Charley Yates has been off on a
prospecting tour, up Jind down the 13.
& M, looking after the telegraph, &c.
Maj. Dan Wheeler left us for a few
days after the Fair to recuperate, but
got home in time to act as Judge of
Election and help swell the Ilepublicjui
majority in old Cjuss.
Col. Morse of the B. & M, has gone
and left us. He takes the same posi
tion on the Atchison and Topeka R. R.
in Kansas. The Colonel was so tall
and the Hekald so short, that there
was always a great gap between us,
jind we never got very well acquainted,
yet we are sorry t see the Colonel
leave us. He was a gentleman, and
they are getting scarce now-a-days.
Our loss is Kansas' gain, we suppose-et
we Jill shall miss the Colonel, and the
dogs, and the bay mare with the white
legs, but we wisli them Bon Voyage,
wherever they may go.

BUSINESS NOT AFFECTED.
The recent depression in business
has not affected the passenger traffic of
the St. Louis. Kansas City & Northern
Short Line, as they continue to run six
fast express trains, tico more than any
other line between the Missouri and
Mississippi liivers. This road enjoys
great immunity from accidents, by
reason of immense expenditures, in the
last two years, of over two million dol
lars, besides earnings in wonderful im
provements, in relaying their line with
new steel and iron rails, on broad, new
ties, in new lolling stock supplied with
all modern appliances for comfort and
safety, and as another safeguard, em
ploy night and day watchmen to in
spect the road before and after the
passage of each train, to see that every
thing is in order. Conspicuous among
new improvements is the substitution
for ordinary cars, of new reclining
chair coaches, elegantly carpeted and
fitted with dressing rooms for ladies,
gentlemen and families, witliout any
extra vharye. The St. Louis, Kansas
City & Northern and the Kansas City,
St. Joseph & Council Bluffs liailroad,
form the only line running through
Pullman Palace Sleepers between
Omaha and St. Lnuis. The shortest
line between the West and the East is
over the St. Louis, Kansas City
Northern Short Line, either through
St. Louis, the great metropolis of over
450,000 inhabitants, or through Chica
go, via the Chicago & Alton Short
Line, over the Louisiana Bridge now
open for passage of through trains.
