Editor IIekald: Dear Sir I see I have been the inadvertant cause of a puerile attack on the Herald. When I made the aseertlon that Mr. Martin dale was a good man, and well quali fied to fill tha office of county superin tendent, I had not the slightest desire of giving offense to some of the advo cates of the greenback r democratic parties ef Cass County, but it appears to be a deplorable fact that such is the case. This is a republican paper de voted to the principles of republican ism, and because the name of a gentle man of eithergreenbaek or democratic ic or independent principles (I know not which) was merely mentioned in the paper in terms of respect, some of its opponents declare that its editor has forsaken his party and that his pa per henceforth is to be devoted to the greenback couse. But why greenback ? Is not Mr. Martindale a republican? Was not his name proposed at Weep ing Water as a republican candidate for re-election? But, O! Tempoka, O! Mores! Yea. evea as the times and manners change so must the principles of men change to keep even with them We have no intention of retracting what we said of Mr. Martindale ia the least, as we know Mr. Martindale; be is a good man, and as far as we know. has filled the orllco creditably; but there are other men just as good, and who ceuld fill the office just as credit ably as he has. The IIekald has borne the brunt of too many summer suns aud winter gales to fall at the attack of a Watch man or a Sentinel or even a weak En terprise. Their blows fall as harm less as a snowball thrown at the mighty iron-clad. Therefore, friend Mac, fear not; let them rant and oven foam at the mouth if they will, but let the IIekalb per form its functions faithfully and hon estly and verily it shall live long in the land in which it has so long and impartially performed its duty. Hoping this frail explanation will partially satisfy the malcontents, I am Yours Truly, A rocs. Greenwood. Neb.. Oct. 20, '79. Wanted! Some potatoes and winter vegeta bles on subscription. A prominent democrat wants to know why the Republicans are stump ing the County, and making a regular canvass this fall, on Chanty Officers, something that Iia not been done be fore in years. We'll tell you all about it. It is to keep Bill Jomes from run ning for Sheriff, independen', and get ting elected. You see George Smith and Jones are great shouting cronies and one day went out on their usual Quail search nftei noons. Junes took a fresh chew and George a new cigar, and says Bill, "Tell you what I'vo a notion to g out and stump this coun ty for Sheriff, believe I could beat all you Republican Chaps, and dogged if I dou'l do it, and begin to-morrow." "All right says George, "you crack ahead and I'll have our boys out and will beat y'u, you old pigton shooter you." Don't tell anybody about this, for Jones said we musa't tell and we havn't.
