Oar Home Muticale.
The Home Musical entertainment
given by Mrs. aud Miss Simpson And
their pupils, last Thursday evening,
was fully attended by the parents of
the pupils, Stadelmana's room being
comfortably filled by an appreciative
audience.
Tho majority of tho pupils we are
i n formed by M rs. Si m pson, are i a grades
three and four, a few in five and six,
beyond which there is grade seven. be
fore entering the classics. Those in
grades three and four showed quite as
careful study and received quite as
praise as the grades above them. It is
hardly just to criticise the performan
ces of amateurs, many of whom made
their first appearance in public, aud
we have not space for a notice of each
performance; bat we can heartily give
our verdict to the evidences of impar
tial and careful instruction, given by
each and t very one of the twenty or
iiofe pupils, under Mrs. Simpson and
Mi3S Lillie's care. The facility with
which the questions in harmony and
thorough base were answered, showed
that no blind learning to strum a fee
ble polka or-waltz was allowed, but a
knowledge of the principles of music
was first incwlcated. his was farther
exemplified by the original composi
tions of three or four of the more ad
vanced pupils which, as rendered by
them, showed marked merit. We cjji
not refiain from expressiag our per
sonal pleasure in the rendering of the
quartette on piano and organ, given
by request by Masters Cummins My
ron and Frank Wheeler, and Miss An
na Livingston, which was Tery fine;
also ia the feast of glad sound given
by Miss Simpson, at the request of Mr.
DawsoB, ia Mendelssohn's Wedding
March. If, as Mr. Dawson said, we
were desirous of heariag, from the
source of this musical instruction, we
were lully convinced that it was a
fountain overflowing in a good aud
pure stream which will permeate the
musical soil and cause to spring up
a harvest of pure grain, not tares and
weeds.

We give ia connection with this, as
bearing immediately upon the subject,
the following, which has been handed
to us, and which will answer a ques
tion many times asked.
Ed. Herald: Having been asked
the question at different times "What
is Harmony?" I will answer accord
ing to my ability, using as few words
as possible. Harmony is the happy
uaitiug of discordant elements. In
musici it is the combination of discords
and concords, the richest, most satis
factory and harmonious chords are
formed" from the severest discords, but
it takes'ji.fnaster mind to systematize
mud combine the opposing toces in
such a manner as to prod oee the sweet,
rich, grand and sublime snbjocts or
tht mes,- resolv'iag them into a complete
aad Symmetrical musical form, or
one sablime and perfect whole.

now before the American public, is
' Hop Bitters. You see it everywhere.
Peopte take it with good effect. It
builds them up. It is not as pleasant

it is not a whiskey drink. It is more
