THE HERALD. Hook Muffs Notes. Mr.. Editor : I leie I am again, and 8ii.ee writing you before, the old Mis souri river lias claimed the right of way through a portion of Nebraska soil, and has nearly scooped out what was left of Hock Bluffs river bottom. The river road goinj; south is entirely washed away. And on account of that Wra. It. Kllingtou lost a horse last week, the horse oue night followe l the road too near the end and a large chunk of dirt caved off with him, and he fell into the river; he swam to the Iowa shore, and got mixed in the quicksand, he was got out the next d.iy, but died soon after. We regret to hear of the death of Mis. Murray, wife of Alvers Murray who moved from this place last spring t Kansas; she died recently at their home in that State.' Mr. Jonnigan who was suck Lere all winter with some disease of tha stom ach, went to St. Joseph. Mo. about ix weeks ago to be treated and du-d the next week after fretting there, and au examination after death revealed the fact that he had an ulcerated tumor in the stomach. Cropi in this locMlity differ some from thosj in other pans oi tne coun ty as reported by correspondents, bar ley is light, that is thin and short, wh:it t!i s:iinp. :lik1 mailV DieCPS Of early wheat are very b i lly damage ! by its are thin and short .... ...... r, -i - uln PYfnt :i few nieces and some of those are badly chinch bugged too. lint corn is extra good, and geiung larirrr every day; speaking of corn reminds run nf vnnr correspondent from J'leas- ant Hill, he said "thost who used a check-row planter, were saved the trou bled of cultivating their corn but one way," it is net quite so bad here, for those who usi'd check-rowers here can cultivate both ways, that is, if they have a good hand, and well skilled in the art of hop, skip and jump. And here is how they do it: they commence at one end of the field and drive back and forth, with the off and near horse alternately in the furrow, then with tha agility of a modern democratic congressman to practice the art above mentioned they succeed in cultivating their corn both ways. Harvesting is the order of the day now, and every machine from an old McCormick reaper to a self binding harvester, is pressed into service, and harvest hands are getting from $1.35 to 81.50 per day. Last week we had another ho:se bunt, Mr. Joseph. Campbell who Uvea up Hock Creek a couple of miles, thought his korses had been stolen. b'ut succeeded in finding them south of our town three or four miles. At the present writing our jimson weeds are not doing well, dog-fennel and mustard predominate largely, our streets havo a beautiful yellow look, for the mustard is in full bloom and the fine aroma of tha dog-fennel re minds us of better days. But we still have hopes of our Jimson as they will grow after our early weeds are done frrHtt'lD!. The latest amusing thiBg to read was a poem entitled Bock Bluffs in rhyme, containing twenty verses, and it was written by about a3 many dif ferent persons. It was written with a pencil on a foolscap sheet of paper, It waa left at Allen's blackmith shop, but the writer is a mystery. No harm in the rhyme, but is a sort of bur lesque. Yours to command.
