aged 76 years, one month and one eck.
We learn that Mrs. Chapman was
visiting here with her son, and on the
morning of the 4th inst. was taken
with a severe congestive chill. All
that could be done for her by medical
skill, nursing and care M as done, but
seventv-six years of life, the greater
part spent in the "far west," raising
and caring for a large family, so com
pletely wore her out that she was una
ble to recover from the severe shock
sustained occasioned by her chill.
Below we give a sketch of this old
mother from the pen of her son, John
TV. Chapman, of the Council Bluffs
Nonpareil, which portrays her noble
traits of character in a tender and
touching manner. Her son here in
Plattsmouth informs us that in 1814.
when he was buc an infant, his father
and mother removed from Indiana Co.
Penn and to the then Territory of
. .... ,. . '
Iowa, settling near Burlington, where
they reared and educated their chil-j
dren. Her two daughters, Mrs. Wat
son of Des Moines Co.," Iowa, and Mrs.
Barclay of Saunders Co., Nebraska,
were both with her during this kir.t
sickness, ministering to her wants.
From the Nonpareil
The subject of this sketch was ripe
in all the experiences of hope, joy, toil
and sorrow, for she had phased by sev
eral years, the alio ted three score and
ten. She was born on the 7th day of
March, 1802, in Ligonier Valley, West
moreland county, Pennsylvania. Her
father, Judge Thomas Pollock, was
somewhat .rominent in the earlier
history of that state having served on
the b.'nch for more than a quarter of a
century. He was a true blue Scotch
Presl yteriar. and reared his family af
ter the faith of aj Calvanist of the
strictest sect. His daughter whose de
mise we here chronicle, espoused with
equal zeal the faith and belief of her
father, and her five sons and two daugh
ters were taught the catechism with a
fidelity that could and perhaps would
have endured persecution rather than
shrink from a purpose or fail in the
accomplishment of a duty, that was as
clearly to her a duty, as was temporal
or physical existence a fact. But of her
character we care to speak more tha't
of her particular belief or pecular dog
mas. :is they might seem to some who
may happen to read. She was self-sacrificing
in her devotion to the interests
and care of her children from our ear
liest recollection. She could be, and
often was, sick nigh unto a surrender
of life, without uttering a complaint
lest the pain it would impart to her
children and friends would intensify
her own suffering by reason of their
anxiety.
Her "interest in the poor was notable
and unabating; her acts of charity
were more numerous than her limited
means were abundant, and the reason
she took less interest in the gains of
the opulent and the successes and pro
motions of the ambitious, was because
her mind was turned in pity to the
disappointed and because more of her
time was occupied in sympathy for
the poor and hungry. Of such a char
acter we write and for the loss of such
a mother we mourn. She is safe now,
however, and when we pass " over
there" where she has gone so recently,
we hope to renew the clasping of
hands that were relaxed at the bidding
of the arch monster death, as she was
drawn from us, whispering back with
palsied tongu and imperfect articula
tion snm great truth that can be re
vealed only in the mystic future. Peace
to her ashes, and forever blessed be
her memory.

"German Syrup.
No other medicine in the world has
ever given such a test of its curative
qualities as Boschee's Geiuian Syrup.
In two years three million four hundred
thousand small bottles of this medicine
were distributed fne of charge by
Druggists in this country to those af
flicted with Consumption, Asthma,
Croup, severe Coughs, Pneumonia, and
other disease of the Throat and Lungs,
giving the American people undeniable
proof that German Syrup will cure
them. The result has been that Drug
gists in every town and village in the
United States are recommending it to
their customers. Go to your Druggist,
and ask what they know about it. Sam
ple bottles 10 cents. Begular size 75
cents. Three doses will relieve any
