The veto of the President on the Sil ver Hill is becoming more and more unpopular. Ve have yet to see the first paper that unqualifiedly endorses it. Omaha is making a strong effort for one of the new - IT. S. Mints, to bo or dered by the Government. We hope she may be successful, as Omaha is undoubtedly the best and most conve nient point for the location of such an institution. The Silver bill works better and bet ter every day. At Stuart's store in New York last week they made change in Gold. The days of gold gambling in Wall St., are fast being numbered and the money there hoarded will and must seek investment elsewhere, in laudable and useful industries, to the benefit of the whole country. Wt learn from the Omaha Journal of Commerce that the Great Western Mining Company has been formed, and that part of their business is to mine coal in Cass county, at "Jonrs Landing" 12 miles below riattsmouth. (near the old Van Horn place we judge), and that they expect great results there from. We hope they may succeed ful ly in their endeavors for the good of eastern Nebraska. The Supreme Court of Louisiana de cided that Gen. Anderson should be re leased as there was no evidence to show that any forgery of the records had been made, the returns, even if al tered as claimed, would not have changed the result, neither was there evidence showing that Anderson knew altertious were being made. So falls to the ground another great Democratic sensation. We learn from our county corres pondence that Mr. II. I). Kellogg was a severe loser by fire on the 15th inst. His stables, granary, with seed grain, a valuable span of young mules, two sets of double harness and many other things usually laid away in such places were completely burned up; also a horse he had hired of a neighbor' was badly damaged. Spring has made its an nual visit and is making business live ly as usual, that is the farming commu nity". Farmers arc busy plowing and sowing wheat, they are pretty near done seeding, and have begun to pre pare the soil for the corn crop, which will be, without doubt, very large, there -will be considerable mora acreage of wheat this year than hist. Every foot of land that can be got will be under cultivation. The prospects ' for fruit are exceedingly good if Jack Frost don't return J'-nd nip it in the bud, which he will be likely to do. Boynton reached Lisbon last month, after a very long voyage on the Tagus. Between Toledo and the capi tol he shot thirty-one cascades on the non-navigable partsof the river. The current carried him at times more than thirty miles an hour. : He arrived in good health, and very little bruised. We wish Capt. Boynton would come out here and try the old: Muddy once more. Herald: In respect to im provements going on throughout the city and in its suburbs in the way of building, including residence and busi-, ness houses, Lincoln without a doubt takes the lead of any of her sister cit ies in the State, not excepting Omaha, Houses spring up as if by magic, and a new house has a contagious effect here in that where one appears, others fol low. Fully one hundred and fifty buildings in process of erection or ap proaching completion can be seen in a two hours walk. The disputed eighty which has been the subject of so much litigation, has at last been decided within the cilv limits, and already quite a number of residences have been erected thereon; report has it that sev eral of the Professors of the Universi ty intend building residences on it this spring. The work of the U. S. Post OtTice is being pushed rapidly forward by the en( rgetic contractor, Mr. Smith, but it will be impossible to complete it en tirely before next spring. It is cur rently reported that the Artesian Well which is situated in the centre of the square has been leased by several of Lincoln's most prominent men. with a view of erecting bath houses, etc., as the ingredients of which the water is composed are considered by the lead ing physicians to be of great medical power. Lincoln is one of .the few cities in Nebraska that is visited by the lead ing traveling . troupes and lecturers. Among the noted lecturers that she has been favored with are Wendell Phil lips (often called silver-tongued Phil lips), E. B. Washburn, ex-Minister to France, Gen. Kilpatrick, and others. She has also been visited by the noted singers, the "Ilyers Sisters," who are universal favorites. Clara Louise Kel Lgg's traveling agent came here for the purpose of perfecting an engage ment with the managers of the Opera House, but her figures being 81750.00 for one night's performance no engage ment was made. The Contrabandista Company from Omaha, under the supervision of Miss L. A. Rogers, paid us a visit on Tues day last. March 5th, and in the even ing played before one of the most cul tured and intelligent audiences ever gathered in Lincoln. The various char acters without an exception were fault lessly rendered, and was received and appreciated by the elite of the city, as was shown by several of the members being encored: as an amateur company it has few if any equals, and is indeed much superior to many of the profes sional troupes. The Lincoln Dramatic Company have given three performances in tie Opera House, which have been well received by the citizens, and have been spoken very highly of by Lincoln's Journals. The State University is progressing finely, and constantly advancing to wards perfection. On Friday, March 1st, 12 students were suspended for failing to appear at Rhetoi icals, with the understanding that as soon as the delinquent exercises were made up they would be allowed to re-enter. I will further state that ten out of the twelve handed in the required exercis es, and were allowed to occupy their old positions in their classes on the fol lowing Monday morning. Prof. Bailey of the State University has gone to the Republican Valley for the purpose of perfecting arrangements for the 'Summer School of Science," which will leave Red Cloud. Neb. on July 5th, and explore the Republican Va'ley, which is an excellent field for study on account of its geological de posits and fossiliferons rocks; many Professors and students from the cast will accompany them. The military boys have had quite a rest for the past two months, not be ing required todrill, but thetime diaws near (vhih is being looked forward to with a great deal of pleasure) to begin again.:. By a recent order of the Board of Regents every male member attend ing the University is compelled to drill so that at least there will be GO or 75 in the military department next term. Through the efforts of Lieat. Dudley 1.000 blank and 1.000 ball cartridges have been secured for the cadets, from L. S. Ordnance Department. An acquaintance of mine who witnessed this, and was not quite able to convince himself that the 'Limes and Daily News had so very much misrepresented matters to him, remonstrated with the manager of the place upon this deviation from history. Tlie bride and groom were accompa nied by Miss Lyon as bridesmaid and Mr. H.iyden as groomsman, bhort ser vices were held as usual, and after the ceremony the happy couple, made one, returned to the houso of Mr. Cannon Mrs. Cannon being the mother of the bride. - The next day, Monday, a wed ding dinner was given at the home ot the groom.
