We shall giye extended notice next week, and in the meantime any one wishing to subscribe for Vicks Il lustrated Monthly Magazine can do so here. While urging on the readers of the IIf.rai.o the importance of wool grow ing and dairying for Nebraska in the future, we are reminded that our friend, Sam Thomas, has been running a fair dairy establishment for some time now, and has made it quite successful. He proceeds on the regular creamery plan, deep pans, milks Devon cows and grades and has made 2,000 pounds of butter thi3 year, which found a ready sale. -As some books have already been of fered towards forming a Library it has been suggested that such persons as may have books or magazines that they are willing to donate to a public Library, had better see Mr. Pollock, chairman of Cora, on Heading Room, and state what the- are willing to do. Suitable furniture, chairs &.c, would not be amiss as offerings and we will thus husband our cash for such books and other necessaries as cannot be ob tained without the cash. The IIekald has a good joke on Dob Maxwell, and on our printers too. You have all heard of the "Intelligent Compositor" who inhabits every Xews paper office. Well, Bob and our I. C. together, did this. Maxwell sent us up a legal notice to print which was supposed to set out in the usual style as follows: "Defendant will take notice tl at plaintiff has com menced suit before A. Carmichnel, a justice of the peace in Cass County," Sec when the proof came in it read:; "Defendant will take notice that plaint iff has commenced suit before a connu bial justice of the peace in Cass Coun ty, & c," on examining Dob's copy it was hard to make, out which word, the letters stood fur. Considering his reeent marriage, we. let the boy olT, and our I.C. still nourishes. A Good Templar's Lodge was or ganized in this city last evening, with 70 ladies and gentlemen initiated, and there are about a3 many more names as applicants for future initiation. As we are just ready for press, we can't give list of officers &c, at this time. MacDoxaoii having exhausted the Grammar falls back on the Dictionary unabridged, for words to get at Mr. Finch with. The Ladies at the Tied Ribbon Hall New Years day, gve refresh ments to 455 gentlemen and 3fi2 ladies 817 in all and in the evening the Hall was so crowded that serious fears were entertained for the safety of the floors. It was a very happy way to sper.d New Years and no doubt paved many a lad from the periodical head-ache of next dav after a holiday. Mr. Lewellyn Moore, has been mak ing extensive additions to his Green house, nearly doubling its capacity, and also adding a work shop so that everything may be kept neat and clean about the green house rooms. He tells us he is working up quite a trade in "cut flowers" in Omaha and elsewhere. We are pleased to hear of these good tidings, for Mr. Moore deserves great praise for the perseverance and energy he has displayed in this line of busi ness. Kob Wilburn's folks came near having a serious catastrophe at their house last week. Dy some means mix vomica (a preparation containing styrchninej had been left standing on the table in one of the rooms and a little toddler, just able to crawl up on a chair, did so and from thence to the table when he took a sip from the mix i bottle and in a few moments was in spasms. Dr. Schildknecht was sent for and hurried out there just in time to save the child. The Doctor stayed all night with him however, and it was a very close shave. A Temple of Honor was formed hre last week with CO members. Among those who joined were D. II. Wheeler, Sam M. Chapman, Alex Schlegel, S. S Ilinkle, William II Raker, Edward Kennedy. W S Blackburn, M B Cutler, James Morrison, J M Woodson, J P Young. Edward F Rees.Dr G II Black, Geo E Dovey, Robert Donnelly, P Hicks, Geo W Kinsey, P P (lass, Wil liam Stone, William S Wise. John S Duke, Thos Pol lock, E B Lewis, C Mahony, W L Wells The following Templars were elected and installed as officers of Plattsmouth Temple of Honor, Xo. 15. Daniel II Wheeler, Worthy Chief Templar; Win Agnew, Worthy Vice Tmphtr; George E Horsey. Worthy ltecoider; Win II B iker, Worthy As sistant Recorder; J A Conner. Worthy Financial Recorder; This Pollock. Worthy Treasurer; E I) Stone, Worthy Csher;J E Morrison, Worthy Assistant Usher ;B W Black, Guardian; L Davis, Sentinel. After the organization speeches were made by Chapman. Wheeler ami others and I lie new edifice of honor seems fair to rise to great proportions here. QriTi: a number of persons have of fered to bring us corn or oats when we did not need them, now we will take some glad' j' on Subscription. 