Thoughts Suggested during the Silent,
Waiting Monicuts, at the Memorial
Service, Monday Ere., at tbe M.
Church, in Memory of S. S.
Ilinkle, July 11, 1S7J.
A deep silence pervaded the entire
assembly. A solemn hush bade e'en
the beating heart be still. '
w e thought how fitting this silence
tbis holy hush. Truly, if "words are
silver, silence is golden," in a moment
like this; for words cannot heal the
wounded soul, nor other hearts bear
its pangs. All crusned beneath the
blow, it must suffer on till the great
healer heals them. " In vain we tried
to fancy the genial, happy, courageous
one, occupying his wonted place among
us, when, as an electric flash, came to
us the words that Mary heard at the
sepulchre, "Why seek ye the living
among the dead, ne is net here, but
is risen."
Like a mighty warrior he has fought
a good fight, finished his course, kept
the faith. Henceforth there is for
him a crown of righteousness.
Time is the battle-field for eternal
life. Who are the victors, that we
may emulate them? Is it Baron Roths
child, with his deed to Palestine, and
millions of gld uncounted? Did
Vanderbilt's money or Caesar's fame
open to them the gates of pearl ? We
have the answer: "Inasmuch as ye did
it unto the least of one of these, my
little ones, ye did it unto me. Enter
thou Into the joy of thy Lord."
Who then would not rather have'
the record of a life given for the good
of others in that trying hour than all
the gold of Ophir. " Blessed are the
dead that die in the Lord, yea, and
their works do follow them."
"I gave my life tor tliee ;
What hat thou done for me?" r
writes the poet. Every age has had
its -willing sacrificial offerings for
truth and righteousness, (in our day
we count them by the thousands) that
the enslaved might go free. In this
contlict with the enemy of mankind,
"strong drink." men are falling on the
right and on the left, We bid mem
ory stay the vision, when it opens to
tho view our dead by the traffic in
human souls, and think of Hewlet,
who died on the rostrum battling the
evil, and a Gough, who must rest or
close the -sonllict forever. Livingstone
counted his life nothing if he might
bring a Walla to the Christ height. An
eminent divine said, "wake me at the
expiration ol two hours, tnat I may
resume work,' and comparatively as
soon did his life work cease. Thus it was
with our dear departed brother. The
over-reaching beat that the life current
demanded under the intense interest
and anxietv of the hour, that victory
might perch upon the temperance ban
ners, was more than was possible, anil
the record was made up "One more
sacrifice." I. S. D. Sr Fit lock.

has a very handsome specimen of his
work on exhibition in front of the
post office, which he and the Herald
have been try ing to get some one to spit

not stain) for two days. Singular
enough no ono would consent to dese

Parker says, w hich immediately rub

A number of boys have been in
the habit of swimming along the rail
road track up near the bayou. They
also gobbled car doors to float on;
whenlhey got out into the stream and
the current became too strong they
abandoned the doors and let them
float to St. Louis. For both these of
fences Marshal Murphy had a number
of them arrested yesterday. After a
good lecture by the Mayor, and a sug
