On Monday evening just as most
white folks were sitting down to sup
per the cry of fire rang out on the
streets and.Mr. C. Parmele's premises
were found to be on fire. It was caus
ed by the explosion of a lamp, "and a
number of books and other property
were destroyed before the fire could be
extinguished. The loss was estimated
at$lC0, and promptly paid by Capt.
Palmer, the agent. It might have been
worse.' .

For some time back the Herald
has been in great trouble. Ladies
would rush in and out and whisper and
talk and all we could catch was the
