AXOTHEK FIRE.
Plattsniouth indulged in a small con
flagration on Saturday last. About 7
o'clock in the evening, the iron tpngued
bell that hangs in a vice on top of Hen
ry Hoeck's pile of brick some times mis
named the engine house, sounded clack
et te clack click, click, click. Soon
the M. E. church bell rang out clear
and lively, too lively for a sermon and
nextly six small boys yelped fire fire!
out of the north-west corner of their
faces. After that 9 dogs and thirteen
men shouted lire and then the whole
town that wasn't sick abed started for
the fire, which was at the City Hotel.
A gal let a lamp drop or something and
three old newspapers and two patent
hoopskirts caught fire. Two little bab
cocks were brought to bear on the fire
ami before Frank "White could chop a
hok' through the roof th whole thing
fizzled out, the fire we mean not the
other things we have written about.

PERSONALS.
Alex. Sehlagel has been down to Lin
coln, playing Odd Fellow.
Moi ybright arrived home on
Saturday last, with Mrs. "Waybright,
who, we are happy to learn, is in much
better health and spirits i.lun before
her trip. Morgan looks ten years
younger for his resting spell.
Mr. John lie verage arrived here last
week, he has been paying a visit to
relatives in Virginia, his old home.
Air. Win. Brentner, an old resident
of Cass bounty, but who has been liv
ing in Virginia for the past two years,
returned to Plattsniouth last week,
bringing a wife with him. Will thinks
Nebraska is far ahead of Virginia.
Waterman, our big lumber man,
went east with his wife Tuesday, for
a good old fashioned visit.

WHERE'S THE (JA'IEZ
The r.nnual hunt of the Plattsniouth
Sporting Club took place on Tuesday
last. Agreeable to custom the Club
met on Monday evening and elected
Hon. Saai. M. Chapman as leader of
one division, and Dr. R. It. Livingston
le:uler of the rest of the PlaUsrr.outh
Salamanders.
By special permit Mr. Geo. Iloldrcge
was allowed to hunt on Monday and
have hi game counted by proper au
thority, lie made 165 points. Pretty
good for a Massachusetts man. Mr.
Vivian, also, being subject to chills ev
ery Tuesday, was allowed to hunt on
Monda3 and returned 190 points.

Each couple started out singly and
alone, annod and equipped, as the law
directs, with a pocket f nil of crackers
and cheese, a small black Uttle, 1 qt.
of salt, and a dollar and fifty cents in
currency, to hire small beys with,
you know.
About noon it commenced raining,
and the boys commenced s shoot
ing under cover we mean ; along to
wards night it began to get dark, and
a good many "hit 'em quicks" came
staggering in under a heavy pressure
of game. As the sun declined to shine
(on this part of the world) more and
more, the "blaze a ways" commenced to
drop down, one by one, singly and in
in pairs, and the game dropped in, too,
only not so fast as the hunters.
When they all got good and wet, and
tired and hungry, they counted the
game and found the "hit 'em quicks"
(Chapman) had 945 points, and the
"blaze aways" (Livingston) tallied l,0:jo.
It is only fair to stato that Chap
man's men shot the most game on the
day of the hunt. Mr. Holdrege and
Mr. Vivian had a clear day to hunt in,
and did exceedingly well, but it was
not Tuesday's hunt.
' Doc. Jones made 190 points, the best
tally made on Tuesday. Chapman was
heavy on Geese, Doc. Livingston went
his length on Ducks. Rabbits and
Squirrels had the field.
They do say Billy Ilobbs went coon
hunting all day. Uncle Streight
caught his by putting line snaps on
their toes. Cutler served a writ of man
dam us on his game, and brought them
in on execution. Joint Shannon used
Cherry Bounce, and Ben Ilempel
Switzer Kase to catch their birds.
Amongst the "hit 'em quicks" Lon.
Cunningham ate all his crackers up at
home, Alex Schlegel used up all the
salt out at Louisville, Fred Dorring
ton threw stones at his, Bill Jones set
the dog on them and brought them in,
by hound; Hank Streight put salt on
their tails too; Matthews sat down and
whittled so melodiously, birds fell into
his trap, at once, and Parker Wise
coaxed his game in with a duplicate
tax-list and future promises, Geo.
Smith got his by habetis corpn.
Altogether it was a jolly day, and
the sti IT, sore, and hoarse chaps, w ho
gaily hunted Tuesday, will set down to
a magnificent supper to-night, judging
by the glorious pile of ;nne, that lay
in Sam Chapman's office yesterday
morning.
The IIekald ain't hungry any, boys!
roiXT.s.
A great many persons not huntists,
do not know what is meant by "points"
in a shooting match. Of course all
game is not alike to catch, and to just
coui.t them by the heal, would be
manifestly unfair, so a scale is agreed
upon according as the different kinds
of game are hard to shoot, or scarce, or
valuable, thus: Prairie chickens count
10; quail, snipe, and small game 5;
Geese, 20 or 25; Ducks, 10 or 15; Tur
key, 50; Rabbit and squirrel, 5; coon,
20; and a Deer, 500. These rules are
arbitrary, and vary in different clubs
and in different hunting districts.
