied to mock
his misery. He had kis hand upon the
latch of the great iron gate leading in
to the road, when he heard his name
called, in a clear, childish voice.
"JelF, Jeff! 0,wi?ita moment!"
And then,;turning his heavy eyes, he
Raw a fairy of ten 9ummors, a golden
haired darling, dressed all in white
coining down the broad walk with fly
ing feet.
Of all the treasures his employer
possessed, Geoffrey knew this, his only
child was the doarost. Motherless
from her birth, she had been her fa
thers idol her whole petted lite.
"JefT'shc panted, coming to his side,
you must go aw;y, papa saye, but I
know ym never, neyer took the watch!
DidvonV
42o, Miss Daisy, I never took it."
"I know it! I'm going to find out
who did take it. And Jeff, you must
take this."
She opened her tiny white ban! to
Enow lying upon Uie.pahn a broad
twenty-dollar gold piece But the boy
shrank back.
No, no, ilis3 Daisy," ho said, "I can
sot,
"Bnt you must. It is my own, my
very own. Aunt Louise gave it to mo
on my birthday. In the corner I
Ecratched '11. II.' for Margaret Hoyt,
with a pin, but I guess it won't hurt
it. Please, please, dear Jeff, do take
it"
She pressed it into his reluctant hand
and then Throwing her arms around hia
neck, kissed him with her child's lips,
saying:
"I will find out who did take tho
watch, Jeff, and then vou will come
back."
Beforo he could arswer she wa3
Fpeeding back to the house, her curls

