CITT ELECTION.
As will be seen elsewhere an especial
election is ordered on the 14th, .to fill
two vacancies in our City Cuim'-il, :ne
in the 1st ward made vacant by the
non-residence of Mr. Newman and the
other in the third ward, vacant by rea
son of the resignation of Mr. Cushing,
whose business is likely to detain him
south some time yet.
It is highly imixjitant to all our cit
zens that these offices should be filled
by honest and able men, bona tide citi
zens and as a rule we prefer men who
have to earn their own living by square
work of some sort ; any way, we want
men that know ; what a dollar means
and how much labor it represents
Our taxes are intolerable, our expen
ses have been extrayagant, for such a
city.
We want a rest, we're all democrats
in this, we want to be let alonelawhile.
we neither want to see an assessment
nor a tax-gatherer until some means
are legale devised to cle ir our cit3
from its present incumbrances.
Property is almost worthless, real es
tate goes begging and yet our expenses
have been added to and kept up. We
hope to see all good citizens out at the
ward meetings. The Herald has giv
en notice of Republican meetings onl3'
because no others have been handed
us and the time will be too short for us
to enquire before the issue of the paper
but we hope no political nonsense will
intervene to prevent our having the
very best men for the place elected.
It's only a short term, but it may be important.
REPUBLICAN WARD MEETINGS.
The Republicans of the 1st ward, of
this city are requested to meet at the
Court House on Saturday evening next
at 7 o'clock sharp to putt in nomination
a councilman for said ward to fill va
cancy of Mr. Newman. A special elec
tion will Ik? held on Monday, the 14th
