Out of the clover and blue-eyed craw,
lie turned them Into the river lane ;
One after another he let them pass
Then fastened the meadow bai s again.
Under Hie willows and over the It .11.
He patiently followed their sober pace ;
Tbe merry whistlo for once was still,
AnJ something shadowed the sunny fac.
Only a boy ! and his father had said
lie never con d let his youngest go ;
Two a'ready v re lying dead.
Under t c fot of the tiam;d'.ng foe.
Put after the evening woik was done,
And the frogs were Iou J in the meadow swamp;
Over his shoulder he s'ung his gun
And Ktoltliily followed the foot-path damp.
Across the clover and through the w heat,
XYitU resolute heait and purpose grim.
Though cold was the dew on his hurryinsr feel.
And the blind bats Hit ting atari led him.
Thrice B'nce then had the 1 tnes been white.
And tho orchards sweet with apple-bloom :
And now when tho cows came back at night.
The feeb'e father drove thorn home .
For news had come to the lonely farm
That three were lying where two had lain ;
And the old man's tremulous pnLied ana
Could never lean on a son's again.
The Summer day grew cool and late,
He went for the cows when the work waj
done.
But down the lane, fis he opened the gate,
He saw them coiiiii.g one by one.
Brindlf, Ebony, Speckle and Cess,
Sb ikn g their horns in the evening wind
Cropping the buttercups out of the grass
Uut who was it followed close behind?
Loosely swung in the Idle air
The empty s'.eove of aiiny blue ;
And worn and pule, from the crisping hair,
Looked out a face that the failier knew.
For Southern prisons w 11 sometimes yawn.
And yield their dead un:o life xguiu ;
And the day that comes with a cloudy dawn
Iu golden glory ut last may wane.
The great tears sprang to their meeting eyes ;
For the heart must speak when the lips ara

And under the silent evening skies.
Together they followed tae cattle home.

The Fields seem to be coming out.
They are a numerous and strong fami

In the midst of the uproar at Syra
