Just Arrived at Gnthman's,
A large stock f Spring Goods, Dry

Dr. McCrea hands us the follow
ing which was clipped from a Musca
tine paper by his son. It looks as if
th e ga grasshopper were still abroad:
Grasshoppers F. Johnson, who re
sides on the Illinois side of the river,
pposite this city, came to town yester
day, to do his trading in the best mar
ket between St. Louis and St. Paul.
On his way, and when near the bluff
beyond, his attention was called to
myriads of grasshoppers which were
emerging from their winter quarters,
cal'.ed forth perhaps by the genial sun
shine. He gathered an envelope full,
which he exhibited to the astonished
gaze of the curious. Tho "animals''
were about half grown, a fat as fleas
and a3 lively as crickets. The question
naturally priound3 itself, what shall
be done to stay the ravages of these
pestiferous marauders, which threat
ens to be enormous?
I Sensible Word.
We regret to see the indifference
which inany. men of influence and
intelligence here in our midst exhibit
to the habit liquor drinking. It
a vice second to none, it is the cause
of tho greatest proportion of the woes
nnd wrongs of society. Since slavery
has been abolished, intemperance may
be called the sum of all villianies
There is no denial of the terrors which
tho liquor traffic intlicts. Everybody
grants it; ana yet, tnere are so many
who affect to think it a weakness to
mention it. There are men who are
going uown m:i everv day or tlieir
lives, through the" use of Whisky
their friends know and sec it; they
talk about it, and mourn with each
other over the sad prospect; and yet
these same unfortunate men will re
sent any unfriendly allusion to an old
wh.isky bottle, as quick as they wuld
an attack upon the honor of their
homes. Men who are conscious of ev
ery social anu moral dereliction are
blind as bats to the overwhelming evils
of whisky drinking. Everything else
they can eloquently discuss and per
haps denounce, but that vice, they will
support with ITJeir money and iutlu
ence.
It is high time every such man were
calling a halt d asking himself if his
influence in tin., .ta.it er is on the side
of goo'l for the honor and welfare of
his family, friends and society ? It A
the greatest question he can propound,
and takes precedence of politics, rail-
rouds, bri.l 'cs, in f.ict, everything, for
there ii no prosperity that intemper
ance will not poiswn or kill.
This community needs to think of
this matter. Any thoughtful observer
can see the victims of thi3 vice going
down o:.e by one To rescue them, the
friendly influence of every well-mean
ing citiezn should be continually ex
erted. Union.

Dear Plt.lic: At last our friend,
the Watchman, is going to leave us.
Friends and eountrymen if you have
tears to shed, prepare to shed them
now. , . r
For nearly seven ' years wo have
! fought bled and died side by side every
year, and now he's going off to leave
us all alone, to conquer or get "busted."
Although Mr. MacDouagh and our
selves have very often disagreedon lo
cal affairs, public matters, politics, re
ligion, grammar, weary brains, and
numerous other things, we" have
never had one serious personal quar
rel. Although he is known to be good
looking and we are hmely. we have
never called each other "idiot," more
than once or twice, "scoundrel," sel
dom, and "darned fool," never, no nev
er, that is hardly ever. Perhaps two
County papers, so diverse iu every
thing, or different in views and opin
ions never did exist side by side and
have so little unmanly quarrelling.
ah joking aside, we snail be very
sorry to part with Little Mac. Time,
which accustoms us to everything, has
made his presence dear to our heart,
and we hope he may succeed beyond
his most boundless desires in his new
venture. There is one thing we know
ne win uo, wake council Uluiis up

Well, old boy, here's our Jatf"; come
