LITIRAUY SOCIETY.
The Plattsmouth Literary Society
met at the Court House Friday, Feb.
2d. The meeting was called to order
by Mr. J. Leesley, who was elected
temporary Chairman. The Secretary
being absent, Dan. II. Wheeler, jr., was
elected Secretary, pro tern. The elec
tion of President being next in order.
Mr. I'. P. Gass was elected nnd took
the chair. Tli3 Constitution and By
laws were then read by the Secretary
and approved. Next in order was
signing the roll and paying the initia
tory fee, 23 cts., which constitute a
member. Busiuess being all transacted
the debate was then commenced. The
question for discussion was "Resolved,
that man would do more for the love
of woman than for the love of money."
Mr Joseph Fairfield being leader of the
negative and Mr. Jno. Leesley of the
affirmative, Mr. L. began the discuss
ion. The judges elected were E. Sage,
E. Parmele, and J. Vallery, who decid
ed that the affirmative gained the ques
tion. It was then decided that the
question for discussion next Friday
eve be I!esoIved that circumstances
make a man rather than his own effort."
Captains were then elected, Thomas
Wiles for the affirmative and W. L.
Well 3 for the negative. Sides were
then chosen and the meeting adjourn
ed until 7:-J p. m., Friday eve, Feb. 9th

with a severe accident Thursday morn
ing, while swinging on the clothes line

The news comes from every quarter
that King Grasshopper, lured from his
wintry slumber by the balmy deceitful
voice of this mild weather, is coming
forth in myriads, and his rebellious
slave, man, is rejoicing in the hope that
a few days more of sunshine will con
tinue to tempt him forth, andthen win
ter will reassert herself and end his
shortlived happiness. Several farm
ers from the Platte Bottom report that
grasshoppers are hatching out in those
sands in myriads, and it is also stated
that they are hatching in the Weeping
Water Valley. Glory.

We received a call a day or so ago
from Azro Smith, esq., successful and
scientific raiser and vendor of garden
sass. He reports himself as going to
the Black Hills, leaving his boys to run
the vegetables.
One of the most patient of men is the
milkman, rain or shine, wet or cold, he
makes his rounds, and often when the
pan "can't be found," or "the tickets
are lost," he has to wait and ring and
ring and wait. Editing a paper tries
the patience, but we don't know but
that a milkman is as severely tried.
We thought Beaumeistei must freeze
some mornings this winter.

We received a call on Tuesday last
from Mr. W. II. Dakin, who made it

and fur business, of New Y"ork, and
was en route for San Francisco, a trip
which he takes three or four times a

LECTURE.
Dr. Dio. Lewis will be in Platts

employe of Mr. Ilatt, the butcher, dun
ned a colored gentleman for SO cents
due for meat. The dunning was re
peated several times, the colored gen
tleman stilting he had no money. Sny
der's pugilistic propensities were final
ly aroused and he undertook going
through the drkoy, who threw Snyder
instead, and finally whipped out a rix-
or, and.iuilicted a few slight gashes.
