O.v a recent flying trip to Weeping
Water the IIkuald correspondent was
much surprised with the energy and
deteunination of the merchants there
shown bj,T the immense stocks of
goods they carry, and the rapidity with
which they get rid of them. The Reed
Brothers have their huge store from
top to bottom filled with all kinds of
goods. On the second floor they have
a room expressly for heady made
CLO'rnixo. of which they have some
thing for every taste, another room
contains pieces of dry goods which :re
taken down as they are needed in the
retail department, another room is sup
plied with boots and shoes, wooden
ware, The lower or main sales
room is filled from floor to ceiling with"
every variety of goods, which the gen
tlemanly proprietors with their army
of clerks aro always at hand to exldbit
and measure off to the crowds of cus
tomers who fill the store.
Nebraska. City feels bad over the
change in railway matters down there.
Here is what a correspondent to tiie
Omaha Herald writes:
Ihc Situation in Otoe County.
Nkbraska Citv, Xov. 12. We are
now just beginning to enjoy the com
forts of the new order of things since
the Midland or Nebraska Railwav has
fallen into the hands of the Jl. & M. R.
R. To-day we have a new time table,
giving the exact time of the departure
and arrival of one jirlcnj train a day
between this city and Lincoln. What
I mean by a- "jirkey" is one that con
sists of one old passenger coach and
fifteen or twenty freight cars, devour
ing some three hours to make the trip
between here and Lincoln, most of
which time is taken up by switching
and jerking the passengers' head off at
the littie stations along the line.
We are sorry for individual friends,
there, and we believe the, newspapers
at the time urged the proper course up
on the people, but had it not been for
the ungenerous and suicidal policy of
the mass of citizens led by interested
men in Neb. City, we should long ago
have had the Trunk R. R. built, and
both Plattsmouth and Neb. City would
have been comparatively independent
of all such accidents.
Somehow we have always felt that
their great friend, J. Sterling Morton,
had a big hand in defeating the build
ing of the Trunk Road time and again.
If so perhaps revenge is sweet.
(jOv.ii.vi:r.KH appointed Dr.Mathew
son, of Omaha, as Sup't of the Insane
Hospital, at Iincoln. It may be prop
er to say here, that while the citizens
of this place, and friends of Dr. Liv
ingston, made a strong effort for his
appointment, backed up by a large
portion of the medical fraternity of the
State, it is well known in this commu
nity that Dr. L. ma le no effort o". his
own behalf and that his opinion has
been fixed and openly expressed ever
since the es ahlishment of this institu
tion that the better way to provide for
its Superinteiid'Micy would be to obtain
the services oT ;i pliysici.in of standing,
a graduate of some of the well known
Institutions of the land which have
given their entire time and attention
to diseases of the brain. Dr. L. has
heretofore, and did this time, honestly
and sincerely recommend such action
to the Governor, suggesting some per
son whom Dii. (Ieav, of N. Y., would
recommend; Dr. Cray being an author
ity in such matters. Had this course
been adopted by the Governor it would
have taken the appointment out of the
realm of State politics and local jeal
ousies entirely, and been much better
for the State at larse. As between
residents of the State, we should like
to have seen Dr. Livinstou appointed,
at tlia same time our best wish is that
Dr. M. may prove competent, faithful,
and judicious in his management of
this hitherto much abused public In
stitution, and that he may fully and
completely jus ify the wisd mi of :he
Governor's choice.
Dr. Livingston was .ITere! this
same position at the very inception
and formation of an Insane Hospital
in this State. Gov. Butler pressed the
appointment of Supt. upon him, but he
advised the same course of action then
as now, and the result was the appoint
ment of Dr. Larsh.

AT S!OfX CITY.
Siorrt City, Iowa. Nov. .13. An
earthquake here alout 11.35 this morn
ing caused great commotion, the people
leaving their dwellings and places of
business, seeking safety out of doors.
At the public schools, and also at St.
Mary's Church, where a large congre
gation had gathered to witness the con
firmation ceremonies, considerable of a
panic occurred, but no one wa.s injured.
There was no shock, but a very distinct
oscillating motion, apparently from
northwest to southeast, and of about
twenty seconds' duration. Reports
from Fort Randall and other .points
west show that it was much more se
vere than here.
AT OilAIIA.
Omaha, Neb., Nov. 13. Three dis
tinct earthquake shocks, lasting about
ten seconds, were plainly perceptible
here at 11 :10 to-day, especially in the
upper stories of brick and stone build
ings. In Columbus, the bells in the
public buildings were struck. In North
Platte the cases i the printing office
were overturned. The weather was
very pleasant.
TLATTSMOUTir.
Plattsmouth, Neb., Nov. lo. A
distinct earthquake shock was felt
here to-day a few minutes before 12
o'clock. The bank building, a three
story brick, was shaken considerably.
An upper story of the High School build
ing, a four story brick, was reported
cracked. Great confusion ensued among
the children, and some were injured in
their franti" endeavors to escape.
II LA lit.
Blaiu. Xrb.. Nov. Two distinct
shocks of an caithquakt- were felt here
at ll:i a.m. Crockery was shaken
up, and goods carelessly placed on

damage to buildings. The motion seem
ed to be from east to west. Weather
clear and warm.
rr:s ?:oixr.s.
Des Moixks. Xov. 15. A number of
earthquake shocks in quick succession
were felt here at 12: 15 to-day. The
motion apparently was east and west,
and lasted about two minutes. No
material damage was done in the city
nor in Western Towa, so far as can be
learned, though the destruction of a
number of high brick buildings was for
a time seriously threatened. At the
high school a slight panic occurred, but
without injury to any one.
IOWA CITV.
Iowa Citv, Iowa, X v. 15. At half
past twelve o'clock to-day quite a se
vere earthquake shock was fi lt at this
place. Persons in second and third sto
ries of buildings ran down to the street
in clai m, and on the ground floor doors
.and windows were jarred and rattled.
DKXNIvOX.
Dr.s Moixns, Iowa. Xov. 15. A spe
cial to the State Register from Deiuu
son, Crawford County, reports a slight
shock of earthquake at th.it place at
seven minutes past 12 to-day. There
weretwo vibrations passing from north
east to northwest. The shock was felt
most severely in brick buildings. Chan
deliers vibrated several inches.
TOFI'KA.
Topkica, Kan.. Nov. 15 A severe