"Good-bye! dear Jeff."
"With a heavy heart he went home

He feared it would almost kill hi3

ly 6he said :
"I had a letter from Albany this
morning, Geoffrey, from my father's
lawyer's. Twenty-firo year3 ago my
father cast me off for marrying a poor
man. He died without forgiviug me,
but to you he has left his fortune
nearly half a million of moneyupon
condition you take his name when you
are of age. I have packed up your
possessions, and v. e will go to Albany
to-night.
"Margsretr
The voice was sharp and imperative,
and Margaret Hoyt looked up from
the task of teaching little Alice liris
tow her letters, to answer, but before
Bhe spoke the beauteiul girl who en
tered the school-room said : .
larga ret, 1 want you to come and
show Elsie how to trim my dres3 for
to-night. Everybody said you had
such exquisite taste beforo your father
failed and died."
The pale, patient face flushed a lit
tle at the cruel words, but Laura
IJristow did cot heed the pain she had
given.
"Goinc, now," she said impatiently,
"I want to look particularly well,' for
Yillard "Wharton is coming. It is the
first party since he came from Europe;
he has been vegetating in Florence ev
er so long, with a consumptive mother,
but slie died a j-oar ago, and after trav
eling awhile he has come home. Did
you know him?"
"I never heard the name."
"Come to think of it, he left long
beftra you came."
Allic's primer wr3 put aside, and
Margaret accompanied Laura to the
room where her tinery- was being pre
imrcd. for a. brilliant part' a few lioura
ater.
"Miss Hoyt," Mrs. Bristow said,
lookingup from the cloud of tulle un
der her fingers, wish you to come
down to play, and 1 wish you to wear,
white lace rutles and a white flower
or two in your hair. That wiil not
interfere with your mourning, but you
will look a little less like a mute at a
funeral."
To hear was to obey. Mrs. B' istow
waa a distant connection of M. J.Ioyt's
and when he died, leaving hia only
child to poverty, the lady impressed
upon poor stricken Daisy that sue was
nnder an enormous weight or obliga
tion by being permitted to be govern
ess, lady's maid, generally useful fac
totum in her family.
For nearly a year, she had filled the
unenviable position of poor relation,
unsalaried, and overworked, ami mueh
of the bloom of her pure blonde beau
.ty had left Daisy's face.
But tho soft violet eyes had lost
nothing of their sweetness ; the golden
hair gathered into a rich knot, was
full of waves and ringlets, making
tiny baby curls around the delicate
oval of lier pale f:tee, and the sensi
tive mouth was still expressive and
lovely.
She sighed a little as she put the soft
white rutlle into her black dress, and
a few white flowers iu her hair.
"It seems like forgetting dear fa
ther," she thought, but yet she knew
her appearance had been too gloomy
for a lestive occasion.
The guests were gathering, and Dai
sy had gone into a email sitting-room
opposite the wide drawing-rooms to
wait until she was euxumoiicd to sing
and play.
She had never boen in society In Al
bany, and knew none of Mrs. Bris
tol's friends, so she was graciously
excused from taking any njore active
part in the social "gathering Hian -to
ninnse by her singing, or help willing
feet along by playing dance music.
She was turning over the leaves of a
new magazine, quite sure of being. un
inierrupted, when the door opened,
nnd, looking up she saw a strange gen
Tardon me" he said, "I thought
thiswas the drawing-room.
Then a she lifted her face, he sprang
xorwara.
"Daisv! Daisy." he said and not re
alizing the familiarity of the address,
she arose to stretch out both hands,
saving :
"Jeff! It is Jeff P
"It is Jed',"' he answered, "or rather
it is Willaru WJiarto!!."
Then moving a chair near the one
fehe h d occupied, he t old her of 'his
grandfather's legacy, and the change of
name.
"Through good and ill, years of
p osperity ant! the temptation that as
sails all of us, I hive carried a golden
talisman, to keen my heart pure and
true," that 1 might one day dare to
bring it to yor.ricct, he said.
And through a mist of happy tears
she s w him open a large locket hang
ing to his watch-chain. min.it ure
face, no lock of hair was there, but
carefully set, a twenty-dollar gold
piece, with M. II.' scratched witii a
pin in one corner.
In the drawing-room Jlit, Bristow
wondered what detained her hero for
the evening; but when he cam? in
late ehe read nothing of the feccret that
was in bis happy eyes.
She saw his courteous attention to
her governess, but attributed them to
the inate courtesy of the young mil
lionaire, and Daisy sang as if inspired,
and threw a shower ot gleeful fanta
sies into her waltz -and g.ikp music.
But when Miss Hoyt was asked for
in Mr. Wharton's calls, when the hty
iish turnout that was the admired of
all Albany stood at the door for Miss
Hoyt to drive, Mrs. Brittow grew sav
age. "You are too forward with stran
gers," she told Daisy.
"But Mr. "Wharton is an old friend.
I knew him when I was a little girl,
and and we are to. be married in the
spring," said blushing Daisy.
And considering Mr. Wharton's
wealth and position, and his future
wife's probable influence in society,
Mrs. Bristow wisely made the best of
it, and Daisy was provided with a
trousseau snu a wedding party, tor
"Your great kindness to Allie," said
Mrs. Bristow gracefully.
Not until they had been some days
married did William Wharton say ue
diiy carelessly :
"By-the-by, Daisy, was that watch
ever found?"
"Yes. Felix wa? arrested six
months afterward for stealing some of
the plate, and in his trunk was the
watch, l'apa searched faithfully for
you, but you had vanished as it the
earth had swallowed you."
"I knew it would turn up some
where," saist Mr. Wharton, quietly,
"and perhaps now it is just as well it
was inisoed. If 1 had not left in dis
grace my darling might not have given
me my jrolden talisman."
A Street-Car Conductor Prophet.
The New York Sun stales that Con
ductor Michael Coylc, of the Fifth
Avenue line is a p roil pet. It was Mr.
Coyle who inspired an editor ot a
morning paper with one of hi pre
dictions of a general war in Europe.
This was based on Mr. Coyle's exposi
tion of cue of St. Coliunbkill's pro
phecies. According to Mr. Coylo
there were only two copies of the
Saint's original prophecies in Ireland.
One had been 6acrcdly preserved by
the Coyles, and father and son had
sworn to learn the prophecies by heart
and defend the book with their lives.
Mr. Coyle's grandfather had, by means
of the prophecies, predicted the Irish
rebellion many years before it actually
took place. The old gentleman was
known to possess the sacred book of
prophecies, and one day, when left
alone, he wa-s murdered, and the book
stolen from him. Conductor Coyle was
sacredly taught the pnphecies,and his
predictions have turned out so true, it
is said, that every one on the Eighth
Avenue Bail road Knows his powers.
Conductor Coyle predicted the Turko
ltussion war a year before it actually
took place. He predicted that Eng
land would get mixed up in the 'war,
that Kr.s.tia would be prevented from
lighting through troubles in her Em
pire, lie predicted the split in tho
English Cabinet, the Zulu war and the
killing of a foreign Prince.
