We want the University.
The late report of the "Regents on
the university building at Lincoln ne
cessitates the rebuilding of that insti
tution, it seems, and asks $10,000- of
the Lincolnites. It wiil then cost the
.'late C0.00O. Noyt if they will move
the university here wo will sivo them
a IvitnJsome three story building as
finely situated as any in Nebraska, and
a few thousands added will be all that
is needed from the State.

On Friday afternoon the IIeuai.d

Mis Gertie Johnson put the boys
through in geography; she made the

she wasn't happy.
After that they had a blackboard ex
ercise, and wo think the little folks
could achieve the highest kind of re
taliation if they should visit these ex
ercises and see a great big teacher chap,
get corcf used, bl 1131. St sramer, rub chalk
on his nose and then stagger to his seat.
I'rof. Drummond and Mis3 J. took a
tilt several times. Drummond mads
s )me remark about brains in the desk,
uud got a' very happy retort.
At cne stage of the game it beearae

I'rof. Thompson.
Saturday afternoon Prof. Thompson
gave a series of experiments with the
apparatus belonging to the High School
aad told us he had seen ins.'ruments
AT. yurcliased for $10 that were of more
practical use in real instruction than
those costing S"0(X (If our tax-payers
Lad only known that a year or two
ago.) Said any good teacher with any
mechanical ingenuity could make near
ly everything he needed with a jack
knife, a jack plane, and some bits
wire and rubber tubing, the wholo

The County Superintendents also
hold a meeting Saturday, and since, to
confer about the best method of con
ducting their work, all of which will
hi found in the minutes elsewhere.
The Institute proper closed on Tues
day. Exam: nation of teachers, grant

tendent's work wore cont'tiv.?d Wednes
day and Thursday.
Altogether the Institute has been
very pleasant to us, and we hope use
ful to those who attended. For a lit
tle while Ave have had something else
besides, politics, temperance, the credit

rels to tuk about and a few grand
thoughts given us to think about.

Nebraska Farmer Excursion

Ed. IIekald: Accepting an invita
tion to attend a picnic on last Satur
day, gotten up by Mr. Joseph Robinson,
teacher near Three Groves, as a last
farewell to his pupils, we wended
our way to the residence of Mr. J.G.Old
ham, in whose grove the good time
was to be. Resting for a slort time
in the cool shade, the croquet furnish
ed amusement until the "little speech
es by little folks" began, which were
well done considering the diminutive
ness of the speakers. After each had
said his or her say, they marched out
in double fh'e to the grove and gathered
around the well filled tables, where we
all diil jubticc to ourselves a3 well as
the refreshments furnished by the
"good mothers," which consisted of
everything that heart could wish, and
spiced with cool lemonade. When all
had filled themselves to their utmost,
we adjourned to the inviting parlor
of Mrs Oldham, and listened to some
delicious instrumental music by Mi.is
Fannie Stanford, as well as vocal
music by Mi.-ses Stanford, Chalfant,
Oldham, and Schuloff. Croquet again
being in order, the balls were kept
rolling until too dark to see the arches.
1 must also mention that Mr. Jas. Al
lison and his new found bride were in
attendance, looking exceedingly happy
in spite of the excessive heat of the day.

stantinople dispatch announces the
Russians approaching Rasgrad, and
have probab-y already cut the railway
near that point, It is conjectured that
the Turks will maintain a defensive
line from Ilustc'iuk via S humla to Oz
mau Bazar, and will give battle in the
open country. The Constantinople
telegram strongly opposes this pre
suniption.siiicij th.': chief object of such
a defensive line would be to protect
the railway which feeds the quadrilat
eral. Th'n railway lias now been ap
parently cat by the Russians without
opposition .
SPJXt'LATIONS.
A more pa.isible theory is that the
Turks will await the development, of
the Russian Campaign, in expectation
thit Rustchuk and Shumla must ba
besieged mid one or both be reduced
before the advance on the Balkans can
be undertaken. They hop,? thus to
consume the seasxm wherein opposi
tions are practiclc. as Rvistchnk and
Shumla are believed capable of length
ened resistance, and in the meantime
the Balkan passes could be stregthened
and reinforced.
TWO THINGS APrEAU CEIITAIX:
First, that the Russians cannot seize
the passes of the Balkans or Sophia by
a coup de main, as was at one time
expected, since the Turks have already
taktn precautions against such move
ments. Secondly, the single bridge at
Simnitza remains the only remains of
communicating with and supplying
the army south of th3 Danube. As
this bridge must be barely a-K-quato
for the day-to-day requirements, and
has been several timss broken by
storms and the current of the river,
there cannot yet have b:'en any such
accumulation of material and trans
port at sistova as would justify a gen-
ateany very startling movement ? for
the presen. and, if th Tur'-.s chocse to
keep their fortifications, advices from
Bulgaria bid fair to continue of the
