Dr. Chapman just received a fine
sett of Silver Ware from the Dr.Fitler

Company have got up to stimulate
their agents in the sale of their medi

ware is pronounced first rate and the
Doctor concludes they are a sample of

Trip Notes Continued.
Wo paid the Tefft farm at Avoca a
visit a few days since. Found the old
gentleman and Jds son looking after
some line steers they had just got in
to feed the coming Winter. Their ar
rangements for the purpose are com
plete. Large Stock Yards with a fine
s"pring creek running through them
with stona bottom that can le crossed
at any point. They have in addition
to about 10 head of steers which they
will fa, upwards of 100 head of cows,
calves, young stock and hogs in quan
tity. Among the rest was thorough
bred short horn bull, 1 year old in July,
that we saw weighed, turning the scales
at U42 pounds. Mr. TelTt brought him
from the celebrated herd of Hon. J no.
Wcntworth, of Illinois, the finest calf
we have seen in the State Mr. Tefft
also brought a thoroughbred cow with
with him, that weighed 1,500 lls on
grass. The TelTt home farm of four
hundred anil eighty acres is complete in
many respects splendidly watered in
various places with line spring-, good
body of timber and a quantity of land
that is unequaled in this portion of
the state. They have a line young or
chard of many hundred trees, looking
splendidly. Large anl convenient
Dwelling House -and Grounds. The
former can be seen many miles in all
directions. They also have another
farm of -IS J acres 2 miles west, on
which is a hug-; orchard, from which
over 1 ,00) bushels of apples were taken
last year.

take this opportunity to express our

A letter from Mr. Emery Hull to his
father, states that he was accidentally
shot, on tha 23d of August, near the
Big Horn Mountains. Mr. Hull was
standing on the o.T side of the front
wheel, holding it while the horses
rested. A comrade came up to help
hold the hind wheel, and threw his ri
fle carelessly across tlie load; the ham
mer caught on a dry goods box and
was discharged, the ball taking effect
in Mr. Hull's groin. The ball remain
ing in his p3ison, ha was taken back
to Fort lt?no, and at the writing of the
letter lay there, waiting for a surgeon
to cut it out.

Mr. C. II. Dakin, of Decatur, spent
Sunday with the Heuald folks.
Doc Jones is slowly getting over his
rheumatism, and will soon be able to
take a foot race or walking match with
the best of them.
Adam Kaufenberger, an old friend
of the Herald, leaves for Oberkinsig,
Hesse-darmstadt, in Germany, this
coming week, for a 3 or -1 months stay.
Senator Paddock returned home on
Tuesday last. Mrs. Paddock remains
east for the present, under medical
care, having been seriously ill for some
months past.
Mr. Henry Kirkham, one of the old
settlers of Plattsmouth, and one of the
best working and straightforward men
we have ever had, called at the Her
ald Office Monday.
Among the many who went .up to
thi Stafe Fair we noticed Mrs. D. II.
Wheeler, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Cutler,
Mrs. S. F. Cooper, Mr. L. A. Moore, and
Mr. Frank Stadter. Mr. Moore took
up a handsome collection of cut flowers
and Mr. Stadter some fine specimens of
his paintings.

The State Fair is in full operation.
The Editor of this pap-r left the Fail
Grounds yesterday afternoon as the
big Balloon was preparing to ascend.
The display of stock is very fine and
larger than in several years before.
Among the very fine herds of cattle
are those of the Hon. Thos. Cavanagh
Secretary of State in Kansas, who has

They are be.f cattle and rivals to the
Short Horns. Mr. C. claim j they are
an original and pure stock of their own
and we guess the Herd book records
will bear him out in that.

fine herd, which we shall describe more
in detail at some future time.

short horn bulls iii the arena, wliicli
would le hard to beat anywhere.
Two of Mr. Fitzgerald's, Mr. Lyman's,
of Beatrice, and Mr. Daniel's, fine bull
were among t'ae number. "We left be

TUESDAY EVENING.
The wool growers of Xeb., present
at the Fair assembled in one of tlie
rooms of the Commercial. Mr. Foss
of Saline Co. was chosen President,
Jno. A. MaeMurphy Sect. There is
already an association of wool growers
called the southern Xebraska associa
tion of wool growers and sheep breed
ers and it was thought desirable by
many to make a state organization.
Mr. Stocking, Mr. Elliott, Mr. Caryand
others spoke of the sheep prospects of
Xeb., and the need of more good sheer,
better ways of handling the wool and
the general improvement of flocks.
All agreed that the state was a good
slate for sheep and in view of the dire
ful effects and losses of hogs by chol
era; behooved our farmers to turn
their attention to other branches of in
dustry as speedily as possible and not
depend on the hog alone.
There were 40t)0 entries on Tuesday
evening, Mr. Daniels big steer weigh
ing 4000 lbs., is one of the wonderful
sights of the fair.
Mr.jGavanagh's Hereford Bull, Brit
ton is three years old and weighs 222G
lbs.
"Lady" the oldest cow received a
special notice from the English exam
iners at the Centenial last year.
Among the friends the IIekald were
introduced too, were Mr. Prime, Agri
cultural Editor of the Chicago Tribune
and son of Dr. Prime of tha Observer
Xew York. Also Mr. Kenyon of the
Inter Ocean, Chicago. Both gentlemen
are out here to see and tell what Xeb.,
is like and examine the exhibit of our
progress both at Lincoln and through
the state. They spoke very favorably
of their imppessions thus far.
