Weckbach has got thirty three car loads of lumber coming right along now and his corner begins to look like a real lumber ranche. There was an accident up at John Tutt's house on Tuesday last and John couldn't be at the oflice. There was a real "Fiat" baby there. L. P. McLarren, once known in this town a short time leaves Malvern and goes to Elk Point, D. T., to run a Republican paper there. If you want to find out just how big your mouth is go to Dr. Itichey and have him put that rubber rub ber thing in your mouth. Some of the younger members of our community are talkinj'of forming a Scientific Society this fall and win ter: that is for studying the Sciences, riot to expound wisdom and make the ories. A few have expressed a desire to form a scientific society that can meet and devote time to the study of science in its different phases; we do not im agine aught but success would attend the effort. Watchman. Plattsmouth, Aug. 27. The compliments of Mrs. McMaken, to Mr. & Mrs. MacMurphy: These apples were raised inside the city limits. Can the county produce any better for the size and age of trees. Mrs. II. C. McMakex. We received the above, accompanied by a basket of as handsome apples as any we have yet been the recipients of although of a different variety. Mrs. M. does not mention the age of the trees, but they certainly must be most vigorous and healthy ones. The only thing that bothers us about Brown, the mind leader, is that the Plattsuouth Scientific Society were not there to swap theories with Mr. Brown. We missed Professor Mc Donagh sadly; and Deacon Bushnell ought to have had a say in it. Dr. Richey has what he calls a " Rubber Dam" which he puts in poor people's mouth's to prevent the Saliva from flowing into the orifice he wants to fill. It is an excellent invention, but there's acres of people here that want to reverse the order of those words rubber-dam. Phil Young informs us that he has just received a full line of School Books, Slates, crayons. Inks, Pens and a large assortment of Paper, which he has bought for cash in Chicago, and therefore is enabled to give his custo mers very low prices at wholesale or retail. Giv him a trial. Judge Sullivan had a case of as sault and battery before him yesterday afternoon. Wm. McKimball was ar rested on the charge of his wife, she complaining that he had beaten her and she was in fear of her life. The prisoner was required to give a bond of 100 to keep the peace or go to jail. Both parties were to blame, they are both bad'eharae'ers. Young Mr. Blackburn, the Libra rian of the Reading Room, now, is very faithful in attendance and keens everything neat about the place. Du ring the hot weather no one could be asked to stay there hardly, but as the cooler weather approaches we sincere ly hope our belter class of citizens will make it a point to patronize the room, and endeavor to make it a pleasant and p 'ltnaiient .institution. How would it do to call a public meeting on Saturday afternoon, at 2 p. m., to see how many of our public spir ited citizens will give aid to our south ern brethren now suffering from the plague of yellow fever. It should be remembered that during our grasshop per raid the Patrons of Husbandry in the southern states contributed most liberally to relieve our distress. And at the same time the propriety of rais ing a fund by subscription for the pur pose of putting our streets, at least Main street, and those seen most by strangers, in Ehape, should be discussed and a plan adopted. Prof. Drummond left us last week for his new field of Labor at Fremont and the Herald never fou::d it out in time to give him a good send off. But his many friends did, in a picnic down at Hessers, and afterwards as he departed on the train. The Herald as well as his other friends wishes him good fortune wherever he goes. The Fremont Tribune has the following: Prof. W. W. Drummond is wry much gratified at the reception he lias received at the hands of the School Board and citizens generally. The Board have expressed a willingness to co-operate with him in all of his plans for the good of the schools. Dr. W. S. Richey, Dentist, of Chi cago, whose card announcing that he would visit Plattsmouth has appeared in the Herald for several weeks past, completed his engagement here this morning, having remained sometime longer than he at first announced, ow ing to the amount of work which crowded in upon him. So far as we have heard Dr. Richey has given per fect satisfaction, and he has filled some alarming cavities, drawn some tremen dous teeth and fitted a good many toothless mouths to mouthless teeth, as his many patients can testify, and what's more he is patient with the sensitive ones, and equally skillful and kind with all. The Doctor's good work and good ways recommend him, and that is the best recommendation. Mr. Hobson