As an example of the benefit of
advertising, we may state that Peter
Bates advertised his House and lots
for sale or rent in this paper and had
more applicants than he could answer;
also, we advertised a farm for sale
near Weeping Water, and had appli

induces us to follow our friend from
Weeping Waters suggestion that we
start a real Estate office.

Ur Master Willard Wise, son of Mr.
Jonathan Wise, concluded last week
that going to school as his mother bade
him was not at all the thing and so in
stead he went off to seek his fortunes
in a more agreeable way via the 13. &
M. to Omaha, Arrived there he did
not find that his intended destination,
the Barracks, was so easy for a small
boy to find alone as when accompanied
by some older and more knowing
head to pilot the way, so tak n in
charge by a policeman, he spent the
night in the Emigrant House, and re
turned with his father, who had gone
up for him on the early train, a sad
der and wiser boy, who had learned
that school after all wasn't the worst
place in the world, by any means, and
that on the high roads of travel, for
tunes and barracks didn't always ap
pear at command.

Letter From Louisville.
Louisville, Neb., Feb. 16, 78.
Ed. Herald: Whereas, the Chron
icle has left us, something which we
regret of course, we must have a hear
ing, and inasmuch as the Herald is
the oldest in the business, we think age
before beauty, and so it comes about
that Louisville is represented in the
Herald this week, not that we hold
any ill feeling against the Chronicle
man r the paper, for if by moving to
Plattsmoutli he has bettered his finan
cial condition, well and good; for we
fully believe that of all institutions by
which to get rich, a county newspaper
is the poorest, and if, in it's new garb
the Chronicle can have an influence on
the evil of intemperance, we say, to its
advent at Plattsmouth, "Amen." We
wish it all the luck in store for it how
can we do otherwise. We can say lit
tle of the temperance cause in this
place, as yet. If those who are advanc
ing the cause, shun this place because
of its intemperate atmosphere, then
they are shirking their duty. We trust
we will be able to report progress in
in the future however and we say to
the workers in the cause, "Do not pass
us by.".
The propects for a cUurob building
in this place are indeed fluttering, work
will be commenced next month, oyer
eight hundred dollars have bggn, sub
scribed, RerJH, F, PiSeiiliackef has
just closed a series, of protracted weet
ings, and wet with 6Hfdesgquit a
number are to unHa with th ChHfgh
soon, We are glad n qt hearts. t
note the upward growth of Zion in our
place. Let the good work go on.
Fox & Glover are here still, although
they sustained a heavy loss. There is
a building on the same gronnd and
nearly as full of goods as ever. They
have dissolved partnership however
Mr. Glover keeping the store and Mr.'
Fox, buying grain and dealing in coal.
Since the Chronicle has left us there
is strong talk of fixing up a telephone
system from house to house through
out the town, as a substitute. We
think it very practical, and just like
the people of L. you know, for they
are never behind in improvements.
M. Carroll our worthy station fore
man of the B. & M- starts for New
York next week to visit his brother.
Mr. Toman, the R. R. agent, is again
at his post, dispatching business the
same as ever, and says he finds the loss
of his eye no hinderance whatever to
business which is indeed, a great sat
isfaction. Mr. Toman has a great
many sympathizing friends in this part
of the country.

Correspondence.
Jno. A. Mac-Murphy,
Dear Sir: Having inade Neb. my
home the greater portion of seventeen
years past, and feeling identified with
her interests, it gives me pleasure as
opportunity offers to note the marks of
progress and development of our fine
State.
In my present employment, it is
mine to travel as directed, in Illinois,
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska
and elsewhere, and though not a pracjj
tical farmer, I am an observer of the
interests of this important occupation.
I now embrace the privilege of visi
ting and remaining a brief time in
some eighteen of our most important
counties in Nebraska during which
time I may anon give j'ou a few items
of general interest.
In the four first states above their
cittizen3 have it is true many inter
ests of which they may justly be proud,
but none of those states can boast of
as fertile soil, fine roads and such agri
cultural aJvantages as we can here.
We occasionally meet in those states a
man who has tried Neb. under our
chief misfortune, the grasshoppers
invasion, and who from his own limi
ted means, and lack of nerve has " gone
back on us." It is also true, the above
invasions have adveitised against us
yet it is, pleasure to note the fact, that
our State is well known abroad in her
true greatness. Every one seems to
know that we have inducements not
found in any other state, and many are
disposing of their homes to settle here.
They speak in particular of our choice
and great variety of fruits, and cereals
so prominently set forth in our Nation
al records.
Generally speaking Neb. cattle swine
and poultry are forty per cent super!
or to those in above states. Not to
overlook or spaak disparingly of our
horses, will say, time will improve us
in this direction.
In Sept. last when we heard Gov.
Wade Hampton of Carolina eulogise
the products of Iliiuo's at Rock ford
and at her Stale Fair, Freport, we
loudly wished Neb. had condescended
to exhibit ther.
But to icturn to Cass, the finest
county in Neb for agriculture, we can
not wilhold the commendation due her
sanguine farmers. We note steady and
important development, met not only
in the eastern but in the western por
tions of the county. Fine groves, or
chards and barns adorn the rich land
scape in every direction. Immense
cribs of corn on nearly every farm
Some so large that their boundaries
reach the North and South Poles, and
from Earth to Heaven. When a man
in Greenwood Precinct told us he har
vested 310 bushels of choice oats from
10 bushels of seed, we would have turn
ed " Thomas," but for the fact that he
scattered our doubts.
A gentleman from Indiana recently
invested $3,300 in a farm in Iowa but
fearing he stopped too soon, came on
to see Neb. and told some in above pre
cinct he would take 62.000 for his
place in order to settle here. He'll find
no takers in Nebraska.
We incline to the opinion that Neb.
will this year receive a larger emigra
tion than any previous year, as they
are now thronging Omaha and other
poiuts.
I notice your paper in nearly every
business and private house, from wbi h
fact I conclude the people are tryiug
to keep the Editor alive, else he is trjr
ing to keep the people alive. Which?
Wishing to criticise ye Editor and
pitying him for being one, please find
enclosed $2 for the "Herald" for
twelve months or a year as you choose.
Finding myself in the float," you may
address it Plattsmouth and as Capt.
J. W. has to know wheie everybody is,
he will know where to forward it to.
