A proposition has been made in the
French Chamber of Deputies to exchange
the red trousers of the army lor ti.osj of
a darker color. It is urged that red is
yery clearly seen by an enemy, and af
fords a good aim. The objection to the
chango is that red trousers are traditional
with the French army, and associated
with its glory. The answer to this is that
they were adopted only about forty yesrs
ago, in the reign of Louis Phillippe, ar.d
that their traditions arc connected with
but a small proportion of the battles
fought by France.

The MofTet liquor tax system has not
resulted as favorably in Virginia as has
been represented or as was hoped by the
friends of the movement. The official re

This is not such a great improvement
on the old system, after all, but the com

neglect to properly enforce the law, and
the evation of the liquor sellers, which
things Dr. MofTet thinks he can lemedy.
The women of Virginia, more honest
than the men, are endeavoring to avert
the repudiation of the Slate debt. Nat
Utally, they resort to extraordinry meas
ures of finance. Bulls and entertain
ments are commonplace as means of rais
ing revenue. Associations iu various
counties, composed of women member
ship, proposo by self denial to increase
the fund, and now petitions to the Legis
lature are circulating among the women,
praying that an additional- tax may be
levied as a sinking fund, and promising
it shall be saved their husbands, brothers,
and fathers by increased retrenchment on
the part of the petitioners. One woman

offers to sell her husband at auction, and
apply the proceeds to the good cause. "I
can recommend him to purchasers," she
tays, "as a man possessing all the quali

According to the last census of New
York state, 12,650 families are now living
in log cabins. Of other dwellings 508,
031 are built of wood, 03,300 of brick
.ind 18,718 of atone. More than one-half
of all these cost less than $2,000 apiece,
more than one-th.rd less than $1,000, and
7,151 less than $50 each, showing that
any cxtravangance which New Yorkers
may have is not of an architectural or
der. In the county or city of New York,
houses, as may be supposed, have much
more value than in the country, 58,010
houses having cost $5,000 and upward,
mainly upward. Indeed, the dwellings
of the metropolis alone have cost about as
much as the dwellings in all the rest of
the state. Of 1,537,727 productive New
Yorkers, 851,028 aro farmers or farm
hands. Of the working women of the
state, one-half, or 137,410 of them are
home-servants. Over 150,000 men earn
their bread as day lalorers. There are
50,103 clerks, 40,400 tailors and seam
stresses, and 33,470 milliners and dress
makers. Celibacy seems to be in favor
with New Yorkers. There are 2,078,S13
10,1,770,018 married. Widows and widow
c i number 248,778, and divorce 1 people
1,341). During the last census year, in

continued ia a believing and expectant

without any tnswer to my prayer. Before

the blessing I so earnestly desired might

might come while I s.cpt, and that I
might be able to lise and dress myself

he came. I then fell asleep, and slept

We are accustomed to regard the great
trees of California as tho most g:gantic
specimens of vegetable growths known to
man, but such is not the case. There is a
siib-inaiine plant growing in the North
Pacific Ocean, which according to Prof.
Reinsch, dwaifs all others in its vast pro
portions. The MacrocyMis pyrifcra one
of the 2felanorperne, bus been known to
grow to such an extent as to cover vast
areas of tho ocean bed. One specimen,
by measurement, was found to cover three
square miles, and the stem from which
the growth proceeded was eight feet in
diameter. It is almost impossible to con
ceive of such a plant, or how a system of
nourishment can be maintained through
such extended channels, in th living or
ganism. Nature performs strange freaks
and certainly none can be stranger than
the fact that of this gigantic specie there"
arc some specimens so small as to be mi
croscopic, or only to be seen by the aid of
powerful objectives.

have rotted away and been replaced, but
tho oak casks are likely to last forever.

In Paris, many of the wider streets arc
lighted by the electric light, which is in

Eveiy part of the street, the immense

the same time a happy thought came to
the banker. Leaving his clerk to engage
the 6trar.ger, ho ru.-hed out, went up a
flight of back stabs into tho ofliec of tho
only notary in tho town, and, finding that
functionary out, he pocketed tho notarial
seal and walked off. lie then boldly re
fused payment, and the stranger took the
paper out to find a notary and make the
proper protest. No seal, and with this
important attachment to the needed legrd
red t tpe absent, nothing could be done, as
it would require at least a week to com
municate with Indianapolis and replace
the lost seal. So the carpet-bagger am
bled off, and Mr. Wilson availed himself
of the respite to put his atlairs in order."
A Meddlesome Xatnre.
For the credit of human nature, it is to
be hoped that the men who descend from
their proper sphere to meddle with the
domestic duties of the household are few
and far between. The male housekeeper
carries tho common purse, which he holds
wi.h an iron grip, pinching every quarter
that he grudgingly doles out for family
necessaries till the very eagle on it sqti: als,
and his wife feels her d. gradation to the
depths of her soul. Such a man's ' better
half" is an utter nonentity,-with far less
independence of soul and body than the
untutored servant in the kitchen, whose
wages supply her humble needs, and who,
if she i not stisfiffd, can at any time
change her condition. How many wives
of male housekeepers have even one dol
lar a week to spend exactly as they
choose "and no questions asked, "and who
does not know that more genuine satis
faction can be gotten nut of ten cents ab
solutely waited than from ten dollars used
for more ifcccssarics? The male house
keeper always deals with the butcher and
grocer by the week or fortnight, to save
trouble, and 60 always carries that curse
to economy, a grocery book. Thus the
wife is forced to trade at one or two par
ticular stores, and if they have not the ar
ticles required, she must do without them.
IJow infinitely ' I etter to set aside a cer
tain amount, be it ever so small, accord
ing to the salary of the head of the fami
ly, for household expenses, and let the
wife manage it her own way. Ninety
nine times out of a hundred she will
make it go farther than a man can. Then
no more pinching, contriving and cajol
ing: no more "books" at butchers and
grocers, where one is continually in debt,
often purchasing what one cannot afford,
sometimes paying for more than one gets,
and taking up with an inferior article
when better could be bought in the mar
ket for less money if one only had cash in
hand. A wife bears her full share of the
common burden by daily cares and
thoughtful management for the comfort
of the family, and is entitled to her share
of the common fund, which division
6hould be ju6t as cheerfully rendered by
tho heod of " the firm as with any other
partner.
