SUDDEN DEATH.
At Omaha, in the Grand Central Ho
tel, at five o'cl;k, Tuesday morning.
Sept. 7th, 1873, passed away the spirit
of Whitney D. Cowles, General Freight
and Ticket Agent of the H. & M. H. R.
in Nebraska.
Deceased was about S3 years of age,
a Knight Templar, and a pure, true,
honest. Christian Gentleman as ever
lived. His disease was an affection of
the heart which superinduced Asth
ma. While he died apparently alone in a
Public Hotel, no man ever came to
Xebraska, who made so many honest
and true friends in so short a lime its
W. I). Cowles, and if the love, or care,
r affection of comparative strangers
could have saved his life, he would
be among us to-day. The life and soul
of every household he came among,
his sudden taking off has left a void
and a blank in our heart not easily
filled.
While he lived among us in Platts
mouth, we gained an insight into his
real, true nature, anil respected his
many virtues. The patience with
which he bore his never cttasing physi
cal pains, was wonderful, and the Her
ald desires to say that no person out
side of our own family, could be so
truly mourned or so deeply regretted.
He was a memlier of the Episcopal
Church of this place. His body will
be conveyed to Columbus, Ohio, for
interment in the family vault.
From Mr. Iloldrege and comrades in
the R. R. sei vie?, we learn the follow
ing facts:
Mr. Cowles served the R. & M. IL R.
of Iowa, as Cashier and Pay-Master,
for several years ; was then Eastern
Passenger Agent in X. Y for the" C.
H. & Q.. and finally Gen'l Freight and
Ticket Agent of the IJ. & M., here.
He retained his senses almost to the
last. Spoke of de tth with entiie calm
ness;gave full directions about his will,
Aic, and left messages for his brother
and friends.
After this he slept, breathing heavi
ly, for about two hurs, and died with
out waking.
With his youth an 1 natural spirit,
and energy, it must have been hard for
him to leave this world so suddenly,
but he seemed entirely resigned.

TE5I PEIt.VNC E LECTURE.
Dr. Dio Lewis, the great Temperance
Reformer, has been visiting relatives
in Plattsmouth the past week, and at
the earnest solicitation of the members
of the Woman's Temperance Associa
tion he consented to aid them in their
work by addressing the people of Platts
mouth on the subject of Temierance,
ou Sunday evening last.
Although suffering quite severely
from hay fever on account of which
he has refused hitherto to speak, he
waived his objections in favor of Platts
mouth. Sunday evening being stormy pre
vented so large an audience from as
sembling ;ts would otherwise have done,
but still there was a very fair turn out
the Methodist Church being comforta
bly filled. For lack of space we shall
attempt no review of the lecture. We
were very much pleased with it, how
ever, and particularly with the moder
ation evinced throughout Dr. Lewis
who it will be remembered was the
leiKler of the recent Crusade, stated
that the Crusade was a failure wherev
er it was not carried on in christian
love, that when conducted aggressive
ly and persistently for many hours each
day it was contrary to the original in
tention and worked far more harm
than good. He also sketched a plan of
quiet and effective work by means of
committees of two composed either of
men or women, which posessed many
points of merit Throughout all he
continually enforced the mandate,
"whatever you do, do it in a spirit of
love, do not allow anger or impatience
to posess you, for then all your power
is gone."
In the name of the people of Platts
mouth, we thank Dr. Lewis for the
"friendly talk" which so entertained
and instructed us all, and hope that on
his return from California in the spring
he will not pass us by.
Already strangers are coming in
prepatory to exhibiting at our Fair.
