Judge Despain, one of the Justices
of the Peace of this precinct died at
his residence on Saturday morning the
22, of Cystitis. Mr. Despain had been
elected two or three times to the posi
tion of Police Judge or Justice of the
Peace, was one of the oldest settlers here
and much respected by all parties. His
sudden taking off will be felt deeply
by his friends and relatives. He leaves a
largo family to mourn his decease.
"Who ever saw such a Winter! well
may a Chicago paper say "Is it a slice
of unripe spring, or a chunk of old
fall left to die. Christmas and no fires
necessary, Furs abandoned, frost un
known, the hens all cackling and the
grass all green. Did "Venus" kick
op the bobbery the other night, was

all the frost out of mother earth, or
what's the matter? Arise! oh ye sci

Mr. Finch, the Temperance Lec
turer, really came among us Saturday
evening, last, and has been speaking
since.
His lecture last evening was to men
especially; on the cost of drinking hab
its, and asks the square question, "Can
you afford to do it?"
Over 400 have signed the pledge and
received a lied Ribbon, very many of
them of the youth of the town. Mr.
Finch will stay here until Monday
evening next, and on Saturday and
Sunday evenings will probably speak
in Fitzgerald Hall, the M. E. Church
being too small for the crowds that at
tend his lectures. He is "from Court
land, N. Y. State, runs a paper when
home, the Investigator, the organ of
the Grand Lodge of good Templars of
the state and has also been general
managing agent and Lecturer of the
State. He is a slightly built, rather
tall pale gentleman with side whiskers,
and is a very good off hand speaker. It
is expected ho will roll the 400 up to
1400 before heJcaves.
We send out to our Subscribers a
Christmas greeting with this issue of
the IIeuald. We certainly hope that
it may be a merry Christmas and a
happy New Year to all. In many re
spects Nebraska has great reason to re
joice; looking back but a few short
months and we all can remember the
gloomy prospect thought to be ahead.
The red locust swarmed over the land,
several years of low prices and bad
crops had preceded this ono and now
to be "cleaned out" entirely by the lit
tle wingless devils of grasshoppers
looked cruel and meant uttter ruin to
many. Lost homesteads, endeared by
years of hard toil, and the "oy yes!
oh yes !" of the Sheriff seemed to sound
in many an ear. 35y a wonderful in
terposition of some overruling power
all ' thssa catastrophes have been
in great measure avoided. The fields
bore abundantly the fruits yielded as of
yore, prices havo been good on the
whole,and except those who persistent
ly and willfully ran in debt, the new
year will open with brighter prospects,
than for many a day, and although
it seems like telling an old, old story,
yet the "good times coming," so long
prophesied, ate almost at our doors.
Those'ar IIos agala.
We did'nt mean to speak of the hog
nuisance again but have been requ st
to do so by several gentlemen of such
respectability that wo propose to give
the honorable council one more turn
although ;is it must soon freeze up
aKuit all the damage has been done,
and all the annoyance allowed to cul
minate. We did not propose to make a per
sonal matter of this, but the pmt week
has developed such an amount of an
noyance that we must protest, When
sick people can get no rest for the hog
nuisance and one js obliged to rise
from a sick bed to drive the hogs out
and nail gatc3 up it is a shame Among
the gentlemen who complain of this
nuisance are Tlev. Father Hayes, Chap
lain Wright, both gentlemen of taste
and culture, Win. Neville says $23
wont repay the damage they have done
him and Messrs Jones & Stroud say they
can't leave a barn door open i moment
without hogs run all over the barn
tloor and in the stalls.
The Herald pointed out a way to
avoid this, and the only conclusion
that can b drawn is that the Council
do not care for the good opinion of
such men as Father Hayes, Chaplain
Wright, or the Herald or else that
the non-stock raising citizens of this
town have no rights that the Coun-
cil are bound to respect. How is it?
Omaha held her Silver meeting on
Saturday Evening. It wa3 well at
tended and passed strong resolutions
among which are the following:
Resolved, That we ask our fellow cit
izens through the state of Nebraska
to hold mass meetings iind take prompt
action in the premises; let the west
speak out in no uncertain sound; let
our representatives at Washington
know the views and feelings of their
constituency; and that we will hold up
the hands of our representatives and
sustain them in theii efforts to secure
free coinage of silver as lawful money
and fuiriegal tender. Free coinage,
free speech and abundant labor is the
sentiment of the west. Unrestricted
currer.cy for the people and the bond
holder alike; no invidious distinctions
and r.o class legislation; the consum
mation of Cfcse priciples and these
only, will be satisfactory.
Resolved. That we hereby respectful
ly request our so'nators and representa
tives in congress to use all honorable
means to secure the remonetization of
silver, its unrestricted coinage, and
the establishment of a United States
mint and assav office at the city of
Omahn.
Resolved, That the chairman and sec
retary of this mass meeting cause the
above resolutions to be forwarded to
every member of congress, to the cabi
net, and president of the United States.

Omaha Then and Now.
The following "Ode to Omaha," cred
ited to John G. Saxe, first appearea in
print in 18GG, since which time Omaha
has improved in many respects, especi
ally in business and in morals, but in
mud it seems to bo as bad as ever, if
not woise:
Hast ever been in Omaha,
Where rolls the dark Missouri down.
.And four strong horses scaree can draw
An empty wajjou through the town?
Where muddy waters rise and swell,
Withjfearful and resistless might.
Where lish are caught by sense of smell,
Because they cannot see to bite?
Where sand is blown from every mound.
To fill your eyes aud ear and throat,
W here all the steamers are aground.
And all the houses are afloat? v
Where whisky shops the livelong night,
Are vending out the horrid juice.
Where men are often pretty tight
And women often very loose?
Where laser beer is all the m,
Aud bloody scalpers come to trade.
Where everything is overdone.
And everybody underpaid?
If not take heed to what I say.
You'll find it just as I have found it.
And if it lies upou your way.
For God's sake, stranger, go around it.
We had just clipped the above, when
the following came to hand in a letter
from Omaha and we append the whole
screed.
"Can't you give U3 a short editorial
on mud, you know nothirg about it in
Plattsmouth; if you wish to test it in
all its richness and adhesiveness come
to Omaha, and curse the man that
said "Go west, young man. go west."

A Gentle Hint.
In our style of climate, with its sud
den changes of temperature, rain,
wind and sunshine often intermingled
in a single day, it is no wonder that
our children, friends and relatives are
so frequently taken from us by neglect
ed colds, half the deaths resulting di
rectly from this cause. A bottle of
Boschee's German Syrup kept about
your home for immediate use will pre
vent serious sickness, a large doctor's
bill, and perhaps death, by the use of
three or four doses. For curing Con
sumption, Hemorrhages, Pneumonia,
Severe Coughs, Croup or any other di
sease of the Throat or Lungs, its "suc

In the whole history of rdedicine, no
preparation has ever- performed such
marvellous cures, or maintained so
wide a reputation, as Ayer's Cherry
lectoral, which is recognized as the
world s remedy for all diseases of the
throat and lungs. Its long-continued
series of wonderful cures in all cli
mates has made it universally known
as a sate and reliable agent to employ.
Against ordinary colds, which are the
forerunners of more serious disorders,
it acts speedily and surely, always re
lieving suffering, and often saving
life. The, protection it affords, by its
timely use in the throat and lung dis
orders of children, makes it an invalu
able remedy to be kept always on hand
in every home. .No person can afford
to be without it, and those who have
once used it never will. From their
knowledge of its composition and
