our old national airs which fired anew
the slumbering embers of patriotism,
and all was excitement and enthusiasm
when forward we marched, Firemen's
Band, Firemen, Firemen's Marshal,
Wells, and the Sunday Schools of 'the
citv followed, led bv Ik Spurlock, their
j standard bearer, carrying aloft our
1 National Emblem of Liberty and Tem
perauce. But alas! we came to the
point of seperation, (the Firemen hav-
i ing refused an
wit the Temperance people), and we
J citizens must chose this hour whither
! will ye go, to the Temperance or Fire
men's Pic Nie, and thus we seperated,
and with pleasing anticipations of wise
and pithy speeches, entrancing strains
of music, and tempting dinner, we
marched westward to the grounds
which were tlie most pleasant in the vi
cinity, bsving a southern slope which
gave full benefit of the cooling breeze
and afforded weleomingshadc in abun
dance. After everybody had tired of
greeting everybody's friends, the seats
wore filled and Declaration of Inde
pendence was read by B. Spurlock,
when Kldor Dungan, of Lincoln, pre
sented by the Marshal, delivered an
Oration of extraordinary merit. Sel-

j and figures readied our ears as the
j speaker grew more emphatic. The
j listening breeze swayed the heavy
