ANSWER TO OLD SETTLER.
"Old Settler" (old fool) did very veil last
week, he re illy showed soniegoodyen.se. We
expected to see l.im get real luad. but lie an
swered us very kindlv. You have done very
well, but yon had to leave your subject and in
troduce soniethin.; which h:us nothing to do
with the original one, vi.. printing. You had
better let that subject alone. It will recoil on
your own parly's head. The Herald has
earned every dollar C':u county ever gave it
for printing.
Wlele you arc on honesty p'ease look, right
over in the columns before your artiele and see
th lies published there by your pet paper (not
the farmer's k-I paper but the committee's pet
paper, and yours, evidently) and as you nre
preat on economy we will tell you how to get
part of yov.r bridge tax back. The editor of
this paper wi'l give you. or any other man $")0
for every time you will find "d d fool" "d d
liar" or any other profanity in the IIkkald. ei
ther in that artieb or any other. Please think
of this. Don't you know that a man never stole
witii his hands until he first stole with his soul,
and don't you know that the first step in vil
lainy is in li.'idcnii! the conscience hy telling
bald-faced lies (and printing them) and accus
toming tl.c tiiliid to think any irn-ans are justi
fiable to gain your ends, even to corrupting and
debauching the public mind by false, inflamma
tory speeches and writings.
What a man 1-a.s got that far he easily takes
one step more, and from thence conies our ras
cals. You ask ns to come down to Weeping Water
oa the 'Jsth. Ilon'll we come? If we should
hire a buggv Todd & Co. would blackguard us

I am bound to exchange my large

Come and see if I don't.
PiiTLTi Mr.noivS.
The meeting at Weeping Water Sat
urday was ruther a mistake, we dare
not say "lizzie" any more, for since the
attempt to muzzle the Press by threats
of proscription and loss of patronage
wo must go sIotv.
Only three precincts were properly
represented ; two more were taken in
by proxy. Xot much business was
transacted, Todd talked most of the
time as usual. They passed one com
ical resolution, viz.:
That they would not patronize any
papers that charged lor publishing In
vest i gating committee reports, or Coun
ty Commissioners "proceedings."
That's rough on the Wat'hwtn, for
not many of them take the Hkhald.
We propose to call a convention to res
olute that those who voted for this res
olution be obliged to raise corn for 10
cents a bushel and wheat for 25 cents.
Well, that's just what we mit-ht ex
pect, and just what Todd's doctrines
and theories lead, to, ''Communism",
and nothing else. If you don't like a
man's writings, or him, confiscate his
properly, hunt hiui up, take his goods
and his time without pay and rulo or
ruin the country. Muzzle the press,
choke the free and independent editors
and then you may win in your politi
cal schemes, not before. Gentlemen,
you haven't money enough, nor patron
age enough in Cass county to prevent
the IIkkald from telling the tkuth,
or what it really, honestly thinks of
you and yours. Fitch in and try.

CROOKED WHISKEY.
Of course Plattsmouth must have a
little crooked whisky. When all out
neighbor towns are finding the "queer"
being a first class city we must follow
suit. So Charley Seymour popped
down on us last week and gobbled six
barrels for Maguire & Curtis .and one
each for Lazenby and Hemple. It is
due these parties to say that no blame
attaches to them. It was the fault
and the crime of the distillers. It's
gone up the spout, now, though.
During the heavy rain and wind
storm last Thursday night, Mr. Ahl,
who lives near Glendale Post Office,
had his barn lifted off of the founda
tion and smashed to pieces by the wind
Outhouses and loose property in that
section wero blown away, and a great
deal of the corn was laid Hat with the
ground.