writes us the follow ing: A sad accident ocurred at Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday of last week. Milton Bates, a little boy of 9 years, son of J. II. Bates, while clambering over a threshing machine, his father and the writer of this were repairing, fell and broke his left arm, about half way between t lie wrist and elbow. Dr. Wallace, of Factoj yville, was called in and the arm was set in good shape and all seemed to be well until Thursday evening, when mortification set in. ; Dr. Wallace was again sent for. who, ! after working with it a while, sent to Nebraska City for Dr.Larsh. who came about one o'clock next day. By this time it was plain to be seen that the limb must come off. This operation ! occupied about twenty minute3. Both bones were broken, and the main arte ry ruptured. It was a trying affair for all, but the boy seemed to bear it like a hero, and is now getting along all right, and will soon, we hope, be well. We went out with Mr. Thomas, the brown horses and others to witness the trial of a new direct draft mower, called the Eureka, last week. It cuts a 6. 8, or 10 foot swath, though the 6 and 8 foot are the most used. The one we saw was a 6 foot one. It certainly doe3 the work astonishingly easy. Two very light horses pulled it for an hour, then one horse was unhooked and the other drew it across the field; then both horses were taken off, and two men pulled it some distance while cut ting, and still the man that run it was not happy, but took off the two men and hooked himself up alone, and ran it a ways. One of the tests was Elam Parmele pulling against a horse, and we thought the machine worked first rate then. Really and honestly it does wonderful work, and is going to revolutionize the mowing business. This might have happened here: He was a young man of a scientific turn of mind, and it was his first night out with a new girl. He remarked, as he cast his eyes heavenward and re ferred to the glory of the skies: "Such stupendous wonders are entirely in comprehensible; one becomes wrapped in feelings of admiration coupled with awe, giving one a sensation of spiritu al elevation, a transmoerification of earthly desires" "It must be the fumes of the furnace," broke in the young lady "they often affect me in the same way. Wright's pills are good for the complaint." She was all sym pathy the remainder of the walk, while he relapsed into a gloomy silence, and Laide her good n'ght at the gate with out an attempt to renew the conversa tion. -Candid Admission: The chairman of the republican central committee, and, therefore the boss republican of the county says in his last week's man ifesto: Personal politics has nearly ruined the (republican) party in this county and in this state. Instead of the wel fare of the masses being looked after, and the good of the party, it has been tne personal fortunes of individuals. Watchman. Its true, but we have to laugh at that " bo a Republican" business. The facts are that if there was any thing that the chairman advised a cer tain set invariably opposed. This wonderful chairmanship that worried Connor so, and that the boys were "go ing to take away from us" has never been anything but a hindrance. There was never a dollar raised to help pay any expenses, it might entail and it often hampered our political action, besides making us responsible to tho people, apparently, for many things we did not approve and had no hand in setting up. It occurs to us that it would be a good idea for the City Council to pass a law' obligating some of the property holders of the city to take a little trip away from home, which might open their eyes somewhat to the ragged con dition of the dress of Plattsmouth streets. It may do very well to talk about tlu newspaper keeping quiet and say nothing about how dilapidated our sidewalks are, and what condition our roads are in, for fear the outside world may hear of it, but strangers do occasionally come to town; and their first remarks always are: "What side walks! I should think you would break your necks! What sori of city authorities have you got? and what kind of citizens? that are contented to let the hogs and cattle, and horses roam at their sweet will; the weeds crow unmolested, and the boards of the s'dewalks lay hither and yon, with many a gap to catch even the wary and careful. Have they settled down con t?nted to the dilapidation, and don't know that other towns are going far ahead of this, which is getting notori ous for it's illy-kept streets?" We guess that's what's the matter! Start some of the citizens away and let them have a glimpse of a good side walk, once. My Dear Mayor: Excuse us, but the wife wrote this just after tearing six yards of skirt braid and part of her best gown to pieces, and we thought it was too good to throw out. Ed.
