Mrs. M. A. Jeffers,
201.-J Eight Mile Grove, Neb.
The Tr.::.vr.n had a very pleasant
call, Monday, from Mr. E. E. Woolsey,
of Three Groves, w ho, we are sorry to
s;iy, is about to leave, us for Otoe coun
ty in tlie spring. Mr. Woolsey has just
sold his farm in this county for $10,000.
It may not be uninteresting to note
the f;wts connected with the cost and
sale of this laud. One hundred and
sixty acres were pre-empted at govern
ment price. 1.2 per acre; 203 acres
more were added at different times at
an average of less than 85 per acre.
It now brings over $2 per acre, of
course with all the impra vein cuts.
Mr. Woolsey has lived in this county
since IS 57, consequently he is one of
our oldest si t tiers. He cama here with
small menus and became independent
by industry and the use of good corn
men sense and a thorough knowledge
of his business.
He raised cattle and horses quite ex
tensively and it is presumable fed up
his surplus grain and marketed it in
the shape of stock. AVe have made
the few remarks above- to help show
that farming in Nebraska will pay
when conducted with sense and skill.
While we are sorry to lose so good a
citizen as Mr. Woolsey, we are glad to
learn that his firm has been purchased
by another live and energetic Nebras
ka farmer, w ho will probably enlarge
and improve it still moiw. Tha pur
chaser is Mr. Anderson Boot, of .Lin
coln, and now manager of the Agricul
tural farm of the State under the
control of the University. Mr. Boot
owns another farm almost adjoining
the one he has just bought and will
mov to Cass county in the spring.
Mr. Woolsey retires to a smaller farm
near Nebraska City and will enter into
the brokerage business. We hope he
may be as successful there as he has
been here, and we shall welcome Mr.
Boot, as a citizen, with great pride.

Mr. Geo. A. Creamer, a gentleman
living near the Byehart family, and we
believe a justice of the peace there, de
sires the Herald to make a correction
from the apparent statement of -the
commissioners, that he charged lSfor
three trips to visit Byharls. The facts
are that the bill was not itemized, and
that the charge covered C trips to
Plattsmouth and 3 to Louisville. He
was obliged to go to the Byhart house
two or three times each day; he fur
nished 4 bushels of fresh limo and 3
worth of xrood bedding. All this was
included in the one charge of $18.00, be
sides he went to Louisville for nurses
on Sunday. With tlie exception of two
times he had to take a team on each of
these trips. He thinks that $18 would
not pay for his time at day wages, let
alonu tlie things he furnished or the
use of tho team, and if his statement is
correct it would not.

FAIR NOTES AND S(JUIRS.
Sam Thomas was around at the Fair

Wolf & Porter were the best fellows
on hogs. We always thought Wolves
were after sheep and we supposed Por

P. Merges had that big boot out there.
It swallowed all the rest.
Leonard made tho finest Photograph

Frank Stadter scooped 'em out on
Oil Painting. His portrait of Dr. Liv

and things.
The Johnson Organ played 'cm all
out and took a "double first."
Dr. McCrea by his hoivycd proceed
ings coaxed a first out of the Com.
Mrs. Walker made the best jelly and
Mr. Walker ap-pears to win on Pears.
There's a pair of "firsts" in the family.
Hesser just filled one side of the
house nearly, as usual, and got away
with several red cards.
Azrq Smith had stacks of Cottage
Dell things and hilled his pockets with
red ribbons.
The display of apples was very fine;
much better than we expected to see,
and potatoes, s.piashes, pumpkins and
all root-vegetables, were just immense.
Altogether our Exposition did not ex