4 ltl It is not known to ever one that Mr. John Shannon is the agent here for the Shenandoah Xukskkies, Iowa; but he is, and has been receiv ing ail the time some choice and i are shrubbery, trees. Sec. If any one wants to s'e just what these Nurseries are and what they can do, let them call on John Shannon, and go over to his lot and see what preparations he is making for the Spring trade. John is very en thusiastic on trees, shrubs, plants; and it will do you good to get him talking n them. While the IIekald most sincerely hopes the new order of things in re gard to Temperance (real temperance) may continue and be permanent, and that the reading room and Library may prove a success, and a lasting in stitution to the credit of the town and the improvement of the morals and manners of the rising generation, we cannot forbear this just criticism to our for the time excessively enthusiastic friends in the cause of moral and men tal reform. If each and every one of these ar dent workers, had done their whole duty in the years gone by, if the men had put their hands down in their pockets long ago and the women had gathered together and worked and in sisted on some place other than the Saloon being provided for our youth and grown men, it could and would have been done 'ere this and no need of Mr Finch's desperate appeals. If each and every man of good moral habits and right thought had boldly and braveiy performed his whole duty as a citizen, and inarched up to the polls year after year and voted in the interest of growth and prosperity to the town and the people, and not only voted, but stayed there and worked, and given the power of his influence to the surroundings of the polls there would be no need of a stampede now, to inaugurate a reform. The Masonic Lodge inculcates temperance in ev ery obligation, lecture and precept. T.e whole body of Christians talk it. and the preachers preach it and have preached it, lo! these many years; it is a sad commentary on theproneness of mankind to neglect their ordinary every day duties until some great acci dent, some startling wonder wakes them up to their long neglected duty ) 1 The Herald has many times and oft. ( asked'you to form Library and Improve ment associations, your ministers have no doubt exhorted you weekly to tem perance and all good works, we have both helped you in good days and in bad days, stayed with you in- health and in sickness in short borne all the j burdens of life with you for years ad it is small encouragement to us, to feel that in one short week, for an entire stranger, a traveling Lecturer, here to day and off to-morrow you will raise money, join hands, and work as you never worked before, for the love the good of or the advice of old friends, 3IARRIKI). Harry Bartle's fun loving face ap pears on our streets. Mrs. O'Grady is spending a portion of the holidays in Plattsmouth. Mr. Marti ndale, our Xew County Superintendent, called to see us yester day. E. A. Kirkpatrick and family, spent Xew Years in Plattsmouth, with their relatives and friends. Mrs. Elbert Duke came down from Omaha for a short visit, and to help re ceive Xew Year's calls. Mrs. French makes flying -trips to Plattsmouth, but does not fly over the road from the Barracks to Omaha. Mr. J. Q. Goss and wife of Bellevue, spent Xew Years day in Plattsmouth, the guests of Rev. and Mrs. Burgess. Miss Laura Morse spent a few days with friends in Plattsmouth, and was warmly greeted by a number of her old pupils. Cap't Paine and wife were down to see us on St. Johns day, and attended the Masonic Ball. They both look splendid and seem very happy in their new Lincoln home. J. W. Barnes Esq'r a staunch friend of the Herald, we believe, called to see us the day after X'ew Years and well, as John wears a red ribbon you may all rest assured we spent none of the money for beer. Mr. A. O. Ashley, who will be our next Deputy Sheriff, is now living among us and the Herald had the pleasure of an introduction to him the other day. Besides this Mr. A. is a good carriage Painter and probably will open a shop here. "Gad", The Champion traveling man of the Journal was in town X'ew Years. He went down to the Lady's Red Ribbon rooms for dinner, and there was such a Slaughter there im mediately, that a wagon had to be sent out for more provisions to last the day through. Frank Stader, of Lincoln, now, is down to see us during the Holidays. "Professor," they call him in Lincoln, and we must say the professor looks well kept, and in good heart. He has a line room in the University building, twelve students and all the portrait work he can do. On:; ne Mi' Olio' One; One One!
