A Turkish commission on the alphabet lias recommended the use of Iloman let ters for staff military maps, because they allow more names m the same space than the Arabic character. This is regarded as a step toward Romanizing the Turkish language. "Here," said the farmer, as ho exhibited n broken jar to the manufacturer, "I packed this jar full of butter and the jar split from top to lxttom. Perhaps you can explain the phenomenon. ' "Oh, yes, I can," was the rendy reply, "the butter was stronger than the jar. A member of a rhetorical class in a certain college had just finished his dec lamation, when the professor said, "Mr. , do you suppose a general would ad dress his sohTiers in the manner in which you fpoko that piece?" Mr. Jackson recovered, and late ly lie was taken with a violent lit of coughing, something obstructing his wind pipe, and in the paroxysm the bullet waa toughed up. Japanese 3Iagic Mirrors. At a recent meeting of the London Roy al Society Prof. Ayrton gave an explana tion of the so-called magic property pos sessed by certain rare bronze mirrors, sold by the Chinese at about twenty limes the cost i f the ordinary mirrors of that coun try, r.nd which consisted in these mirrors lx'ing able to reflect from their smooth, polishinl faces the raised patterns of birds, 1 towers, dragons, or Chinese letters with which their backs were adorned. His ex jK?riments, made during the Winters of i77-'7;, had led him to believe that there existed extremely slight irregulari ties in the curvature of the polished sur face (quite invisible to direct vision), of such a nature that the thicker parts, cor responding, of course, with the raised pat terns on tiie back, were Hatter than the remaining convex surface, so that thero was less dispersion of light from the thick portion'than the thinner. He described one of a series of diagrams illustrating various experimental arrangements of con vergent and divergent beams of light w hich the authors have availed themselves of, and the use of which constituted, he raid, the essence of the system of investi gation employed by I'rot. I'erry nnd him telf, and he explained that if his theory of the phenonienon was correct, then plating the bcreen, on which the reflection of the light from the Japanese mirror was cast, iu a certain position, the phenomenon ought to disappear, and again putting the scre-en in another position, the phenome non ought to be inverted, that is, instead of a bright image on a dark ground, which hitherto had alone been w huihas been ol Bcrved by previous investigators, a dark image of the pattern on a bright ground ought to appear. This disapjearMice and alwolute inversion of the phenomenon lie said he had found to actually take place, but that he was compelled from want of time to leave the experimental exhibition of it for the Koyal Institution. V arious other facts, such as the necessity cf hold ing the screen rather near, but not very near, the mirror when ordinary sunlight without lenses was employed, was, like the inversion phenomenon just referred to shown to bo explainable only on the in equality of curvature theory, and not on the inequality of density theory. The next question that arose was, IIow was this inequality of curvature produced? This was explained to be due to the meth od employed by the Japanese for making the lace of the mirrors convex, which meth od had hitherto been quite unknown to foreigners, but which Prof. Ayrton had, after much trouble, iound to consist in scratching the face w hile cold with awier ebo, or "ttistorting rod." During the oi cration tho mirrors Ixeamc visibly con cave, but, receiving a "buckle," sprung back again so as to hecomc convex when the pressure of the rod was removed. The thicker parts of these mngic niirrorsyield ed less under the pressure, were made, therefore, less concave when under the rod, and sprung back less, or became less convex, when tne pressure of the rod had been removed. He then showed how this explained the fact discovered by Prof. Atkinson, of the Imperial University, Ja pan, in 1S77, that a tinall scratch made on iho back of a mirror with a blunt nail, al though apparently producing no ctTcct on the oilier side, became nevertheless visible as a bright line on the screen when a light was reflected on the mirror. - Xijxe Novgorod Fair.
