THE HERALD, "" NEW YORK" LETTER. Scnryi-Eii's Laki X. Y., ) Jaii'y 12th, 1377. ( Editou or the IIeuald: Think ing tli lt -i leLtcr from tliis y:rt of the country may prove interestiug, thin is respectfully submitted to the IIeralt. Since election, the all-absorbing tepic of conversation has been the solution of the Presidential question, but the unusual character of the winter merits mention. Seer autumn tarried much beyond liis usual period, and robb-d winter of a portion of hla realm; but ths hoary monarch at la3t asserted his sway, and bound the earth closer in his icy fet ters, lie forbore mantling the earth at onte in deep snow and accomplished hi3 work more insidiously and syste matically. Day by day the Hakes fell, and added little by little to the accum ulation; but, never-the-lesa, the mas3 grew apace, and the winds swept it in to ravines and fence corners. The roads were died and barricaded by drifta which were piled into grotesque and fanciful shapes. Winter drew his bonds closer, and the cold grew more intense. More snow fell, and waa gathered by the winds, and within a month many of the roads were impas sible, and outdoor work impracticable. Thu3 by surprise, as it were, there had accumulated at the beginning of January, narly three fet of snow, which is an unprecedented depth, at that early period of the winter, as the hills are then often nearly bare, and the roads filled with frozen mud. The Centennial year has been remarkable for its meterological features; but this Las not been exceeded by any which ha3 preceeded it. One of the peculiarities of the win ter, h:i3 been the regularity with which storms have occurred en the closing tUv of each week. A carnival of storm has invariably taken place on Satur day, and a greater part cf the snow has fallen, and the highest winds have oc curred on that unforunate day. One of the latter attained a velocity of more tan seventy miles per hour, and was traceable in its effect over a considera ble titent of country. But all were extended in their effects, and appar ently storm-waves, which were passing over the country in different directions. Some came direct from the frozen re gions of the north, and some arrived from the same roint by a more circuit ous wav, of the north-west, where no extensive mountain chain intervenes, ...nd free passage is left them for the annual inrigorat ion of climate. Oth ers crossed the continent from west to ezsl, and although tempered by the breath of the topics at their departure from the Pacific were cooled "by the successive mountains chains which were crossed in their course, and ar rived little milder in temperature than those from the colder regions of the north. A storm is one day reported from a certain locality, and on the fol lowiag a repetition follows from an other in the advancing track, repeti tion succe I reretition, until the trace is lest in the ocean. A comparative calm follows, and freezing humanity once more recovers its cheerful tene; but the succeeding wfek brings its in evitable storm, and cheerfulness gives place to murmuring discontent. Storm-waves from the wet can be traced long distances by reports from dlilerent places in their line of pro gress. On the Pacific coast they are surcharged with moisture, and accom panied with rain ; but in the passage over the Seirra Nevada Mountains, their temperature is greatly reduced, and they part with considerable mois ture in the form of snovr. They puffer further reductions of temperature in passage of succeeding ranges of snow capped mountains, and at the summit of the Rocky mountains attain that freezing character which readers them so disagreeable farther cast. They are heralded by an increasing arc of driv ing snow, dark at the base with a light er border above, enveloping the moun tains and rising gradually higher abave their crests. The sun shines brightly, the heavens are unclouded, nothing for bodes the storm but the ominous arc. "When the arc ha3 attained a height of nearly 45, the suppressed roar of rush ing winds is heaid. Nearer the storm advances, and louder it is heard, until it suJdenly bursts fortlr in all its fury. The blinding snow from the summit, and intermediate country is precipitated upon the mountain regions below, and driven through the air, scarch'ng out smallest crevices, until it is deposited in inaccessible places. The winds TBweep through the gorg?s and over the crests of dividing ridges, varied only by occasional gusts of increased power, as if a portion had evidently escaped from temporary confinement in some mountain gorge. U rival is hurled into the air, and soil swept away. Wagons are evcrturned and trees prostrated. Hat still it rushes onward toward the rising sun. It retards the movement of trains upon the plain?, and drives the frontiersmen within doors. Re ports of iti progress arrive successive ly from the Missouri, the Mississippi, and the Ohio valleys. Onward it moves over the hills and vales of the Atlantic States, and at last the ocean is lashed into surging foam by the blast which has traversed the ccntiuent from hoie to shore, two or three week3 from its rise in the west. Such is a htorra, which is often extended in its effects over the widest extent of coun try. GEOGRAPHICAL PUZZLE. Winter had come