the great contrasts between School
Books used by the fathers and mothers
of the land, when young, and those
now used by the children, is the use of
pictures. As a curious instance of il
lustrating the meaning of words by
pictures, look at the three of a Ship on
page 1751 of Webster's "Unabridged
Dictionary. these alone illustrate the
meaning of more than one hundred
words and terms far better than they
can be defined by any description in
words.

Emery Storrs tells a rather good
story on himself. A farmer who had
a claim against some person, hav
ing heard much of Storrs, was deter
mined upon employing t he well known
ia .vytr. . lie presented his case, and its
trival nature prompted Storrs to advise
the farmer to employ a oung attorn
ey. "Xii! 1 want .u don't care what
it costs." "I charge lather ht;avy fee.-,,"
.-aid Emery, t-milingly. "I intend t;
have j on, just t lie .same. I am willing
io sp- nd consider. th e on this, :uid will
eiiuae nobody but you if it costs me
.?.".)." Explanation ensued, and the
former went out uijcumiiled.
Thats what Morrison told Il.-.ines in
hi.s famous Bohemian cace. The Judge
wanitcl to retain Moirison but our
young legal friend said his fees were
always SiOJ in advance. II nine's said
he could hire a do.eu common lawyers
for that and in the multitude of coun
selors there was safety. He then

If your lemjierance friends treat
you as generously and as honestly as
they have the Herald you can no
doubt, buy out the U. I. R R or the

of sujiport; if ever you get short you

A very peculiar case was tried Mon
day evening before Judge Found. A
Bohemian was arrested last summer it
seems for beating his wife, and brought
before Justice Haines, who in default
of bail, sentenced him to jail, and he
has been there ever since.
The case was a rich one, as the de
fendant set up jealousy of the Hon.
Justice as the cause of his demonstra
tions towards his wife, and the exact
amount of jealousy or the legal sum of
cause for jealousy thai, would warrant
a husband iu knocking down his wife,
seemed very difficult for the Lawyers
to decide.
The point we desire to notice is that
it is a shame for any man to lay in
that jail for any crime. It is an out
rage, and as has been justly said, it the
man had any friends or any money he
could prosecute the county. We think
Judge Found would be justified in sen
tencing a prisoner to any other jail iii
his District, this being unfit, and let
Cass County fuot the bills, until a de
cent jail is provided.
It is often asked why the jail is
worse now than years ago; because it
is getting" older all the time and our
climate has changed so rapidly of late
years, the rainfall having more than
doubled, that any underground habita
tion now, is unhealthy in the extreme,
oven though a few years ago it might
be called habitable.-

Fremont, Feb. o'd, 1373.
Ed. Herald: Per agreement, I will
drop a few lines.- The piincijial ob
ject of interest here'is the Si Louis
tiial, every body is talking of it and
nearly everybody is in favor of con
viction, but the jury are mordiy of foi
eign birth, only one being native born,
aud with such a jury any thing could be
expected. As Lam notacitizeuldonot
express my opinion. To hear the conver
sation, no matter where j ou stop, one
would think that he had dropped into
a medical school, you hear of nothing
but gastroenteritis, colon, duodenum,
:liom, cadaver, pus, chyle, exudations,
iliac and other names, that give quite a
medical air to the sober steady going
Fremonters. The examination of wit
nesses closed yesterday afternoon and
Mr. W. A. Marlow made the first j-lea
for the prosecution. We have had
good sleighing for three days; it is now
cut uj in the streets but it is quite
good a little ways out of the city. Any
one can see that the increased prosjier
ity of Wahoo has affected Fremont, but
if it were possible to get a new bridge
across the Platte, business would re
vive. It would need something power
ful to revive the old vigor. It seems
to be the fate of all western towns that
when the decline commences, nothing
short of earthquake can rouse them. As
I am out here but a short time 1 can
not bo expected to look on the rosv
side of everything. I still look through
the green gtlasseof an eastern man.
