The deliquent tax list of the city of
Chicago covers in the Inter ocean
forty-four pages of matter printed in
small minion type. It would take
twelve papers like the Herald to con
tain that amount of matter.
The present Congress lias devel
oped a genius for blundering that is
truly wonderful. It strengthens our
faith in the. "Republican party to see it
survive the acts of some of its leaders.
It must be fool-proof. Glole.
They need a blacksmith at Factory
ville very badly, and can give him
plenty of work. Hon. E. W. Barnum
informs us that there is no question
about succssful results, if a steady, so
ber and industrious man takes hold
and the neighbors are ready and wil

The Texas Cattle Trade is said to be
about played out. The immense droves
of cattle shipped north have actually
drained the Ranches, and hereafter the
Texas breeders propose to raise fewer
cattle, keep them at home, and cross
them with Durham or good blooded
stock, thus making up in quality what
they must hereafter lose in quantity.
The last currency bill seems to be as
inexplicable as the former one, vetoed
hy the President, so much so that dif
ferent authorities cannot agree wheth
er it will produce expansion or contrac
tion, or whether free banking will turn
out a curse or a blessing. We shall
find out before next Congress and
somebody will have to take a bless
ing ( ?) in either case.
The whole Beecher Scandal has been
re-opened by a letter from Theodore.
Tilton, published in the Golden Age,
in which Tilton substantially reiter
ates and affirms the Woodhull scandal
and is very severe on the Plymouth
Church management of the case.
Beecher has not replied at this writing.
The case is a very peculiar one and the
world awaits the reply of Mr. Beecher,
or his friends with great anxiety. If
Beecher fails to clear himself of this
charge, the christian world receives a
great blow at his hands.

highly spoken of and was very meritorious.
A young lady who prides herself on
her propriety, lately wrote home to her
parents regarding her boarding school
associates, hesaid: "The girls are
awful slangy. One of them told me
the first day I came here that I had
better 'walk off on my ear. The little
chit! I felt like putting a tin roof on
her. And they use such disgusting
phrases as 'you bet,' and 'bully. I
have pitched into them several times
for their slang, but they tell me to
checze it,' and if thev go on in this
way I shall git up and git, you bet."
Dissolution of an Illinois Grange.
We publish elsewhere in this issue a
letter from Bushnell, in this State, giv
ing an acount of the circumstances at
tending the disbandment of Good
Hope Grange, Xo. 198, of the order of
Patrons of Husbandry. The lodge is
represented as one of the largest in
McDonough County. The preamble ac
companying the resolution of dissolu
tion constitutes a very strong indict
ment of the central State organization.
It charges that although the order
was instituted for beneficent purposes,
it has been diverted to base and igno
ble ends. It declares: 1. That the
officers have assumed powers that are
tyrannical, arbitrary, and subversive
of good order in the lodge and in the
community; that the officers compos
ing the Grand State organization are
not the true representatives of the
memlers of the order, and that the
officers of the Xational Grange have
arrogated to themselves unwarranted
autocratic authority, ruling as with a
rod of iron. 2. That large sums of
money have been collected by the
State and Xational Granges, for which
no adequate return is made to the
individual members of subordinate so
cieties. 3. That there is a dispositon
on the part of the chief officers of the
order to divert it from its original pur
pose, and to make of it a political par
ty to be used to advance the personal
and political fortunes of certain lead

The Baccalaureate address by the
Chancellor was spoken of very highly,
as also the address by Hon. C. F. Man
derson, of Omaha. The graduates
were three in number. Messrs. Hurd,
Maleck, and Stevenson. The graduat
ing exercises took place on Wednesday,
commencing at 10 a. m. The gradu
ates were introduced by Chancellor
Benton, and Mr. Hurd delivered an ad
dress on "Ambition," Mr. Malleck on
"Xatural Talent," and Mr. Stevenson
on "Count di Cavour." All of them
. creditable.
Then, after a short address f rom Gov.
Furnas, as President of the Board of
Regents, Chancellor Benton in a few
appropriate remarks conferred on the
Seniors, the degree of Bachelor of
Science and presented them their di
plomas. An Alumni Association was form-
ed by the graduating classes of this
and last year.
At the meeting of the Board of Re
gents, Jthe Crelver farm, situated two
- and a half miles north-east of the Uni-A-ersity
was selected for the "Model
Farm," consisting of 320 acres of im
proved land.

which vras-reported most excellent.

Wotering a Steerln tBe Ear.
A negro Laborer in Baltimore has
recently made a scientific discovery
in the application of hydropathy for
the cure of rampage in cattle. A
few days ago a largo drove of cattle
were being driven through the streets
of that city, when one of their number,
a festively-inclined steer, with well de
veloped horns, concluded to have a lit
tle fun with the city folks. He first
settled grudges he had against some of
the drovers, and then turned his atten
tion to an unoffending dray horse.
While engaged in making it extreme
ly hot for the horse, his attention was
attracted to a crowd of clerks standing
in the door of a dry goods store. Seeing
an excellent opportunity for some
sport, the bovine made a call on them,
and for some time enjoyed himself by
walking up and down in the store,
waiting for some clerk to come down
from the shelves to take a hand at the
game. At last he got tired of the fun
and withdrew to the sidewalk and lay
down to think up some new pleasure.
While in this position he was secured,
but he managed to make it rather live
ly for his captors. At this time the
negro appeared on the scene with his
rampage specific. He ioured water
into the left ear of the animal, and as
the cool liquid trickled into the steer's
brain, quiet was induced, and when
his head had become sufficienly water
logged, he became as gentle as a lamb.
Persons living near the stock yards
will do well to remember this, and
when they go out take with them a
funnel and a pail of water.
BUSINESS NOT AFFECTED.
The recent depression in business
has not affected the passenger traffic of
the St. Louis, Kansas City & Northern
Short Line, as they continue to run six
fast express trains, two more than any
other line between the Missouri and
Mississippi Rivers. This road enjoys
great immunity from accidents, by
reason of immense expenditures, in the
last two years, of over two million dol
lars, besides earnings in wonderful im
provements, in relaying their line with
new steel and iroH rails, on broad, new
ties, in new rolling stock supplied with
all modern appliances for comfort and
safety, and as another safeguard, em
ploy night and day watchmen to in
spect the road before and after the
passage of each train, to see that every
thing is in order. Conspicuous among
new improvements is the substitution
for ordinary cars, of new reclining
chair coaches, elegantly carpeted and
fitted with dressing rooms for ladies,
gentlemen and families, without any
extra charge. The St Louis, Kansas
City & Xorthern and the Kansas City,
St. Joseph & Council Bluffs Railroad,
form the only line running through
Pullman Palace Sleepers between
Omaha and St. Louis. The shortest
line between the West and the East is
over the St. Louis, Kansas City &
Xorthern Short Line, either through
St Louis, the great metropolis of over
450,000 inhabitants, or through Chica
go, via the Chicago & Alton Short
Line, ever the Louisiana Bridge now
open for passage of. through trains.