with its ice storms and snow. The wind was a lake in the Argentine Confederation and ma king a terrible Lalte in New York. While all without was a Cope west of Alaska and all at home was in a town in Utah and a ricer of New Britain. My Father was a Point west cf Newfoundland and a bay south of Newfoundland had followed me from my birth. My parents had consented to the toicn in Ohio be tween a wealthy City of Wi.t'-onsin and myself, which was to take place '.hat day. .1 Fort in the Indian Terri tory came to discourse sweet music, a City in Rhode Island smiled, and all was a Lake in New York. As we started upon our journey to cur new home, a pet town in. Jlichtgin lut tered a sweet good bye. Soon after we were Settled nl?icer in Oregon in disguise came and begged us to lodge him over night. Riing pleased with his looks we assented, putting him on a town in Illinois with ourselves, which act showed no River in Mon tana on our part. He proved full of the Lake in Iowa of the Lake in Dakota. The next day he, thanking us for our hospitali y left, and we soon missed a' gold watch my husband had taken in a Lake of Ontario and a favorite but Luke in New York cam. I also missed some Islands of Oceanica This was a town of Michi gan dashed upon our peace, for a while, but we bid a town 'in Ohio to anything like depression of our spir its. Ere the winter was gone by, many a River in Prussia we had. But when the Lake of Canada were dressed in Mountains of Vermont, and the Robins were beginning to obey the instincts to -a town on the Hud son, my husband.a man of a town in Missouri was a sea of Palestine and I was left alone. Akolf. The Pines. Jan. 5th, 1877. Peer Mr. liditur We wuz rendia in yer last week's paper, (step-uncle and I wuz,) at least he wuz a readin and I wuz pirttin' away the supper dishes, and we see there how it amoze "Drtsey" that so few writ to the -Letter All at w 11 use I sez to Step-Uncl, (lie is my Step-Uncle on my mother's sid.-, she never havin' no bruthers ov her own.) sez I 'Step-Uncle, I'm a gcin' to write and back up that Miss Uetsey" sez I, wipin' my bands on the. wrong side uv my kkchen apron to apeer cool, fur I knowed rite away he'd be sure to say somethin' agen it, as he's always on the other side ov everythin' ye can mention. Siep-Uncle gev a jump sure enuff, and droped the paper he had ben a holdin so iovin like, and he tuk off his glasses an guv me a look, (and tru ly. Mistt-r Kditur. it beats all. the look that man is capable ov givin and.es peshly to his step nicer. I get them looks at every turn till I've offen wish ed that Step-Uncle would lose his eyes indeed I hev, wicked as it is, only I know he'd turn his nose or some other liniment to do duty in their stead, so it would'nt make any difference,) well, as I sed, he tuk cfl his glasses and wav in them round as if they was some kind of a magic wand that he'd like to turn me into a frozen potato or some suc h kind of a fruit with, Sez he "So phiar dont be a fool!' and I kin tell the Letter boxes friends it aint such a awful plesent thing to hev thet yelled at you at evry turn as Step-Uncle is always reddy to do) and sez he "Sophi ar. dor.t ye kno ut.et ye never bed no school in to signify," sez he, "and hev'nt 1 told ye oSen and offen (beetin time with his glasses in the air) that larnin was a labbyrinth? Then I guv him back a look to match his'n and I sez "and what's a lanbyrinth V" I see in a minit he was tuk aback, fur he picked up the paper offen the fieor and folded it up and then the way he used his handkercher!"My goodness! Sez he, arter a good deal of wigglin (as he saw I was waitin to be answered) sez he: Gal, a labbyrinth is a sort ov a whirl imagig that ye cant 2nd yer way out cft,"aez lie, "youre always a wantin to know things ye cant nuderstan and yer the most sot ov any ov yer sect" sez he, "and I sec by the Marin ov yer eye that yer set to writin to thet Letter Box and yed ruther hev yer eye teeth pulled this minit," sez he, fa bobbin his hed till I look I fur it to drop off) than to think you could'nt write." then he gave a kind ov a snoit. ' Th?t made me mad and sez I a glarin at him "what if I hev a hankerin after writin ? Id like to know" sez I fgeltin over to be handy to the door) "if you want a braggin un ot Ilencry Clay butause i hed rather write than be President," sez I "and when the editur ov our town invites the young folkes to write and they need backin up I aint. a burtin anybody if I help incurridge them, the beiu a gal as never had the blessin ov no schoolin as they orter be thankful fur thet hes," and I walked off with an answerin snort to hisn. While I am a ponderin bow to make this letter short Step Uncle is a lookin at me and actin' as if be was tuk bad with the Newral igy in his head and hands, but as I kno ha never has nothiu in his hed (but a bad cold on his nose sometimes) I just bet a new nickel h?s wrathy. Mebbe Mi?s Betsey, or some ov yer friends, bein as she seems a kindly person, would make me easy in mind as to the "labbyrinth" and whether Mister Hen ery Clay ever said hed rathur write then" be President, 'fur to tell the truth 1 dont more'n half believe Step Uncle knows. Your very resptable, Sophiak. Last week the Poat publisded the first verse of an alleged poem on Great Eastern.
